Rome R16 WWW: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs Juan Martin Del Potro

Jo played relatively well vs Troicki, but unless he becomes a clay prodigy for one day, Juan should really take this in 2. The match-up is hugely favorable to Delpo on hardcourts, and Jo's clay woes should only exacerbate that.

Juan's knee issue doesn't seem serious. Looks like what happened in the match against Llodra was a just a scare/little niggle. He looked very good today vs Youznhy. The tape in the knee is surely just precautionary, no serious injury there fortunately. He seems to be continuing the good and improving tennis he had shown in Estoril and Madrid.

For Jo, R16 is already a good result on clay. It's in the grass season that he's supposed to be at his best. Clay just doesn't suit his game at all; he hasn't beaten a top quality opponent on clay in... well, a very long time.

Under normal circumstances, Juan should win in 2 to set up a mouthwatering clash with Novak Djokovic in the quarters. Do you agree or do you believe Jo will suddenly play great tennis on clay and take out Juan Martin?

Yep, Delpo looked great today. He never gave Youzhny a chance. On clay he should send Jo home crying quite quickly.

Delpo in 2.

Doubt it will be anything like Tomas vs Juan of last Saturday. Jo is horrible on clay, and this surface is far slower as well.

I'd be surprised with anything other than a routine 2-set win for Del Potro.

Since this is on clay Potro in 2. It would be great for Jo to get a set here.

I know, miss Soderling, the greatest boomboom on clay. Soderling vs Delpo is one matchup I always wanted to see in RG, Soderling vs Berdych was pretty awesome.

Almost happened in RG 2009.

Think Delpo would win though such a match-up (and would have won a potential RG 2009 final), he usually overpowers the other big hitters. Slow surfaces really favor him vs big hitters since the rallies prolong and he'll ultimately overpower them most times.

Tomas beat him on Saturday by finishing points soon. In a slower surface, rallies would have been longer and Del Potro would probably have ended up winning in straights as he usually does when he faces a fellow big hitter.

Guys like Berdych and Soderling really thrive on fast surfaces, since their games are based on hitting lines/corners and finishing points early, it's clear how much better they become when they can hit through the courts as easily as in Madrid. On the other hand, their chances of success are greatly harmed by the scarcity of fast courts on tour at the moment. If I remember correctly, there were only 15 rallies over 10 shots in the Tomas vs Delpo match on Saturday and that's why Tomas won. Few can hang with him (and Soderling too) in surfaces that reward aggressive, first strike tennis.

Delpo should win.
Tsonga is not that great on clay and he's Delpo's pigeon.:p

Ballbasher battle.

Clownga is useless on clay, however, while Delpo is a little less useless, so he should win.

there is a chance this could go 3 sets if d-pot is flat and tsonga serves absolutely huge.

but speaking in terms of central tendency, one has to favor d-pot obviously since he is more consistent off the ground and generally plays a more high percentage game.

tsonga will have to be returning at his best and striking his backhand well to have a chance against del-potsmoker

CD, did you watch any matches in Rome?

Clownga's flat serve is absolutely useless on this surface.

On slow clay, you need a huge kicker to set up points, which Clownga doesn't possess. His serve will not be a factor in this match, trust me.

I'd take heavy spin serve over a flat ball on clay ANYDAY. That's why Clownga will lose. Can't rely on serve + high risk UE game. Simple.

i hear ya general.

high risk game is not going to work here.

a serve is all he has to keep him close so it better be really good tomorrow. i would say he needs both types of serves and he needs to move it around the box.

Tsonga could do it if he doesn't ballbash and adds a bit of variety. Use a bit of slice and try and come forward as often as possible.

Del Potro hates playing variety always has done.

Del Potro in 2 to set up a mouthwatering clash with Djokovic in the quarters.

I love Tsonga, but Tsonga doesn't love clay. Can't see past Juan in this one.

You're probably right.

I just hope Jo goes on a tear in the grass season. There's nothing I'd love more than seeing Jo winning Wimbledon. But he'd need to string 3 great matches in a row, not just one. Would love it if he could pull if off.

His play was awesome on grass last season (bar the Nole match), I expect even better this time around.
