On a serious note, this Djokovic is a mere shadow of the player he was last year. Unforced errors all over the place and abysmal break point conversion. He might end the year as #2, but his days as #1 are all but over.

2011 titles defended?

Dubai - No (SF loss)
Indian Wells - No (SF loss)

Madrid - No (QF loss)

But the background is appropriate ;). I don't see why Nole has been testing different outfits for the Olympics since the beginning of last year. I thought yellow was his trademark colour. We need to see him in sth non-black/white with Serbian stripes... And scratch the Serbian shoes as well...

He's definitely odds-on favorite to end the year #1. Even that shadow of the player he was last year is still the best player in the world, #1 in the race and winner of the only Slam played so far.

Who exactly is taking #1 off Djokovic?

How so? He has been playing the best tennis he has in years so far this year and is still behind Djokovic in the race.

Considering he's almost 31, it's highly unlikely he can keep this level all season, so don't see how Federer could be favorite to finish the year as #1

True he has chance, but that is a small one, but still a chance. He is much better in grass than Novak and hey! 31 is not a death sentance just ask George Foreman ;) If a man's will is strong, he can do anything.

He won a slam and a masters at the beginning of 2008 also (AO & IW). Was he the best player in the world then? Did he end the year #1?

And to answer your question, Roger Federer. ;)

Yes. I'd never count out Federer while he's on tour such is his talent.

But Djokovic must be the odds-on favorite to end this year as #1. It'd take someone else winning two Slams for Djokovic to not end #1 I think. If needed, he has the entire indoor season to gain points (he kind of skipped it last year).

But there's not such a dominant force as Nadal 2008 around this year.

It's good that you trust your fave, but realistically speaking he'll be 31 in the summer. It'd be quite a feat if he could keep this level of play during the entire season. I guess if he wins a Slam things might look up for him.

Why? He's done it for the last eight months... He's won three of the last five masters (plus WTF). Made a semi at the AO (lost to Nadal - but that was the case even in his prime). Had two 15+ winning streaks. Compiled a 2-1 HTH vs Nadal, 1-0 vs Murray. Accumulated by far the most points since the Asian swing. Not to mention; won 45 of his last 48 matches. :)

Exactly. It's precisely because he's been playing so well for 8 months that he's due a letdown at some point.

A player being as consistent in his 30s as in the prime of his career is completely unheard of. Not to mention Slams, where the big points are, are harder on him now, as recovery is harder for a 31yo.

I'd love Federer to roll back the years and play the whole year as if it's 2005 all over again - that'd mean great tennis on display, even if I'm not a fan of Federer himself. If he does, he'll have a great chance at #1. But I really don't expect it, would be a remarkable feat if he did it.

Roger's entire career could be summed up as "remarkable", because he has and continues to achieve feats "completely unheard of". That's why so many people believe he is the greatest tennis player of all time.

However, opinions aside, the fact is, Federer now trails Djokovic by a mere 500 points in the RTL rankings, and he's improved (or equalled) his 2011 results in all but one tournament. Therefore, if the current trend continues*, which is Djokovic losing points steadily (-2400 so far this year) and Federer gaining points steadily (+1300 so far this year), reclaiming #1 is inevitable.

*We have no reason to believe it won't. After all, Roger's just come back from a six week holiday and immediately won a Masters.

Isner is so horrible today, even his serve is way below usual levels.

He couldn't expect to keep saving break points with second serves forever. That's the thing with Isner: on any given day, he can beat the #1 but can also lose to "lesser" players.
