Why Has There Been An Increase In Joint Tournaments?

Please don't go into bashing either the ATP or WTA, this has nothing to do with that.

But honestly the last few years the number of joint tournaments really has risen and still looks like it is rising, so yeah, why now?

So the ATP also makes more money out of it? That's quite interesting.

I don't want to be confronted with female 'tennis'.

Only if it involves Serena.

Money, business interests. Especially for WTA. They want some of the ATP fans to stay to watch WTA matches.

They can get more cash for TV rights as a joint event, it's pretty simple. WTA benefit more than the ATP.

WTA benefits short term anyway.

Not sure about long term. They don't get treated like anything close to equals at the joint masters events. Lots of high profile matches in Madrid didn't even have tv coverage. Can't be good for long term growth.

In order to kill events like WTA Berlin. Who needs good events. Let's all have blue (clown) clay.

definitely about business. Marketing is very important and costly. Do a joint event and you reduce the overall risk. Both the ATP and WTA stars can be used. Broadcasters will always have a match involving a popular name. Sponsors are more easy to attract.

Cost is saved too when certain people and facilities can be used almost over their capacity. Other arrangements can be more efficient too even if it becomes more of a scheduling nightmare.

The big losers are the players. The men dislike the joint events as WTA players tend to hog the practice court as some women players appearently refuse to practice with certain other women etc often leading to a shortage of practice courts.

Because men are weak and need the women to make the tournaments viable and worthwile for the fans

Because the WTA need people to see their games, and the cash.

ATP would still get cash regardless though.

A couple of years ago I used to follow the WTA ocasionally, not so much as the ATP but much more than nowadays.
When Henin, Clijsters, Mauresmo, Venus and Serena. When hingis came back also.

Now I can't even tell you the top 10 women.

WTA sucks and they are paid the same as the men at slams when they only play best of 3 meaning they are paid more because they work less.....

Money is No.1 factor for this join tournaments, than of course globalization of tennis-sport in general. Tennis is actually i think only globally popular sport where women are at least from marketing side good for businnes, i mean in any other sport you don ´t have such strong women side of that sport, actually from top 10 richest women´s athletes i think 8 or more are tennis players. How was mentioned before, 1 big event with both ATP and WTA means not much higher cost than single ATP or single WTA event, but the money is much much bigger, sponsors are easier to attract with every day big star is playing.

WTA is benefiting much more from this what is obvious and logicall- in today´s physically demanding era of tennis it is just normall that ATP matches are much higher quality, but i think it is not bad idea those joint tournaments. ATP probably would be generating a lot of cash as single ATP events, they don´t need WTA to make more cash but still i think it is not bad idea to help to develop women´s tennis, make it globally more popular too and use experience from men´s side maybe.

Because ATP needs help and WTA bails them out.

Why, Ana Ivanovic is worth more than Olderer/Faker/Nadull combined.

No self respecting straight male would miss her match, that's why ATP needs to leech off the hot babes who generate true revenue.

WTA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ATP :rocker2:

The WTA has been losing popularity and revenue. The ATP is propping up the WTA tour in order to keep it viable.

Maybe not too relevant, but since you have been talking of TV-rights: I've always wondered why Eurosport, for example, only shows WTA-matches of this joint tournaments and never ATP, which I think would have much higher ratings?

Simple. The TV rights are lower for the WTA than ATP. Eurosport used to show the ATP events in the mid 90s then the price went up and Eurosport didn't want't pay the increases.

Because they're too poor too afford anything else?

That surprises me, because I think paying a bit more would certainly boost their ratings: I think tere's a much bigger audience for ATP than for WTA?

Not really, they either didn't want to or couldn't afford to pay the rate for the ATP. Well one of my friends was at Madrid, the Serena/Sharapova match not many people, the men's match at the same time had a bigger crowd and they weren't the big guys.

I already know it from Slams and other events attended, but I am not a negotiator of TV rights.

The ATP should be a lot more expensive as Eurosport have been refusing to show any matches for ages now. I remember when I started watching at the beginning of 00's the amount of tournaments from the ATP broadcasted from Europe was substantial. Not anymore.

I think this picture speaks for itself (11am, on 2nd biggest court the WTA match right, on 3rd biggest court ATP match left):

http://img5.myimg.de/crowd83785.png

Edit: I know you can only see the front rows of the WTA match, but I can tell you the court is really empty, I try to make a better screenshot.
... There you go:

It really shows that no one cares for the WTA, neither me does, I hate these joint tournaments when the WTA take away matches on the showcourts. WTA should only play on outer courts and the big stars on center, that's enough.

:stupid:

What you are showing is that there are more people on the Pietrangeli than for the 2nd court because you don't have to pay extra fee for visiting that court, regardless of WTA or ATP matches. The Pietrangeli has been packed for lots of women's matches as well.
