Berdych played an outstanding 1st set, then after that up and down. The double fault to give away the 2nd set. The 3rd set Berdych done 0-40 serves 3 aces in a row, then 2 doubles to give it away and then Fed fails to serve it out at *5-3.

Fed manages to break for the match, got it done on the smurf turf. Great netcord there at 0-15 on Berdych's serve in the last game. Overall Fed just handled the tight situations better.

Federer was too solid when it really mattered while Berdych failed when it really mattered. Either way, Federer Trollerer deserved to be the winner at the end of the week. Berdych actually came back from love-40 on his serve 3:4 with 3 service winners, but then proceeded to gift the break with 2 doubles in a row. Federer got a bad call against his first serve on his first serve where he should have been 15-love but then had to replay the serve due to the incorrect call and proceeded to gift the break back. Then finally, once again at the end of the set, Federer just turned up the notch just slightly while Berdych struggled. Some really smart plays by Federer to make Berdych uncomfortable in those moments.

Some good drama all around, great points here and there and certainly adds a new twist with Federer being #2 now.

My Trollerer comic now is officially perfect for the situation.

Enjoyable match, some really quality tennis at times, though it got a bit cagey at the end with the pressure mounting. Berdych almost came up clutch twice from 0-40 down, but both times folding once it went to ad. Fed.

Congrats to Fed on #2, possibility of being on the opposite side of RG to both Rafa and Nole looking a bit stronger now and I'm sure he'd welcome that. Also another important step for him towards trying to grasp a couple more weeks at #1.

Very good match.

Berdych dominated the match from the baseline and could obviously have taken this - a couple of stupid errors, bad luck and DFs in big moments. Fed served brilliantly - great victory for him and for hanging in there.

The better player on the day lost, unfortunately for Berd, fortunately for Fed.
Fed was really off today, and on top of that, he got screwed twice by Lahyani.
Berd was playing really big from the baseline - scary power and consistency.. but Fed was too experienced.

With the Raonic and Berdych match this week, Fed has showed how clutch he is in the last few months. Definitely would have lost this match in 2010 or 2011.

Gutted.

I love Tomas, but in times like this it's hard to believe he will ever win a big title.

He was the best player all week in a surface that's like tailor-made for him. He reaches the final, serves goes AWOL but he can still outplay Federer from the baseline and kill his second serves. Chance after chance after chance and he still can't take the title.

Oh well, gotta keep believing he'll turn it around mentally at some point.

Congrats to Federer for Masters #20.

MaxPower
05-13-2012, 05:29 PM
Berdych first serve betrayed him. With a better FS % he wouldn't have gifted away 4 breaks. Hope he doesn't let this get to him because his tennis is excellent and I've never seen him in better physical and mental state.

Have to give it up for Federer who clutched it up at the right moments. #2 and ahead of piggy! In the end everyone wins

When all is said and done, Federer will retire with the masters series record to complement his slam record. Unlike Nadal, Federer can win masters series on any surface these days, indoors(Paris last year), outdoors HC(IW this year), clay(Madrid this year), so Federer has more chances to win masters series than Nadal who these days can only win masters series on clay and not all the masters series on clay as seen in the past two seasons.

Your post was implying booing was good for the game as the crowd recognises the farce. But if it was played on ridiculously RN-suitable surface, you won't hear any booes. More power to Tiriac and let's see the blue there next year. I wasn't supportive but the whining from the top 2 makes me want to see it as they have been way out of line.

Unless you have no functioning eyesight everyone knows that there were farcical elements with the tournament and the courts weren't up to scratch. Berdych said so in the speech before congratulating Federer. Oh yes! it was only the top 2 that bitched you need to read more sources.

They were booed during the WTA final that had nowt to do with Nadal.

This match is like so many that Berdych has played against Nadal, Djokovic and Federer.

In the last 12 months Berdych could easily have beaten Nadal in AO, Djokovic in YE and Federer here.

I used to think the biggest Berdych weakness was movement, but more these days feel it is the slight mental edge the top 3 have.

I'm not sure how it was luck. He played well when it really mattered, was quite unstoppable on serve in general and was more mentally solid overall. It wasn't like he was clipping the top of the net and winning break points that way. If anything, he was slightly robbed, especially when serving out the match at 5:3.

Being a Gasquet fan, maybe you are hoping for Richard to get some luck on his side..

Vicious.Nonsense, Fed said those things days ago. And most of all he only speaks the truth in my signature. There were no real injuries in this tourney were there, unlike Monte Carlo but no one whined then. Yes, the blue clay was too slippery this year but it is still possible to play great tennis on it as we have seen in this tourney (Raonic vs Fed, Mugro vs Pics, Berdy vs Delpo, Berdy vs Fed).

However I was gonna cut down my signature a bit anyway because I felt it was too long. Still don't think Federer is wrong in the slightest.

Congrats to Fed. Hilarious end to last 2 sets. Fed showed why he's a 16 time slam champion and Berdych hasn't been able to get even a second Masters.

Berdych was really good today but played some big points really badly and that's what separates the top 4 from the rest. As a Nadal fan it was actually an encouraging match to watch - Fed's serve kept him in it as his ground game really wasn't that hot. That bodes well for any potential encounters in Rome or RG - over the long stretch I still think we'll see Nole & Rafa at the top now because Fed's serve can't bail him out in every match. He could have lost to Raonic and could have lost this match.

Ridiculous that this counts as a clay Masters series - nothing about that match looked like it was on clay - they could easily have been in Toronto or Cincy BUT a win's a win and Roger did what he had to do. Hope the hip issue is minor and he does what's needed to be tip-top for RG - I'm hoping for Nole, Rafa, Fed and Delpo to be in semis there! :D

Impossible. There's no way in hell Del Potro will be drawn in Murray's quarter, none at all. Especially not on a clay Grand Slam tournament.

The ATP must protect their Big 4 nonsense marketing gimmick at all costs, they won't take such foolish risks. Murray will be drawn with Tsonga (who won't even make the quarters) , Del Potro will definitely be drawn with one of the top 3 in the quarters, probably Federer.

I'm not criticizing ATP btw, when a marketing gimmick is so effective and lucrative as this so called big 4 thing you have to do anything to protect it and keep milking the cash cow for all it's worth.

Fed has been so clutch in crunch situations this season, it almost makes me cry:D

Berdych was unplayable in the first set, and after that was up and down but it was a great tennis match. Federer was MASSIVE on serve in crunch situations, Berdych earned his two breaks, as did Roger :yeah: I love how rewarding the surface is to actual attacking tennis players and Berdych and Federer showed those two great clay courters in Nadal and Djokovic a thing or two about sliding today.;)

Federer has shown an amazing amount of resilience since turning 30 years of age. This is the second tournament he has won this year after losing the first set against at least two opponents. Granted, he didn't lose many first sets in his heyday, this is still interesting since it goes against historical trends.

The complete list for Federer winning a tournament while losing the first set in at least two different matches is as follows:

Madrid, IW – 2012
AO – 2010
Roland Garros (3) –2009 [only tournament he has won while losing the first set in three different matches.]

Berdych still saved 3 match points, how do you think Federer would have looked had he lost this match?

Don't know for Fed but I know how I would have looked

Even if he loses #2 and never ever gets it back ever again, he now holds the record for most weeks in the Top 2 combined, 377 weeks! He has 285 at #1 and 92 at #2, while Pete had 286 at #1 and 90 at #2. :)

a fitting farewell to the blue stuff... i did heap shit on the surface pre-tournament... but, after some solid attacking tennis on fast clay and a whole lot of diva-like whining, i would actually like to see it again... provided a welcome contrast although it probably doesn't really fit in with the rest of the clay season...

oh well

Surely Nadal has about 400 weeks just of being #2...

RN took over #2 after RF had the #1 plus RF had #2 even before he had the #1. So NO.

Wow clownerer/chokerer is going to have to raise his game substantially if he's to stand a chance against rafole in Rome and RG (on the real clay). Mentally, that was club level play. Now you've just pissed off rafa in time for the clay season by bumping him to #3. He's been comfortable in the #2 spot--good luck. Hope he embarrasses you as usual, then you can treat us to your post match excuses!

Can't agree more after all nadull lost against the GOAT Verdasco that is a mental giant and djokovic lost to a guy that Roger routined.

So yeah all in all Federer is playing really poorly compared to the #1 and #3.

which ole ? is that the guy with 5 slams which his tards trying to put in the same sentence with The Great Man . You can take these 5 slams from Fed's count and give it to ole and still would have it more than ole . And is this clownerer/chokerer the same guy who cleaned the dust with a guy who took that ole out from Madrid ?

Like Fed did after USO SF 2011?

humblefedbitch is suddenly humble because a mental midget benefitted from del potro's physical decline.
it'll be Wimpy Liar when it loses to djoker 5 times, if it ever reaches 1 grand slam final the next 5 years. there won't be 4 days off in a slam and easy masters series draws. swiss miss laughs and then cries in the next french open.
no one values his "charm" but his fans hope he looks important and humble. LOLOLOLOLOL

It tells us that nadal lost a match agaisnt the biggest choker of tennis history after being up 5.2 and serving for the match twice.

I know it's hard for today's pampered tennis stars to adapt to different surfaces like back in the day. nadull and djokovic have everything handed to them so they whine and complain... :o
