Madrid SF : Berdych def. del Potro 7-6 (5) 7-6 (6)

The more attacking ballbasher won, but considering how slippery the courts are this wasn't a bad match.

Berdych didn't get down on himself when he was down 4-5* in the 1st set and broke Del Po. There weren't many chances but Berdych took his chances.

Good to see these guys using the wrong footing tactics. Del Po pissed off with a couple of linecalls, which were correct.

Lovely stuff, I knew I was going to enjoy it. Berdych little bit more aggressive on the offense, especially with down the liners, Del Potro slightly better defending and especially anticipating. Raw power on cross-courts, it was good to see both flattening their shots, like in their beginnings and still feeling very comfortable hitting those and especially a surface that awards it. Anyway, these two showed the most in this tournament, this would have been a deserving final.

Delpo giving El Janati a little finger and no hand.

Too bad, because the calls he made were correct.

Delpo should have taken the first set, but Berdych was a deserved winner in the end.

Had no idea Del Potro is such a whiner, and he was wrong on both occasions :lol:

Anyway, a high quality match, I always thought Del Potro will find a way to win due to being mentally stronger, but Berdych held his nerves very well. Hoping for a good final tomorrow too.

Glad to see Berdych in a Masters final again, hope he can take it.If he keeps serving and hitting the ball so well, he can do it, he's playing better than he has for a long time this week.

Good match. Happy for Berdych - he deserves another Masters and this surface is perfect for his game. Great winner/UFE stat. He has a shot against Roger - oddly I'm not too sure about how he'd do vs Tipsarevic as he doesn't have the best record against him. Then again, won in Davis Cup recently so should have confidence.

Hopefully he sticks around, definitely a worthy top five player in this mode. Would even say slam contender

Definitely. He'd benefit from more fast courts though.

The Madrid courts completely reversed the usual match-up dynamics between Tomas and Juan. This type of court is perfect for Berdych, but unfortunately there aren't many on tour.

Well done to Berdych, there is a good reason he is ranked higher than Potro; he is a better player.

I expect him to give Federer( if he gets there) a good match tomorrow.

For those who are curious, Berdych is 29-10 (74 %) in tie-breaks in the last two seasons, no other player with similar number of tie-breaks played has reached 70%.

He finished the year 2010 losing 7 in a row.

I think Berdych has reached this point of his career he can be proud of. He won his first four titles on four different surfaces, I suppose in the Open era such a thing had achieved before him only Jacco Eltnigh. Now has reached finals of big tournaments on four different surfaces:

- carpet: Paris '05
- hard: Miami '10
- grass: Wimbledon '10
- clay: Madrid '12

All these achievements plus introducing Czech Republik to the Davis Cup final put him as a strong force in the historical context.

He's matured nicely over the last 3 years and despite the strong quality of the top players in this generation I think he's got plenty of room to improve on that resume that you just mentioned.

Berdych has always been beautiful to watch, i never stop watching him over the years. I did hated his attitude before but i got over that, what amazes me about Berdych is that he is so charming even when he loses, i love this guy, he to me is still underated and overlooked too much and i think that people should realized that hes a legit top 10 player.

Berd shat all over the pony today. Magnificent display of power tennis. I'll be really happy for him when he wins it. It's been forever since his last big win :bounce:

Tomas loves the blue clay. Hasn't dropped a set the whole tournament :eek:

Seems like Berdych is making the WTF for the third year in a row, good to see he has fulfilled his potential more or less, he is an all rounder, and now he's having a great claycourt season, he also did SF in MC.

good result for him, He could make masters 1000 and beat some big guys if he's in form, but sometimes he could still be beaten by mug player like Dimitrov :lol:

After the match:

Berdych:
"I am definitely very happy with the game I played here since the beginning of the week,"

"It doesn’t matter that much if you drop a set or not, it's just how it is. Sometimes you can fight through the whole tournament and then get to the final as well."

"I definitely felt that [del Potro] was going to be the toughest one so far in the tournament, that was for sure. As I started I already had the feeling that he is going to be right and that it was going to be a tough game. I was confident to go for the match; I believed in myself and that I could do it."

Delpotro:
"The match was really long, really close,"

"I lost because Berdych played better, and that's the only reason,"

"I think that we won the same amount of points. But this is tennis and one of the two has to lose and he played the tie-breaks better than me. Those were the key points. The feeling is not the best because I lost. But he earned a lot of merit in the tie-break to win and he won fairly."

Del Potro has a Cilic-like tiebreak record this last year.

it has to turn for him at some stage with a game built for tbs like that... has to...

he could well be the last to acheive it to no...? for the foreseeable future anyways...

So freaking delighted over this :) everyone had written him off against Del Potro. Heck, being in Nadal's quarter, everyone had written him off by the QFs, and now he's in the finals with a strong chance to make it into the Top 5 and add another Masters Crown to his already respectable career, as Voo de Mar has already pointed out.

As much as I admire Nole and Rafa for standing up for the players and making their dissatisfaction with the courts known, I'm equally as proud of Tomas for taking advantage of the court and adapt it to suit his game. And what a game! He's been playing incredible tennis this week. So looking forward to the final tomorrow and I hope he really takes it to Fed and earns another MS1000 title. He'd deserve it so much.

Del Shitro lost? Excellent news for the sport.

Come on buddy, show him some love.

He played against the player who is doing probably the best perfomances out there.
He's also shown great sportsmanship instead of complaining about the blue clay after his loss.

Delpo deserves our respect.

Only saw the first set but loved the match :bowdown:. It's not often you get to see a quality bashfest on a quick court like this one.

Berdy :hearts:. Please take the title :kiss:.

A great feat.

Borg deserves a mention, though:
* Auckland ('74): Outdoor hard
* London ('74): Indoor hard
* Sao Paolo ('74): Carpet
* Rome ('74), Roland Garros ('74), Bĺstad ('74), Boston ('74): Clay
* Adelaide ('74): Grass

Borg won 8 titles on all possible surfaces at 17/18 years old (the first year he won a title). :eek:

Does this seriously need to be commented? Thomas was overall the better player, even though I think Juan would have deserved a set at least.

Congrats Thomas, go for the title :)

Better luck next time Juan ;)
