Madrid QF: Del Potro def. Dolgopolov 6-3 6-4

Solid performance from JMDP. Good serving, not too many bad errors, when he had the opportunity to be aggressive he did so effectively, pushed Dolgo back, made him run a lot. Dolgo is just too inconsistent, the serve percentage at around 30% is pathetic, gave DelPo too many opportunities to attack with the bad serving. Just not enough consistency or real gameplan to defeat top players.

Too easy for JMDP. Always had the feeling he'd be able to give it some extra should he ever get in trouble but that never happened. Looking solid on this surface! :yeah:
I do hope everything's okay with his right shoulder.

Dolgo... 29% 1st serves, uhm wut?
Still a good run in this tournament and a loss against JMDP is nothing to be ashamed about. :)

9-match winning streak for del Potro. He could finally win a Masters 1000 here.

Watched the second set, very solid from JMDP, Dolgo couldn't really get any look on Potro's serve. Barely any errors from Del Potro, only had to focus/be aggresive on one return game and that was it, completely routine.

Best thing is that Delpo isn't playing anything special and he didn't lose a set for 7-8 matches . That how bad are these guys

Dolgo actually didn't play that bad, he is just way too unconsistant against a guy like Del Potro. He did almost everything on the court. He makes me think more and more to a more powerful version of Santoro, the guy has some magics in the hand. Or Srichaphan with a double-hand BH.

Del Potro was the more solid player today. Not sure it will be enough for the title, but probably enough for the final.

The first part is ok, but the second one  It's not easy to hit a heavy ball like the one hit by Juan, really.

Good win for him :)

hmm well Delpo looking good. When he keeps the errors down he's one tough customer. Looked real good in Estoril and keep rolling in Madrid. Fatigue could be an issue in the final, if he gets there.

Had to leave after the first set. How was the second set? More of the same, with Delpo just being solid without forcing much and Dolgo spraying errors?

Another good win for Del Potro. Hope he reaches the final to face Federer or Djokovic. Even if he does lose the final, he can only keep making progress and learn if he faces the best players. I want him to keep improving so he can be at his very best for 2013, think that's a reasonable goal. I don't expect him to win a Slam this year, although I'd love to be surprised.

Would like him to make a run for #4, but that's probably impossible this year, given the seeding system that's extremely protective of top ranked players. The fact that he will keep running into top 3 player one round earlier than Murray most of the time will probably make it completely impossible. Number 5 should be achievable though by the end of the year.

As for Dolgo, 31% first serves, seriously? He has a nice game and is great to watch. But he can never beat top players or be one himself with such poor serving. Not to mention so many cheap errors. Hope he can sort this out soon because he does have potential and a very nice game to watch when on.

Given that Pony will face the might of either Verdasco or Berdych in the semi, I think he's through to the final.

He'll be favorite for sure, but nothing is set in stone in tennis. Verdasco and Berdych are capable of beating him for sure, especially Tomas if he's inspired and serving well.

I do agree that he's favorite to reach the final, though, but it's far from a done deal.

Yup, Berdych played great in MC, was affected by conditions somewhat I guess, looks strong here :)

I also think Berdych can be a tough opponent in his current form. Also who knows what yesterday match did to Nando's confidence, judging by his reaction this meant the world to him.

Delpo could win this. The court clearly suits him and he has a genuine chance against the likes of Federer and Djokovic who rely on movement more then him

dissapointing that Alex didn't push the issue more, but that said Del Potro is in great form. I originally thought that Dolgopolov's variety would put Juan off balance but alas he is just not consistant enough for such a powerful baseliner.

curious how far Del Potro goes, he is playing with tons of confidence and is a farcry from some of his poor form at the start of the year.... what is it about Estoril that gets him into his grooove
