El Cabezon is now Ferrer's turkey. Ferrer is the Road Runner and Almagro is the Coyote.

NO! 3 matchpoints for Almagro!
Can you believe it!

Very good match, best match of this good day of tennis.

First set: A lot of breaks but a good tiebreaker, although Almagro was up 5-3.
In the second set Almagro played great tennis, some wonderful aggressive shots (both on backhand and forehand.)
Third set was all about "holding serve".
Both played fantastic when the other player had breakpoint. Almagro had 6 breakpoints,
Ferrer played great on nearly all of them.
Ferrer had two and Almagro was very good to hold serve as well.

All in all, the momentum after the 2nd set was on Almagro's side, but he was just not able to break!

3rd set tiebreak: Good level of play.
One error from Ferrer to 3-1 for Almagro.
Ferrer with a brillant return winner to 3-4.
Almagro with a brillant backhand dtl to 5-3.
Another great return from Ferrer to 5-5.
Brillant passing shot from Almagro to 76.
Second match point. Now on his own serve.
But Ferrer plays aggressive for 7-7.
At 7-7, Almagro hits a 2nd serve on the line for a service winner to 8-7. Third match point.
Long rallie and a error from Almagro to 8-8.
Then good serve from Ferrer for 9-8. First matchpoint for Ferrer.
Winner for 10-8! Forehand winner.

13 aces from both. Very good.

David you monster. Clutch play. What a return at 3-5* in the breaker for example. Insane.

From what I saw of it, this was a VERY high quality match.

Almagro always does this. So many chances missed. It's a shame, because he does have the game to be a great player, he's solid and very powerful of both wings, and very good serve too. Hopefully he will get it together mentally eventually.

A defeat like today must be pretty crushing.

Almagro had been one of the biggest chokers on tour but improved his mentality in the last few years significantly, I guess it's first such a bitter defeat to him since loss to Nadal from a triple match point up on serve.

A really enjoyable match. I dislike Almagro's personality but like this playing style and seeing his serve and backhand on this surface.

And Ferrer is just a gladiator. It's a shame that he faces Federer tomorrow as with Nadal out of the picture I would love to see him seizing his opportunity to finally win a big clay court title. Hopefully he can take a leaf out of Verdasco's book and get his first victory over a serial nemesis.

I wonder if Almagro will ever beat Ferrer. Even when things have been in his favour and he has been playing well, he hasn't been able to pull it off.

Awesome mentality from Ferrer, but I think Almagro's achievement is underrated in this topic.
He was the better player, played an awesome match and should have won. That he didn't is thanks to himself, but also to the fighting of Ferrer. Nothing to be ashamed of for Almagro, but it would have been such a mental boost if he had won, going into RG. I hope he takes the good things out of this match.

This was the best match of the tournament and I hope David makes the final now.

Ferrer and awesome mentality cannot appear in the same sentence.

Ferrer and awesome mentality cannot appear in the same sentence. It can, when he is facing lower ranked opponents. He is the true youngster-killer and sets a good fighting spirit example for them. But yes, he normally doesn't believe in himself against the top 4.

Also, I find it kinda funny that this match thread only has 3 pages and Nadal vs Verdasco has over 20, considering that this one was a much better match. ;) Gotta love MTF

Strong mentality by definition means you take your chances whatever the opponent vide Isner.
Savings match points against pigeons/turkeys can't be considered as an indicator of player's mental toughness.

Almagro had some great reactions at the end of the match but I knew he'd lose when he did the finger wag.

If Tiriac (or some other promoter) wants to use blue clay at their event, this is the match that should be shown. High quality, especially at the end of the third set and tiebreak.

This makes me very sad.

Now he has to go very well in Rome to get a top 12 seed for Roland Garros (and avoid a top 4 player in the round of 16).

I just looked at Ferrer's MP-down wins. 7 out of 10 those wins came against Spaniards, actually he's beaten all his most serious native rivals from a match point down:

Nadal 6-3 6-7(3) 7-5 - 3 mp
A.Martin 6-2 3-6 7-5 - 4 mp
Almagro 4-6 7-6(1) 6-0 - 6 mp
Verdasco 6-3 1-6 7-5 - 2 mp
Ferrero 1-6 7-5 6-2 - 4 mp
F.Lopez 6-7(4) 7-6(7) 6-3 - 3 mp
Almagro 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(8) - 3 mp
