Novak playing Halle too? - poor Queens only has Murray

According to twitter Nole will join Rafa and Fed at Halle - what a stacked 250 - ha!! Think he should have gone for Queens where he's only have to face Andy. Guess Halle has a lot of money to throw around if it managed to get all 3 guys. Watch Rafa tank in the quarters as usual...

Might finally get Nole/Fed on grass though!

I had no idea tournaments only had 1-4 players. But good for Murray, since Queens only has Murray, not even he can choke a tournament where he is the only competitor.

Very old news - it was known months ago that this year Murray would be top seed at Queens, largely due to the tax issue that is worse this year because of the Olympics.

Joining Rafa and Fed at Halle, you mean, and Andy at Queens by himself.

Well, Nole's the backup in case Fed pull another no show :p.

Obviously I meant from the top 4. :o

Still surprising. Money talks. Both Nadal and Novak like Queens but it's business. Would be hilarious if someone other than the top 3 ended up winning it. Florian Mayer will rise.

Think you got the two mixed up there... But really, what a joke for an ATP250 event. As I've said many times before, Halle ought to be at least a 500 tournament and Queens a M1000.

It's probably not about Halle throwing money around, rather the tax politics of GBR (which scoobs also stated) which is a bit silly to be honest.

I knew that, I was obviously being ironic.

Still don't like the way you worded the thread title, makes it seem like the other players are irrelevant, which is not exactly the idea we want to spread on a tennis forum, is it?

French journalist Carole Bouchard:

Super late on this : Djokovic is also going to Halle this season ? With Federer and Nadal ?! #ArghForQueens #TheyStillHaveAndyThough #Weird

https://twitter.com/#!/carole_bouchard/status/200270330818859010

And obviously I don't think a tournament is just 4 players - I love Queens. Londoner myself so annoyed that Nadal's chosen to go off to Germany. :o

Queens is one of the best tournaments on tour - there need to be more tournaments at clubs. The atmosphere there and at Barcelona for example is so much better than at manufactured tournaments like Madrid and Shanghai. Queens will have Tsonga, Roddick, Del Potro etc. so still a stellar line up but obviously for once attention will be on Halle more than Queens. In the past Queens has had the better line up (Nadal, Roddick, Murray, Hewitt etc.) so more attention was on that I think....

I got Queens wrong - one word. Changed it now. The question marks were there because that journo had only just heard - she wasn't plucking it out of the air. She writes for L'Equipe and is very much up on news. Further interactions did not make it sound like it was a rumour at all.

To me it's an interesting story - I love Queens and I'm surprised that only 1 of the world's top 4 will be there. Sorry if the thread bothered you.

not too shocking but it is dissapointing that all of these players prioritize prize money over tradition and prestige.... Queens only have one of the top guys is pretty disappointing. what history does Halle have, seriously?

I do agree the tax laws are absolutely ridiculous this season as far as Great Britain is concerned, but Halle having a better field than Queens is a bit of a joke considering the tournaments respective histories

It doesn't really matter because Roger or Novak (depending on who makes the French Open final) will skip and Rafa will donate a win to someone.

it's nothing to do with the tax on prize money.

the issue is that players can be taxed on other earnings such as endorsements for each week of the season they spend in the UK.

so in theory if Nadal is paid 20m a year by Nike, spends 5 weeks in the UK (roughly 10% of the year) he has to pay 2m of that to HMRC (the uk tax authority).

Simplistic explanation but that is the crux of the matter, not the flat tax rate. I'm not sure how it is calculated. It might be % of tournaments played in a year, rather than % of weeks.

True - just about sums it up. Who will be this year's Feliciano Lopez or Tsonga - perhaps Raonic? Fits the big serve bill... Time to check out and relax in Mallorca for a few days...

Though Fed can't skip it this year with them naming a street after him and everything. He's only won it 5 times and it's a 250 - by that standard Monte Carlo should name the whole club after Nadal. Basel naming things after Fed I can understand - but Halle? Especially after he snubbed it last year? Odd move.

"Only 1 of the world's top 4" is still fine for a 250 tourney.

And to be honest, yes it bothers me that you start a thread with an information and then are only able to back it up with a twitter site that has a question mark on it. I looked on entry list and official site of Halle and there is nothing to be found about Djokovic there.

Put a question in your thread title and all problems are solved.

Have a look here and you see Milos' name in the entry list:

http://www.gerryweber-open.de/gwo_en/Players/Single

There are no news about Novak in the German media. I know that duong posted a comment from the tournament director of Marseilles a few months ago where he said that Novak would play in Halle but I think we would have heard something official meanwhile if it would be true.

Beside this in all tournament programs they advertise Roger's and Rafa's participation in Halle.

Of course nobody knows if Novak is going to make a late decision and wants to play a preparation tournament for Wimbledon this year but I think it's better to wait for an official statement ;)

Super late on this : Djokovic is also going to Halle this season ? With Federer and Nadal ?! #ArghForQueens #TheyStillHaveAndyThough #Weird

I think it's a mistake from Carole Bouchard : she says she's "super-late" and actually if there were rumours about that some months ago (Halle's director clearly tried to attract him), as Eden posted, the most recent news we have now is that Djokovic is not on Halle's entry-list.

If really it was an "old news", he would definitely be on the entry-list, which was official one week ago. And if Bouchard really had a "scoop" about Djokovic deciding to come with a wild-card, she wouldn't say "super-late" And no other source talked about that

Probably Bouchard saw that he didn't play the Queens and concluded he would play Halle, because it's not common that one of the top-4 decides in advance that he will not play either the Queens or Halle (nearly all top-players bar Ferrer and Almagro usually play).

Then imo this "news" is nothing and you should change the thread title with a question mark : the best option being that Djokovic told some people that if he decided in last minute to play that week, he would come to Halle, which Bouchard would reveal before anybody else. In that case it would be a "scoop" indeed but why was she so humble saying "super-late" (Bouchard is not especially a shy modest person  ) ? But at the moment, Djokovic probably has not decided to play that week.

Andy will have an easy time at Queen if this is true, while they bust their balls trying to beat each other over there at Halle. Only having Andy isn't a bad thing, especially for a British tournament. It would be worse for Halle if they only had Murray rather than Queens having only Murray.

Disaster for Queens when none of the big 3 want to show at the event.

Fortunately they'll be fine this year with decent British interest, but it doesn't bode well if the best players start to congregate at Halle for a more serious tune up.

Don't quite know what's that tax situation you guys keep referring to. Can anyone please kindly explain? Thanks.

Its not the Prize Money that they have issue with. It's actually the endorsement as UK will get 15% of whatever you endorse while playing in GBR. For example if a players gets payed 4M a year for endorsing a certain product in UK, UK will get 15% of it which means 600,000. That's the main issue as most top player's get paid a lot they might lose money rather than earn money playing in the event. Dont know how the calculation is done i think its by weeks as to paying 15% he will be paying 10% for the playing Queen's, Nadal that is.

n8
05-11-2012, 02:18 PM
A reason why Halle might be more appealing to top players (that I don't think has been mentioned) is its smaller draw size. With only a 28-draw (as opposed to Queen's 56), top players start later in the week. Perfect for the top 3 who will probably feature very late in the Roland Garros event.
