Would you like it if Hamburg came back and replaced Madrid 1000?

Hamburg, such a good event, with traditions to the 1890's, a long list of great champions, replaced by a clown show.

Of course.

Yeah, pretty much. It felt more connected, with better preparation for RG.

Hamburg has lost and prestige it had. Just replace it with a grass masters

Yep, Madrid just doesn't cut it. With the amount of money the top players earn now there has to be more to a tournament than just cash.

I really have some great memories when it comes to Hamburg. I think Germany should have never lost this tournament (well, it still exists, but you know what I mean). It was very well organized, great crowd. I like Mardid too, except for this blue clay nonsense. I understand that China is the biggest country in the world and tennis needs to be popularized everywhere but still ... when I see those empty court (no crowd) it makes me really sad. well, unless you have Roger, Djoko or Rafa playing ... the problem is they can't be everywhere.

Hamburg is part of the history of tennis.
It was won by:

Laver, Emerson, Newcombe, Vilas, Noah, Lendl, Edberg, Rios, Kuerten, Federer, Nadal.

Madrid is an important tournament too, but you can't compare...

I agree 100% but the thing is there is so much politics when it comes to the ATP. Madrid was much more fun on HC than on clay (my honest opinion). I really believe that Hamburg was literally robbed for no reason. Than, we have the biggest tournament in the world (Wimbledon) yet we don't have a master on grass (not even an 500 event). It doesn't make any sense to me, but what do I know?

I can name a good few high quality Hamburg matches.

Only Rafole in 09 stands out since Madrid became clay, and even then their Hamburg match the year before was better.

With the facilities they have,Madrid should have a Masters 1000 event. But they don`t deserve it with the way they set the courts up.If they don`t get everything right, especially assuring that the players feel safe on the court it`s no point in organising this event.

Hamburg was a shithole of a tournament. Tradition can fuck off.

Madrid has still a lot of flaws but it is a lot more fun and growing every year in almost every aspect.

Suck it up

The grass masters would be the ideal solution, but you'd have to drag the French Open backwards in the calendar for that to happen. As unlikely as the resurrection of Hamburg clay Masters is, it's probably more likely than getting RG to start in the first half of May.

And I loved that crazy roof contraption Hamburg has! :p Sure it's low-tech compared to modern retractable roofs, but hey, it works and shows what can be done without a lot of expense. Matches can go on, fans have something to watch instead of rain delays that bore us to tears and cause players to have to play two matches in one day and crap like that. Hamburg, ya! :yeah:

Hamburg was a nice tournament, located in a bad schedule. The weather sucked most of the time.
Sometimes players had to play in almost extreme conditions. It did not help the overall atmosphere.

Should never have been replaced... Also, while we're at it, give Queens its rightful place as a Masters event. It's so pathetic having tournaments like Shanghai and Madrid held as M1000s when there are other tournaments with such rich history that are more deserving. If I had my way, I'd downgrade Madrid to an ATP500 and reinstate Hamburg as a Masters, and then I'd extend the grass season while elevating Newport and Halle to 500 events and making Queens a Masters.

Depends, if Hamburg is to be played on blue clay, then yes.
