Madrid R2 WWW: John Isner vs Marin Cilic

This could be one of the most interesting matches of the second round, if not the most interesting.

The only time these two faced was in the third round of the 2011 Australian Open. It was an epic match, with Cilic prevailing 9-7 in the fifth set.

Much has changed since, with Isner a much better player now and Cilic seemingly regressing. But Marin seems to have found some form lately and Isner hasn't played since Houston.

Isner is the favorite given rankings and form this year, but I think Marin can definitely cause a (mini)upset here and take down John. His height will make John's kick serve less efficient than usual, I think. The surface is low bouncing, which doesn't favor Isner either.

What do you think?

Isner in 3

Isner in 3. Seems like these courts would favour Isner.

Isner should get this in 2 I think.

Isner is much better than last time and Cilic is a clown. Isner will win rather easily if he plays well.

Short memory much? Look at what the "clown" did to your favorite in the biggest stage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJfhz_oqIcg

Nice prediction by the way. If Isner wins easily, you can brag about your predictive skills. If he struggles or even loses, you can simply say he didn't play well. You can't lose. Well played

I was expecting a reply like this  Even you newbies are predictable  Believe it or not, Cilic used to be a fairly good player.

It's not a prediction, it's fact. Isner's level is above Cilic's by some way nowadays. So, if Isner plays well enough, he wins. Simple. Understand?

He still is a fairly good player, although not as good as he used to be. You can't be ranked as high as Cilic if you're a clown.

And no, it's not a fact. The fact that Isner has been playing better than Cilic lately doesn't mean that Marin can't play lights out for a match and take him out even if Isner plays great.

Tennis is full of cases where players catch fire and beat players who are theoretically better than them and higher ranked, especially when we're talking about players who are capable of playing superb tennis like Cilic. You'll soon learn that if you stick around.

Don't waste your words on this clown man, it's not worth it. Really.

Since people are looking at Isner as a serious clay threat, he's going to have to deliver quickly. Cilic has been gaining momentum on the clay.

I don't see this one being an easy match. Cilic in 3rd set tiebreak.

To the OP: Cilic wasn't in form when he beat him in 2011 AO ;)
He had a bad ending to 2010 and lost in Chennai R1 prior to that tournament. If anything, he is in a better form now than he was back then.
About this match, a lot will depend on whether the surface will suit Isner or not, and also on Marin's FS %. Isner in 3 would be my pick if I had to guess.

Cilic will take it to a tiebreak in each set and lose. So Isner 7-6, 7-6.

I didn't say he was in form back in AO 2011. My point was that he seems to be gradually regressing ever since he had that great run in late 2009/early 2010.

I do know he's found some form lately and I hope it's beginning of his ascent to the top 10 (at least).

No, but you said much has changed since that match. At least when Cilic is concerned, it's not true.

Fair enough, can't argue with that. And yes, the changes have mostly been with John, who's a much improved player.
