The fight for remaining spots will remain intense through Paris. Fifth-placed Guillermo Coria (who has withdrawn from Paris due to injury) leads Marat Safin by just eight points, with Tim Henman a further 14 points behind. Safin and Henman missed the chance to further press their claims when they suffered respective losses at the St. Petersburg Open and the Davidoff Swiss Indoors today.

However, Safin and Henman next week have the opportunity to qualify for Houston without relying on other results. Safin will secure a berth if he reaches the round of 16 at the BNP Paribas Masters; Henman will qualify if he reaches the quarterfinals.

only one winning is enough for his berth. but he has to win Ivan, who is in great form now or Clement, who plays in homeland... not very easy! he'd better be careful.

Oh dear, I had no idea their h2h was so close.

And yes, Ivan has been performing well the last weeks, but so has Marat . Marat was tired this week, but so must Ivan be. Equal so far.
Indoors, Paris --> advantage Marat
+ there was talk of an injury this week for Ljubicic, ankle I believe
+ motivation: As long as Marat sees the match as a big one (which I'm sure he will), I think he's pretty safe.

:bounce: I'm getting excited!

I checked, Ivan had some sort of "side strain", he wasn't sure till the last moment if he could play against Koubek. He lost 2-6 7-5 5-7, so he's probably ok and should not be hampered tuesday or wednesday. Good for him, but DAVAI Marat!

Yay! Its official! Marat has qualified for the Masters cup! :D Congrats Marat :) :smooch:

From Atptennis.com:

Coria, Henman, Safin Fill Out Masters Cup Field

The playing field is set for the $4.45 million Tennis Masters Cup Houston after it was announced today that Guillermo Coria, Marat Safin and Tim Henman had clinched the final playing berths. They will join Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Carlos Moya and Gaston Gaudio in the prestigious eight-player circuit finale.

The field was finalized Monday following the withdrawals of Andre Agassi and David Nalbandian from the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris – the final ATP tournament before the circuit finale, to be played November 13-21 at the Westside Tennis Club in Houston, Texas.

Sixth-placed Safin has qualified for the circuit finale for the third time in five years. In 2000 he reached the semifinals of Tennis Masters Cup Lisbon and came within one match of clinching the year-end World No. 1 ranking. He also qualified for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai in 2002. The Russian has enjoyed an outstanding comeback season this year after injury restricted him to just 23 matches in 2003, when he finished 66 th in the INDESIT ATP Race. Safin began 2004 by reaching the final of the Australian Open. Later in the season he won the inaugural China Open in Beijing and Masters Series Madrid.

Coria EARNED that spot he shouldnt have to give it up to anyone

I dont think he should try and come back so soon if he's not 100% (but clearly his pride is getting in the way)but he still has every right to be in Houston as the other 7.

sure it is he himself that decide whether go or not. he earned himself that right.
fairly speaking, he had done not bad both on clay and hardcourt before he got injury this year.
but personally, I do not like him, not his tennis style but his character. that is why I hope he to withdraw. I still hold that health is the most important thing for everyone. he need to consider it seroiusly. :)

Marathon man Safin stays on course for third Paris title
Dave James (AFP)
Paris, November 4

Volatile Russian Marat Safin kept the lid on his timebomb temper to ensure his campaign for a third Paris Masters title stayed on course with a battling 6-7 (1/7), 6-3, 7-5 victory over Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic on Wednesday.

The sixth-seed, champion in 2000 and 2002 and who also won the last Masters event in Madrid in October, treated the crowd to his trademark heady cocktail of simmering rage and sublime tennis in the 2hr 25min encounter.

He now faces a third round date against either Tommy Robredo of Spain or Austria's Jurgen Melzer.

Safin struggled in the early stages, failing to impose his colourful game on the dogged Ljubicic who was content to keep the ball in play and wait for the Russian to implode.

He almost got his wish.

Safin, frustrated by his opponent's lack of ambition, picked up a warning for an audible obscenity in the first game of the second set and promptly fell 2-0 behind.
He then had to save a break point in the third game before mounting a stylish comeback reeling off the next four games on his way to levelling the tie after 90 minutes.

Safin, who became the first player to have a point docked for dropping his shorts when he chose the unusual method to celebrate a winning point at the French Open this year, had to have his right foot bandaged at the changeover.

It didn't impede him, however, as he eventually gained the vital break in the 11th game of the deciding set and then took the tie on his first match point when Ljubicic hit wide.

You're lucky the pic of his blister has been removed from tgfr ;)

Here's a quote from an article I found on the match:

"I never enjoy playing against him. He doesn't make many errors, he's very consistent," he said.

"I wasn't very comfortable at the start. I didn't have a lot of confidence and he could have won the match.

"But I changed things around a little. I went back, I fought and made him play more."

I'm off to sleep now

maratski
11-03-2004, 09:08 PM
Don't you just love Marat ;)

"I do not enjoy playing tennis against him," Safin said. "He sees the ball well, is consistent, can play from the back of the court, doesn't make many errors, serves well."

Toward the start of the second set, Safin was warned by umpire Romano Grillotti of Italy.

"He gave me a warning for saying something in Russian, when he cannot even understand what I am saying," Safin said. "But all of a sudden he decided it was a bad word. This has no logic. How can an Italian explain to a Russian what he just said. I tried to explain this to him."

I just came back from Bercy! :wavey:

Match reports:...I'm a little bit tired...I hope I will remember everything! :)

Marat's box:
Peter (I love him!), Walt, two girls (blonde and brunette)...no Dasha

Few seats behind: Gerard, Amit, Misha's trainer, Cedric Pioline, Marcos Baghdatis and some others guys. (They spent a nice time...laughing...and laughing)...I don't think they knew that Marat was playing. ;)

How to describe the match?
Service :)
return of serve :rain:
backhand :worship:
Forehand
volley :bigcry:
OAF attitude  :rocker2:

When Ivan was up a break on the second set...I really thought the match was over...he was angry against himself and against Romano Grillotti...He swore in russian and Grillotti warned him...Marat wasn't happy at all and argued with him few times...I think it helped him because he played well after those discussions.
Oh! I forgot...He bandaged his right foot too... like in Moscow...Doesn't seem bothered by his foot.

After the match he did a small interview...bla bla bla..."Ivan is a great player...I was lucky in this match" :)

Of course they booed him when he threw his racquet ...and after his discussions with Grillotti ... But that's it...As the match was very intensive...people were happy! :)

Thanks alot Bea, sounds great to experience!

the warning for swearing makes me go , I mean if it is in a strange language the umpire must understand it and be really sure it's something uncalled for, he can't assume it's something bad. (actually, the badmouth in me doesn't see the harm in cursing *if NO ONE can understand you*)

Safin grinds out nervy Bercy win
Eurosport.com

Temperamental live-wire Marat Safin eventually came through what was deemed as a pretty rudimental game against Ivan Ljubicic at the Paris masters in Bercy. The invariably moody and disgruntled Russian lost a first set tie-break before overcoming his adversary 6-7 6-3 7-5 in a tight and tense clash.

Marat Safin was clearly put out by the fight put up by the plucky Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, and after both players failed to even obtain break points in the first set, it was the Croat who romped the tie-break 7-1.

The highly-strung Russian was broken straight away in the second, leading him to vent his anger towards the match umpire.

Having being warned for cursing aloud in his native tongue Safin approached the chair, before uttering a classy tirade boasting such gems as "I am starting to lose respect for you" and "What's the problem? Nobody can understand Russian here!" ( )

The hot-headed talent quickly regained his composure, though, winning the set 6-3 with out much further ado, (apart from a racket thrown into the net at top-speed, somewhat scaring the nearby ball-boy).

The third set was a true duel of chess-like tennis, with both players holding serve until Safin found the break-through when at 5-5.

The game was wrapped up by a reinvigorated Safin, once again sure of his clear - yet so often fleeting - abilities.

The game shouldn't have taken the Russian so long, but it was a pleasure for the Parisien crowd, who were treated to some fine tennis and, above all, the entertaining histrionics that is but part and parcel of any game involving the enigmatic Russian.

Safin, who took the Madrid Masters last month, is bidding for his first triple victory in the same tournament this week.

God forbid that Marat becomes a commisioner of tennis (Thank God he doesn't want to). Or else it'll just become a beratting competition: who many swear words can you pronounce in one match.

Btw. The umpires do have swear-word dictionaries.
PS: Marat, Russian has so many swear words that you can pick some of the rare once! No one will know.

actually I think Marat would make a rather good commissioner (even though I think the idea of a commissioner of tennis is slightly retarded) he's direct, truthful, doesnt kiss up the media, is not the least bit afraid to speak his mind, he's someone who's not afraid to get to the core of a problem and call a spade a spade. Plus he's well liked and respected by most of his peers. Too bad he doesnt want this kind of responsibility (who would)I think he would be one of the better people for the job, behind agassi of course ;)

Yes, but I have to pay $$$ to go back to school and get a certificate to put on my resume (3 classes).

I'll probably do that in the spring, but I need to rack up some dough and still need to take a vacation before I even think of a full-time job again.

Could you further explain June? (;) be happy you saw it) I've seen he made no unforced errors, but did the serve go well? Did the volleys all of a sudden work where they didn't work the day before? The return must've been excellent as Melzer kept serving to Marat's backhand according to TBE. Basically: did Melzer just not have any weapons and no smartness or was it really Marat who won the match by being way too good?

anyhoo, I'm totally psyched up for the Hewitt match! Don't expect him to win, but I'm confident there's a (big) chance! Just persevere Marat! :rocker2: :rocker2:

I know that Hewitt isn´t playing whit a lot of confidence, he lost to Novak in Japan a couple of weeks ago, plus the breaking up whit Kim and the double bagle by Feds have done allot damage to Mr. potato....

sth abt yesterday's match:
his 1st serve% was 59%, just so so. but his returning did work well. (so I think if it works today, it will be the best weapon to beat hewitt.) his FH shots were still unstable. his BH shots were aggressive enough. compared with Melzer, his volley was not very well. Melzer upseted him with some perfect volleys. Melzer did too many errors cos he seemed cannot withstand Marat's strong shots. Marat did better than with Ivan. but he has to more concentrate on court even the match is about to finish. yesterday he was a little bit relaxed at the 2nd set. he got 9 breakpoints in the 2set, but only took the final one.

Aurora
11-05-2004, 01:48 PM
thanks June!
Against Hewitt, he can only bother to come to the net if his volleys are spotless, otherwise he'll get passed time and time again.
It'll probably all boil down to 1st serves and not getting too frustrated, but being patient with Hewitt's wall-pretending abilities and strike at the right time in the rally...

Safin hammers Hewitt in Paris
Australian tennis player Lleyton Hewitt has been knocked out of the Paris Masters by Russian sixth seed Marat Safin.

Safin put down the battling challenge of the Australian second seed to reach the semi-finals of the $A4.16 million tournament and stay on course for his third title in Paris.

Safin, the winner in 2000 and 2002 and a runner-up in 1999, now faces a semi-final clash with Argentina's 13th seed Guillermo Canas, who reached his seventh semi-final of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Spain's Feliciano Lopez.

"It's been a long time since I played that well," Safin said.

"I really enjoyed it tonight and I hope to keep playing like this until the end of the season.

"But having to play someone like Lleyton automatically helps you play better. You have to focus and play well in all aspects of the game."

Should Safin reach and win the final, he will become only the second player after Boris Becker to win the Paris title three times.

And Hewitt believes Safin, the highest seed left in the event, is the clear favourite to lift the title.

"I felt I was striking the ball really well and it was a big step up compared to my other matches here, but that was the best I have seen him play in a long time," said the Australian who lost to Safin in the 2002 final.

"I can't see too many players left in the draw who can beat him. He's a clean hitter, he has the big serve, covers the court well and stays low. That's Marat."

Safin's win, in one hour and 40 minutes was achieved in dramatic circumstances.

He squandered a match point in the 10th game of the second set and then had to stave off two break points in the 12th to prompt the crucial tie-break

Safin broke in the fifth game of the first set and then battled back from 0-30 down in the crucial 10th game with two huge, fiercely driven forehands which led to set point which he converted when Hewitt hit a forehand long.

The 24-year-old Russian, who won the Madrid Masters title last month, then broke in the fifth game of the second set in a manner which summed up his determination.

Hewitt had caught the top of the net with a return which bobbled awkwardly over onto Safin's side, but the Russian recovered his poise to sprint to the ball and won the point with a gentle cross-court forehand dab.

However, the nerves crept in when he wasted a match point at 5-4 to let Hewitt back in and the Australian then held for 6-5 and even had two points in the next game to go into a deciding set

But Safin recovered his composure with two crunching backhands and a Hewitt double fault giving him the impetus in the tie break as he went on to book his place in his seventh semi-final of 2004.

Some quotes:

“I didn't really serve well, even though that I was two breakpoints down, then I had a matchpoint. And I was just a little bit rushing too much probably, because knowing that Lleyton, he likes these kind of matches, that he comes back and then he takes control of the match. Knowing that, I tried to stay calm, even though that he was 6-5 and 15-40 my serve. I mean, nothing was going wrong. He just played his best tennis. I was just maybe a little bit rushing, so I had to remain focused. Even though that third set, it didn't really feel like he was killing me. I mean, I was making mistakes. Also third set, I think if I would start well, I would have opportunities to make him a break.

“It's really totally opposite the way I was playing at the French Open and the way I was feeling, the way I'm playing right now. Completely different game. Completely different situation. I hope -- I really hope that I can manage to play this way French Open next year, next few years, because I really think and I really believe that I can do really well. My main goal is just to win one time.”

he did it!...yeah he did it!

Potato was not at his best...but Hippo was just too good for him...really awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Marat's box: Peter, Walt, managers, a young guy with dark hair, the same two girls...I think that the blonde one is Julie (the french girl from 2002).

Match 1: Marat against Lleyton
Match 2: My friends and me against some stupid Lleyton fans. :o
They didn't like Marat "poor jealous girls" and were very naughty and silly. :ras:
At the begining of the second set...They made fun of my wonderful camera and asked me to stop taking pics because it was too noisy :armed:

We argued with them until the end of the match and I missed the Match Point :bigcry:
The funny thing is that at one moment people around were looking at us and not the match....My 15 seconds of fame I suppose

I have to be there tomorrow...but I don't have tickets ..little bit risky, no? :help:

I think Julie was this French chick (a model?) who was rumoured to be his gf in 2002...if she was I don't think it lasted a very long time...and I heard that when he went to Bercy that year she was there and he didn't give her the time of day...anyway...other people probably know more than me. Some girl(s) always seem to surface in Paris...in 2000 he had some other dark haired girl that they kept showing when he was "supposed" to still be with Silvia. I guess he and Dasha aren't together anymore? Or they're having a cool-off period?!
Anyway, whatever, hope he can beat Willy today...it should be a close match...sooo good to see Marat is in winning form again though...have been waiting SO long for this!!! DAVAI MARAT!!!

I didn't see a sign concerning the ankle for the rest of the match so that's good, but damn that was a nasty twist! He stayed on the ground for like a minute and a half and then limped to the chair, scary!

First set he had an incredible level of play, it was pure joy to watch. He threw in a few errors in the second, but still pretty good, never giving up. I was impressed by the volleying even though it wasn't that much, he should do it more.

Safin dismisses Canas to reach final

Paris - 06/11/04

ixth-seeded Marat Safin stayed on course for a third Paris title on Saturday after his straight set victory over Argentine’s Guillermo Canas to book passage into the final of the BNA Paribas Masters.

In the first semi-final of the afternoon, the 24-year-old Russian hammered 34 winners along with seven aces to outclass the thirteenth-seeded Argentine 6/2, 7/6 (5) in one hour and fourty minutes.

Safin reaches his fourth final here in Paris after having captured the title in 2000 and 2002.

“I had to stay focused throughout the entire match because I knew he could come back any time,” Safin said.

“I felt quite comfortable in the first set. In the second, he started making less unforced errors.”

His foe in the final will be against a qualifier, either Belarussian Max Mirnyi or Czech Radek Stepanek, who meet in the second semi- final of the day.

The Moscow native raced out of the box behind bullet serves and lethal ground-strokes. Firmly in command, he suffered a scare in the second game of the match after falling badly on his right ankle.

The incident did not seem to affect his flowing form as the Russian made Canas sprint from side to side, firing a string of ferocious double-fisted backhand winners, his signature shot.

Canas, who was making his third appearance here, was unable to dent Safin’s impressive steely armour.

But never count the tenacious Argentine out. The 26-year-old Buenos Aires native crawled his way back into the contest, breaking the tall Russian in the third game of the second set to go up 4-2.

Safin stormed back to restore parity in the eight game.

In the tie-breaker, a moment of controversy ensued when Canas scolded a linesman who ruled a call against him at 3-4.

At 5-all, Canas lost his cool and threw his racquet to the ground when the chair empire made both players replay a point which the Argentine thought he had won.

Safin couldn’t ask for more as the Russian captured the last two points to finish off the Argentine with a beautiful backhand volley winner.

“A tie-break is like a lottery,” said Safin. “It’s who takes the risk first and I did.”

Safin to meet Stepanek in Paris final
11/6/2004, 2:03 p.m. ET
By JEROME PUGMIRE
The Associated Press

PARIS (AP) — Marat Safin overcame a twisted right ankle to reach the Paris Masters final for the fourth time in six years by beating 13th-seeded Guillermo Canas 6-2, 7-6 (5) on Saturday. Safin, the Paris champion in 2000 and 2002, will meet qualifier Radek Stepanek for the title. Stepanek came back to beat Max Mirnyi 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 to get to his first final of the season.

Only Boris Becker has won this tournament three times.

Safin needed treatment early in the match after aggravating the right ankle injury that has bothered him all week.

"It'll be no problem for tomorrow," said Safin, who lost the 1999 Paris final to Andre Agassi.

The 2000 U.S. Open champion sat in his chair for several minutes before returning to the court with a heavy bandage on the ankle. Safin then managed to cruise through the first set in 32 minutes.

Canas surged in the second set, breaking Safin with a superb lob, then holding serve for a 3-1 lead.

"Canas is really tough player, good on any surface and very solid, knows how to attack and when to defend," Safin said. "Canas can push you. He is a fast guy and has a great passing shot. But he also left me a lot of chances."

One such chance allowed Safin to break back to trail 4-3, and both players held serve into the tiebreaker.

At 5-5, Canas lost his temper after a Safin shot was initially ruled out, before the umpire overruled and called for the point to be replayed.

"It was an important moment and important point," Canas said. "I was angry."

He screamed at Italian umpire Romano Grillotti and swiped his racket along the ground, then promptly lost the replayed point with a long forehand to give Safin match point.

"You need to play a very, very high level to beat Marat," Canas said.

hmm..i think people love being around Marat. He's friendly and gregarious. There's a reason why he's so popular with fans and fellow players. As far as coaches...they were all dying to work with Marat, its Marat who didn't want to be around them ;)

He couldn't find a practice partner cos its the end of the tournament and all the players have gone. Obviously, he couldn't practice with Canas. ;)

I got a headache reading that thread yesterday.

It's a sad thing when WTAW's NT site is more substantive than GM.

By the way, do you guys remember GBFH? I thought he was a disappeared poster, and he was...from MTF. Found out he lurks on the NT site of WTAW. I told him he needed to come back here, since OAF is winning.

SAFIN CLOSES ON PARIS TRIUMPH
Sportinglife.com

Only unseeded Czech Radek Stepanek now stands in the way of Marat Safin as the Russian closes in on what would be a historic feat in Sunday's BNP Paribas Masters final.

The sixth-seeded Safin on Saturday reached his second straight ATP Masters Series final with a 6-2 7-6 (7-5) triumph over No. 13 Guillermo Canas of Argentina.

No player ever has won back-to-back indoor Masters Series events.

Safin, who posted his ninth consecutive Masters Series victory, won the event at Madrid two weeks ago.

He improved to 21-3 since the US Open, while Canas slipped to 13-4 since the year's final Grand Slam.

Safin awaits Stepanek who rallied to defeat Max Mirnyi of Belarus, 3-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-4, in a matchup of qualifiers.

Stepanek is the first qualifier to reach a Master Series final since Mirnyi accomplished the feat at Stuttgart in 2001.

The last qualifier to win a Masters Series event was Albert Portas at Hamburg in 2001.

Safin sets up Stepanek clash
From Dave James in Paris
November 7, 2004

RUSSIAN sixth seed Marat Safin overcame an injury scare to beat Argentina's 13th seed Guillermo Canas 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) today and move just one match away from winning his third Paris Masters title.

The 24-year-old Russian, the champion in 2000 and 2002, wrapped up his semi-final in 1hr 35min.

He will now face the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek, who won the battle of the qualifiers, beating Max Mirnyi of Belarus 3-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 in 2hr 12min to reach his first ever final.

As well as chasing his third victory in Paris - a feat only matched by Boris Becker - Safin will also be hunting his third title of the season after winning in Beijing and at the Madrid Masters.

But the final will be a new challenge for Safin as Stepanek is an old fashioned serve-and-volleyer.

"It will be a completely different style to the players I have faced so far. I'm not used to that, but he is not used to playing in finals," said Safin, who in five visits to the tournament has only lost twice - to Andre Agassi in the 1999 final and to Sweden's Andreas Vinciguerra in the third round in 2001.

"Hopefully I will be lucky. They will be under pressure because they don't get to finals every week. One or two points in each set will make the difference."

Canas, who has fought his way to number 14 in the world after an injury-ravaged 2003 sent his ranking crashing to 274, proved a brave opponent, but Safin said his positive approach in the tie-break paid off.

"I didn't serve very well in the second set and I got angry with myself. But in a tie-break, it's a lottery. It is about who takes the risks not who makes the mistakes. I took the risks and luck was with me."

It will be Safin's fifth final of a year, but his title push almost suffered a premature end in the second game of the opening set when he needed treatment on a right ankle injury caused when he crashed to the ground chasing a Canas return.

But it didn't effect him too much as he raced through the first set in 30 minutes with breaks in the fourth and eighth games only allowing Canas four points on his service.

In a tense second set tie-break, Safin prevailed but not without controversy. At 5-5, a Safin forehand was called long by the line judge but good by umpire Romano Grillotti who ordered the point to be replayed.

Canas fumed, but TV replays showed the ball was in and the umpire had been correct.

The Argentinian then claimed the next point, which gave Safin match point, should also have been called out and his concentration was completely shattered when the Russian hit a decisive backhand volley to win the tie.

"I'm sure the first ball was out. I got pissed off by that," said the Argentinian.

Stepanek, the world number 63, has had a mediocre season with four quarter-finals representing his best performances. He will attempt to become the first qualifier to win a Masters event since Spain's Albert Portas won in Hamburg in 2001.

The 25-year-old will be buoyed by having won his only career meeting against Safin in Moscow three weeks ago.

Stepanek has seized his chance this week, profiting from playing in the half of the draw which had been stripped of Roger Federer, Agassi and Carlos Moya who all withdrew injured.

Safin to meet Stepanek in Paris Masters final

By JEROME PUGMIRE, AP Sports Writer November 6, 2004

PARIS (AP) -- Marat Safin overcame a twisted right ankle to reach the Paris Masters final for the fourth time in six years by beating 13th-seeded Guillermo Canas 6-2, 7-6 (5) on Saturday.

Safin, the Paris champion in 2000 and 2002, will meet qualifier Radek Stepanek for the title. Stepanek came back to beat Max Mirnyi 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 to get to the first ATP Tour final of his career.

Only Boris Becker has won this tournament three times.

Safin needed treatment early in the match after aggravating the right ankle injury that has bothered him all week.

``It'll be no problem for tomorrow,'' said Safin, who lost the 1999 Paris final to Andre Agassi.

``Canas is really tough player, good on any surface and very solid, knows how to attack and when to defend,'' Safin said. ``Canas can push you. He is a fast guy and has a great passing shot. But he also left me a lot of chances.''

One such chance allowed Safin to break back to trail 4-3, and both players held serve into the tiebreaker.

At 5-5, Canas lost his temper after a Safin shot was initially ruled out, before the umpire overruled and called for the point to be replayed.

``It was an important moment and important point,'' Canas said. ``I was angry.''

He screamed at Italian umpire Romano Grillotti and swiped his racket along the ground, then promptly lost the replayed point with a long forehand to give Safin match point.

``You need to play a very, very high level to beat Marat,'' Canas said.

Stepanek will try to become the first qualifier to win a Masters Series title since Albert Portas won in Hamburg in 2001.

``It's my first career final, but hopefully I will take the crown home,'' Stepanek said. ``It will be five sets, and I expect a tough match.''

Mirnyi, who knocked out top-seeded Andy Roddick earlier, broke Stepanek to move ahead 2-0 and take control of the opening set. Both players held serve in the second set into the tiebreaker, when Stepanek raced to a 5-0 lead.

In the decisive set, Stepanek broke in the third game and held to 3-1. Mirnyi later saved one match point, but Stepanek closed out the match with a clean volley.

From Atptennis.com:

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Stepanek: “The final is perfect for me. I'm very happy for that, but I have still one match coming tomorrow. I'm going to prepare for that match as I did the whole week. I'm going to try to take the crown with me home.”

On beating Safin in Moscow: “I remember the most important thing, that I won. And this is going to be a completely different match because we are playing best of five sets, it's the finals of a big event, and I'm expecting very tough match tomorrow.”

Safin: “I had to be really focused against Canas as he’s the same kind of player as Hewitt, running everything down and making you play a lot of shots. I also had to be extra careful after twisting the ankle in the second game, so I am very pleased with the outcome.”

On the final: “I don't have any preference because Stepanek is also serve and volleyer and Mirnyi also. I have no opportunity to play against a baseline player, so I have to live with that. Hopefully, I will be lucky tomorrow because it's really going to make a big difference one, two points in each set who gonna win.”
