I can't help it. Some of the threads amuse me. I like the one now, "what's the worst thing anyone bed repped you?"

Some of those pics are still painful to watch.

Stepanek was adorable yesterday with all his jumping and shouting (I went to bed after the break in the third set so I might have missed the annoying parts) but I do hope the score today won't let him get to that! Udachi Marat!

I got the tape of stepanek's match today. he played not very well at the beginning. so I hold that Marat could take advantage of it if he is the same today. his return was really impressive yesterday. therefor Marat had better be careful of his own 1st serve. I did not see many rallys yesterday. but I think Marat would not be upseted by those.
anyway, whoever the opponent is, if Marat plays his own tennis well, he would be the ultimate winner! Let's go Marat! :yeah:

Safin storms to third Paris Masters crown

5 minutes ago Top Stories - AFP

PARIS (AFP) - Russian sixth seed Marat Safin clinched his third Paris Masters title as he overwhelmed Czech qualifier Radek Stepanek 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in the final of the 2.45-million-euro tournament.

AFP Photo

Only German legend Boris Becker, in 1986, 1989 and 1992, had previously won three Paris titles while Sunday's victory also gave Safin, champion here in 2000 and 2002, his 14th career crown.

Stepanek, ranked a modest 63 in the world, was playing in his first career final after eight years as a professional and was trying to become the first qualifier to win a Masters event since Spain's Albert Portas won in Hamburg in 2001.

But despite a brief rally in the second set, he simply didn't have the firepower or the range of shot to seriously hurt the 24-year-old Russian who is now destined to finish the year at four in the world having started 2004 at 86.

It was also Safin's third title of the year adding Paris to his wins in Beijing in September and his Madrid Masters crown three weeks ago.

Safin raced through the first set in just 35 minutes breaking in the second game and then having two set points in the eighth game which he was unable to convert as the Czech qualifier struggled to stay afloat.

But the Russian wrapped up the opener in the next game with a trademark double backhand drive which left Stepanek utterly bemused.

The Czech's mood would not have been improved when he fell 2-1 down in the second set after a Safin backhand caught the top of the net and looped agonisingly over him as he stood stranded waiting to volley.

The 25-year-old Stepanek then tried to make a match of the final.

At the changeover he reached into his bag and pulled on a Pat Cash-style headband and his luck immediately changed breaking back to 2-2 and then having two more break points in the sixth game which could have given him a 4-2 lead.

Safin, with his ever fragile temperament becoming more strained, clung on despite winning just two points on Stepanek's next four service games.

Had he lost the second set tiebreak, then the Czech would have sensed his chance to clinch a famous win but the Russian came back from 4-2 down in the breaker to take the set when Stepanek hit a backhand volley wide after 1hr 33min on court.

Safin regained his dominance in the third set serving three successive love games to open up a 4-3 lead and then broke to go 5-3 courtesy of a fierce cross-court backhand pass.

He nervously survived two break points in the next game before taking the title after 2hr 18min when Stepanek hit a forehand return long.

Safin seizes Paris crown
From Dave James in Paris
November 8, 2004

RUSSIAN sixth seed Marat Safin clinched his third Paris Masters title today, overwhelming Czech qualifier Radek Stepanek 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in the final of the 2.45 million euro ($4.17m) tournament.

Only German legend Boris Becker, in 1986, 1989 and 1992, had previously won three Paris titles, while victory also gave Safin, the champion in 2000 and 2002, his 14th career crown.

It was his third win of the season to follow victories in Beijing in September and at the Madrid Masters three weeks ago.

"I didn't have a great middle of the year, but finally success is coming again at last," said crowd favourite Safin, who now has a 21-2 win-loss record at the event stretching back to his first appearance in 1999 when he was runner-up to Andre Agassi.

"Coming to Paris, in winter and the summer, is always one the great experiences in my life and the crowds here keep tennis alive."

But despite a brief rally in the second set, he simply didn't have the firepower or the range of shot to seriously hurt the 24-year-old Russian, who is now destined to finish the year at four in the world having started 2004 at 86.

But the Russian, who now has five Masters titles to add to the US Open he clinched in 2000, wrapped up the opener in the next game with a trademark double backhand drive which left Stepanek utterly bemused.

The 25-year-old Stepanek then tried to make a match of the final.

At the changeover he reached into his bag and pulled on a Pat Cash-style headband and his luck immediately changed, breaking back to 2-2 and then having two more break points in the sixth game which could have given him a 4-2 lead.

The statistics of the match summed up the difference between the two players - both men hit 32 winners, but Stepanek sent down 48 unforced errors compared to Safin's 18.

"There were too many unforced errors for me," admitted the Czech.

"But Marat plays very fast from the back of the court making it very hard to get to his groundstrokes.

"I gave everything I had, but it just wasn't enough."

Quotes from Marat :)

"I'm feeling like I played a little bit better than Madrid even. Felt more comfortable here. Played well all the matches. Didn't really -- except the first one that I almost lost to Ljubicic, was a set and a break up. But I was playing solid, pretty good level of tennis. The forehand was there, was serving well, and the volley. So it was pretty much -- game was very good all around the court."

"For some reason for me it's a problem to play in the middle of the season. You know, the tournaments in the States, where I really have to do well, and probably for some reason I put too much pressure on myself. And then at the end of the year, basically I have nothing to lose, and I just let it go and I'm playing great tennis."

"I have to really look at this way when I am in the States, because this year, it was terrible. You know, I didn't do anything. And, of course, my positions, they kind of dropped.

"I was a little bit scared in Madrid that I couldn't really -- I thought I would not be able to get into the Masters. Of course, I won Madrid, so of course the pressure is off. And here was the same. I already was -- before the tournament started, I was already qualified. So it takes off all the pressure."

Majestic Safin crowned Paris king

Paris - 07/11/04

Former world number one Marat Safin sealed his place amongst the pantheon of all-time Paris greats on Sunday after claiming his third BNP Paribas Masters.

The 24-year-old Russian, seeded sixth here, withstood a spirited challenge from Radek Stepanek before finally breaking down the resistance of the Czech qualifier 6/3, 7/6 (5), 6/3 in two hours and nineteen minutes.

The Russian thumped 16 aces to his opponent's 10, cracked 32 winners and made 18 unforced errors to 48 to Stepanek.

"I thought it would be easier in the second set. I paid the price. Had he won the second set, it would have been a complete different story," Safin said.

"I didn't want to go five sets, especially against him. Now, I want to go back home and sleep in my bed, finally."

Marat like "BB"

With his victory, Safin, a two-time winner here in Paris (2000 and 2002), has now matched German Boris Becker as the only other player to claim three trophies here. Becker had captured the titles in 1986, 1989 and 1992. The Russian also becomes the first player to claim back-to-back indoor Masters Series crowns after winning in Madrid two weeks ago.

Stepanek, 25, was the first qualifier to reach an ATP Masters Series final since Belarussian Max Mirnyi at the Stuttgart event in 2001.

Safin raced to a 3-0 lead, breaking his opponent in the second game with a high backhand volley. He squandered two set points at 5-2 with two return errors but made sure to close out the set on his serve.

Closed with a service winner

The 7-ranked Russian carried his winning form into the second set, breaking his opponent in the third game, only to trade his delivery for the first time in the following game.

A revived Stepanek, the world No63, who was playing in his first final ever, gave the crowd plenty to sheer about when he surged 3-2. Errors began creeping into the Russian's game as Safin staved off two break points in the sixth game.

Both men held stubbornly onto their deliveries until the tie-breaker. A high-flying Stepanek burst ahead 2-0, then again 4-2 but each time Safin stormed right back to level the score. At 6-5, Safin hit a solid return Stepanek couldn't handle to build a two sets to love lead.

The feisty Czech hung tough but capitulated in the eight game when he conceded his serve.

Safin served his way out of trouble when he faced two break points and closed out the contest with a service winner.

hi everybody!!!!

I was at marat's match today...haha!!!!!!!!

We had only one ticket for 3 persons...but we decided to go...hehe
With the same ticket my friend Emmanuel saw the first set, I saw the second one and my other friend Marie saw the third one(thanks Marat for only 3 sets and thanks to the men in black)....in french we say systeme D...we are very resourceful togheter...that was not that hard to wait because there were TVs around and some people were like us... without tickets! :)
The men in black were very cool with us...we laughed with them (or they had pity on us)...and finally at the end of the match we managed to see the ceremony!

From what I saw (not very much!) Marat didn't play very well...He seemed very anxious...maybe because of his ankle...But who cares?
I know I'm late...he won!!!!! he won!!!!!! :woohoo: :woohoo:

thanks again to the men in black!...I love you! :worship:

The Tennis Channel broadcast the trophy ceremony. It was cool. They had a translator. Marat spoke English and someone translated to French. I am happy to be turning to this channel and seeing Marat more often. I missed his first match, but saw the others. I thought the match against Hewitt was the best, then against Canas. Scary when he hurt his ankle like that - it wasn't clear at first what had happened. He seemed down on the ground for a long time without moving and they called for a trainer and doctor right away. For whatever reason, they didn't retape it. It was already taped under his sock. I thought the final was anti-climactic. It nearly bored me and that is a feat where Marat is concerned. The only place that his opponent was getting a lot of easy points against him was with some really good net shots, but it wasn't enough. I wonder how Marat will play against Roger Federer. That would be interesting to watch. Two brilliant and creative players. I am so glad Marat is playing well again. I hope he does well in Houston - something to look forward to. I am always afraid to get my hopes up, but Marat seems to be pretty stable right now in his playing so I hope he will do well there too.

I got the delayed broadcast today. it is not a great match. at least not as well as QF with Hewitt and SF with Willy. I think it is cos Darek's style. their rallys looked weird. Darek lacked of strength when hitting the ball. so Marat cannot return it in his normal way. Darek was more like a sneak-attacker. but his returnning was great as usual. btw, Marat's FH shots did not work well too. BH and serve were well enough. some volleys were cute. sum up these, the match was not perfect. but it is also a great victory for Marat. :)

Ok, ceremony transcription as promised.

first a short interview for television:
Almost a home crowd? "Actually, I thought maybe it's easier to play here than at home because at home, you have more pressure. Because it's people who support you in the long career, they thank you. Win or lose, but they support you as much as they can."
final most difficult match? "Of course it's difficult, I didn't really expect he was going to play so well because it's the final and it's the first time in a final of such a big tournament. He gave his best, he had a couple of chances to get back into the match. But luck was on my side"

speech:
"I have to give it back [to Stepanek]: I think congratulations, great end of season. I hope you'll have more succes in next year's finals and of course winning some titles. I wish you the best and good luck for the future." [translation]
"Then I think next is the ... thanks alot to the sponsors, I mean BNPParibas, you've been good for me here ... (public whistles) Wait wait! I want to translate. The most important will be later!" [translation, wrong btw]
"Thanks to the sponsors, tournament director Cédric [Pioline]: you did a great job, it's your first.. no, second year here. All the success, all the best in the future here."
"Of course to the ballkids, you were very fast this week, you were amazing"
"Then I want to say, I don't see any linesmen, but thanks alot to them. Because without them we wouldn't win any points, so thanks alot. Thanks alot for helping me win this tournament."
"And of course, of the most important thing: thanks alot for coming here. Thanks for keeping tennis alive. It's really great to come here again and again, in the summer, in the winter. I really enjoy my tennis and really enjoyed to have you here and play with a full crowd. It's one of the best experiences of my life" [ovation, shy smile] "It's true, I really enjoy playing in France. So I have to say it's the truth."
"And of course, there is a part of the succes that I'm winning lately that is also for my coach, my team there, my managers. We've been waiting for a long time, finally succes is coming"

He said something more, I couldn't understand it 'cause of the commentators and then my video broke down, I think it was practically the end too.
