Federer doubtful for Masters Cup

this is horrible news, but its not 100%

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/3956873.stm

This is a big blow for me," said Federer, winner of three Grand Slam titles this season.

"I hope I can play in Houston but I don't know. I know it will be very tight, very difficult and I don't want to take too much risk."

Federer was due to play in the Swiss Indoors in his hometown Basel but suffered the injury during practice on Monday.

"It's a huge, huge disappointment for me, obviously," said Federer. "I've been to this tournament many, many times both as a player and a ballboy.

"I really thought I had a big chance to win this year."

The 23-year-old has been told by doctors to rest for 10 to 14 days, meaning he is almost certain to miss next week's Paris Masters.

It would be terrible:sad:! But of course he has to listen to his body first, and heal that injury 100% completely for 2005! Maybe it would safer not to play.. Rogi knows!

Yoda

I agree. It's better to rest now if the injury is bad than have a injury riddled 2005. (like 2004 for Coria, Ferrero, Nalbandian)

Raquel

 Terrible news. I hope Roger is fit enough to play but like Billabong says maybe the injury has come at the best possible time so he can prepare for 2005. He has had such a legendary year that missing the Masters would not be so hard to take. Whatever he does will be for the best. Get better soon Rogi

I find it surprising some non fans of Roger actually think this is good for the Houston TMC.

OF course they do, Wyven... they must be so happy...

Poor Rogi, what bad timing... for an injury... he s have skipped Bangkok and played Madrid and Basel, and skipped Paris for Houston prep. Too late now... Rogi must be so disappointed.

I am surprised you are surprised.....

Yeah I like your schedule better RF, but it's a done deal now so let's not regret what we can not change.

I agree with everybody else here, his health should be the utmost priority. So if he's not 100% yet, he should not attempt any comeback even if it means skipping the rest of the year. Rogi said in his website that he thinks he can be back in Paris  Maybe that's before his injury was checked thoroughly.

How is that good for Houston?

Poor Rogi...can't comprehend the thought of only because he had won so much, it's no big deal if he misses Houston??? He had worked his butt out for this great year, if anybody, he deserves to be in Houston more than any other players in the list

Ok...it's stupid to get upset about what others think, I'm just really angry this is happening to Rogi and need to vent my anger...

Maybe it will be a blessing in disguise, he can take this "forced" leave (without having some idiots critisizing him for missing any tournaments), rest well, and come back really motivated next year.

PLEASE DO NOT BE BACK TILL YOU'RE COMPLETELY OK ROGI!!!

maybe the rest will do him good apart from the injury i mean, but mentally this year must have taken an awful lot out of roger winning all those titles which is fantastic but if he does miss houston he will go into 2005 kean fresh and eager.get well soon anyway roger.

Right on, lsy!~You are certainly telling it like it is!! :worship:

When I came home from work and saw some of the comments, I was angry, too. So I cleaned my kitchen...from top to bottom and boy, is it clean! :D
I worked my anger off. (I think).

Roger is injured. He hurts, and that is what is making me really sad.

I can't understand anyone saying it is because he played in Bancock. I can't
see that it was caused by anything he did or did not do.

It is an injury! It happens! Athletes have to deal with this all the time. :(

It's something we hope won't happen, yet we know it is one of the *work hazards* of what they do.

Just get well, Rogi~~that is what is important. Take care of yourself.

Some people are stupid what else can I say. The TMC needs all the best players and if the best player isn't there it taints whoever wins the title.

If he plays that's good, but not to the detriment of getting ready for 2005.

This one really got me out of lurker room. I was truly depressed when I heard Roger pulled out. Waited for watching him play so badly since US open which was the last time I saw him play. But now Im depressed by the fact that Im depressed. :scared: How can I be so depressed by missing some tennis matches. After all, the muscle tear isnt that serious injury considering what the other players are bearing. It isnt really one of those tennis-injuries, back, shoulder, knee, hip...etc which are really scary (Invent something to prevent so many injuries form tennis, you smart guys! ). Muscle tearing is more like sport-injury to be healed(?) 100% by rest. This is the conclusion I got to cheer me up after all. Based on my zero medical knowlage (sp?) and on what I've heard here and there.
And by the time passes, it looks like the tearing is getting smaller...and my hopes are getting higher. By now I think he will ready to play houston if he dares to talk whether(again sp?) playing paris now.
And many get happy by roger's (possible)pull out from houston, but dont forget that there are quite % of Moronlanders in every place...
BTW, hi ppl :wavey: . Enjoyed so much your posts during these days. I will take this chance to post some before I go back to hibernate.

I´m not sure,if Roger himself knows at this time if can play in Paris or Houston.
But you are very right - tennis without Roger isn´t the same.I´m can watch alot of tennis as long as I know Roger is somewhere in the mix to make up for all the hussle and bussle the others produce.
Besides,I get a good workout while Roger plays - runing around the room, unable to sit still.

It's so sad what happened to Roger. I may be supporting others but it doesnt stop me to admit that he's undoubtedly the genius of the modern tennis and I'd have so loved to see him play in the MC as it would have been again a display of amazing talent. Hope he can get well but if he doesn't till then, all the best for 2005. :)

It's sounding better for the TMC. Roger held a press conference this afternoon (where he released details about Davis Cup, his schedule for the first half of 2005 etc).

'Dans ma tête, il n'y a plus de place au doute: je jouerai le Masters.J'ai passé une IRM lundi.La guérison est en bonne voie.Je crois que je serai dans les temps.Je ne prendrai bien sûr aucun risque.Mais je suis très optimiste'

"There are no longer any room for doubts in my head: I will play the Masters. I had an MRI on Monday. Healing is making good progress. I believe I'll make it in time. I won't take any risks of course. But I am very optimistic."

Can't believe it's almost a year already, seemed like only yesterday when I r'ber how Rogi was classy enough to thank Jim whoever after his awful speech and said he hoped to be back, of course with Jim whoever sour face at the background...:haha:

Rogi must be glad to be back though, seeing how it's almost like a turning point to his career there.

Rogi and Jim? In short :

I think the person who was most embarrassed was Agassi, who is a genuinely good sportsman. He must have thought "what a jerk, Roger just beat me thoroughly, and this idiot is praising me", and Agassi went out of his way to praise Roger in his speech saying "Man, you're an inspiration to watch. You inspire me to get better next year" -- Yes, I memorized it because I was so impressed that Agassi tried to cancel-out the effect of that Moron Jim

Its good to here he is playing, and I hope he does really well here. I want to see him defend. I dont care what kind of draw he gets. Remember the crappy draw last year, and not only did he win, but he won in style. Thrashing every player in his way. :) Good luck Rogi :)

Rogi and Jim? In short :

Rogi made some comments on the courts, the petty old man wasn't happy, confronted Rogi apparently shouted at him and then gave a really sour speech complimentating Andre/Steffi with no mention about Rogi at all during the trophy presentation.
That sumarrizes it nicely.

Its good to here he is playing, and I hope he does really well here. I want to see him defend. I dont care what kind of draw he gets. Remember the crappy draw last year, and not only did he win, but he won in style. Thrashing every player in his way. :) Good luck Rogi :)

hope he does the same this year :D

Does anyone know if he is able to train and practice again at 100% or are there any lingering effects from the injury?

I´m with you RonE,
isn´t it kind of nerve racking to have no new information about Roger´s health and state of fitnesse.
The last thing we´ve heard, was that he was leaving NY for Housten, where he would resive further treatment und begin to train.
To me it seams somewhat imposible to start to train and be totally fit within one week, after being out for that long, but I´m the last person to know about those things.
I´m just someone who worries about those things - wish they would post some information on this homepage.

Yes, i also didn't see anything on his website which is why I asked, and is therefore concerning. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
