I know this from basketball and it takes about 3 to 6 weeks, depending on how big the tear is
unlike a strain, it needs proper rest

This must be hurting him so much inside that he is missing Basel, that even more so than the injury.

As long as he is fit for TMC, that's the main thing.

There will be more tests to find out the extent of the injury, but all that is known is that he is not playing Basel and Paris at the moment, there is nothing definite as to whether he is out of Houston.

Here's a bit more from Sky Sports. Hope he gets better ASAP. Too bad any player ever has to be hurt and espeically unlucky for him considering how badly he wants to win this tournament, but I suppose if it has to happen it might as well be at the END of one of the best seasons ever.

=====
World No 1 Roger Federer has been forced to withdraw from the Swiss Indoors tournament after injuring his left thigh during Tuesday's warm-up.
The damage could be as serious as a torn muscle, and places the Wimbledon and US Open champion in doubt for the season-ending Masters Cup in Houston next month.

Federer, a former ball-boy at this tournament, had been seeking his first tournament title here in his home city.

In 2002, Federer lost in the semi-finals to David Nalbandian of Argentina, but last year he fared worse, going out in the second round to Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic.

His place in the draw is taken by lucky loser Bohdan Ulihrach of Germany.

WF4EVER

Get well Roger andplease don't come back until you're properly healed. If you can't play the rest of the year you can't. Please don't do like those others who rush back to the court and then make the situation worse.

Please take your time and heal properly. I will miss you, tho.

Sjengster
10-26-2004, 04:01 PM
Ulihrach of Germany... Sky maintaining their usual high standard. As I say, Basel seems to be a jinx for Federer since he injured his back last year just before he went out on court to play Ljubicic. I do think the pressure of playing at home is not something he's entirely comfortable with (most of those DC victories, for instance, were away until the QFs this year).

Marc Rosset is Tall
10-26-2004, 04:02 PM
The TMC will be much poorer without Roger there, and hopefully he can play there, but if he can't then there is no need to rush back and make it any worse.

As long as he takes real good care of it and lets it heal properly, I don't think it would be the type of thing that would continue to be a problem... we got any doctors or premeds in here to help us out? :)

Marc Rosset is Tall
10-26-2004, 04:09 PM
It shouldn't come back as long as he lets it heal completely, and another way of preventing these things is go for a light run first and then stretch the muscles, and not stretch muscles when they are cold.

It's unfortunate that he has to miss Basel, but otherwise I see no problem in him missing Paris and the TMC, should it come to that. He would be able to return fresh in 2005, and another spot would be freed up for the year-ending tournament.

Roger's a smart guy, I don't think he'll take an unnecessary risk and play TMC if he's not 100% fit. If he had to play for some reason or another that would be one thing, but he really doesn't so I wouldn't worry about him making the wrong decision.

It's easy to be wise after the event Isy. Bangkok is the only tournament he played after the US Open.

He has clearly been superior to anyone in 2004 and I feel sorry for whoever wins TMC if Federer doesn't play, as it will be tainted no matter how well they perform.

If he misses TMC that is bad luck, but he has a long career ahead of him and there are more Slams to win.

If he misses TMC, then he will have more than enough time to reflect on what a great 2004 he has had. He hasn't been ruled out of TMC yet, but that doesn't matter, the thing is for him luckily it's not a very serious injury, that would leave him months out of the game.

His health is more important than any results, so he should take as long as he needs.

A muscle tear will heal, if he gives it enough time. Personally I was more concerned about his back problem that he had at Wimbledon and Basel last year, since that sounds more serious.

It may be very good for his mental and physical well-being to have the enforced timeout until the Australian Open. At least he will be much less likely to be burnt out, and prepare well for 2005.

Hmmm. A report in the Basler has Roger hoping that he will be able to play as early as Paris, and his participation for TMC not endangered, whilst the tournament doctor estimates he should be out for 10-14 days.

OMFG, Horna retired against Ulihrach after he lost the first set 1-6. The match was cursed  . C'mon Horny, come back in Paris

Is it becoz his right foot injury?I saw him played against Ferrero in Madrid last week and he got it,maybe it deteriorate?

Conflicting reports I will wait and see, but he might as well pull out of Paris.

Deboogle!.

thanks Jtipson, that's what I was thinking. People here were already pronouncing him out of Houston but it's well over 2 weeks away (almost 3 actually) and 10-14 days rest would well fit within that. People getting so far ahead of themselves, yikes! lol

that said, if he is not absolutely 100%, there's also no need for him to risk it at all.

Just got home from work to read this news...
Hope Fedex injury will be small and we'll see him back on court next week! Get well Roger!

Well, you know how it is around here.....warm fuzzy moments, interspersed with wicked humor.

Kind of Ironic, the most selective player on the tour gets injured at the worst possible time. Man that's sucks. Hopefully he will be ready for Houston; I have a wager with a friend that Roddick wont win it, and even after Madrid, I am skeptical about banking on Marat.

And on a nonselfish mode, I hope he gets better soon, for his own sake and for the sake of us getting to see his wonderful syle of play some more.
