Shouldn't Russell have a higher seeding? He's #112 right now, but looks like they used last week's rankings when they made this draw

Borvanov about to blow a lead from a winning position again, as in the first set.

jonnyboy21
04-23-2012, 09:42 PM
Very good scrap from Sweeting to avoid an awful loss. He was *1-4 down in 3rd set but fought back and took the decider 7-5.

Mikey has a great draw to at least the SF, with Odesnik not in form, but that's if he can get past Baker in R1, which won't be easy. Ginepri is the one threat in that section afterward. He's played well on clay in the past and this is a home event, so he'll be a factor.

A SF here for Michael may be enough to earn the USTA WC. One of Reynolds and Yani will be eliminated R1, as will one of Smyczek and Kudla. Normally I'd root for Brian but I have to root against him tomorrow.

Filo V.
04-23-2012, 09:47 PM
Ryan will lose to Gaba in R2, I think. Good on him for winning, though. Maybe he's still recovering from being sick, and that's why he struggled this badly to someone this mediocre.

J99
04-23-2012, 09:55 PM
Tough win for Rye, both had decent serve numbs, Ruben was awesome on BP's, Rye though has lost to Ball and Ram this year, so this type of performance isn't shocking, maybe he's fully recovered from last week.

He'll probably beat Gaba, as Gaba has been out of sorts for awhile now.

I thought Hernych would play much better, I thought he maybe had the edge in that one.

Gensse lost a set to a pretty much pure HC player, maybe not the best start, but he made it.

Filo V.
04-23-2012, 10:03 PM
Jan led by a break in the first set, it all went away quickly. Levine hasn't been losing to guys below his level often this season and Hernych isn't a clay player.

Ball deserved that 1st set. Vasek is in a tough spot now. He is serving first in the 2nd, he needs to take advantage and put more pressure on the Ball serve. He's getting practically nothing when Carsten gets his 1st serves in.

Normally I'd root for Brian but I have to root against him tomorrow.

I can't get myself to root against Brian . I hate to see him come through qualifying just to lose in the 1st round. He doesn't get much help from the USTA and at this point Michael already has a better career than him.

Filo V.
04-23-2012, 10:16 PM
Pospisil I think has issues reading Ball's serve. The matches they have played this season, he can't win points on first serve returns. Carsten isn't even serving that great and he's not a major ace server.

Pospisil's serve is not good enough for his height and is not good enough to win tiebreaks against Ball, at least that's been the routine.

I agree, it's hard for me on a lot of different levels, on an overall career standpoint I do think Brian could use the victory more and continue his march up the ranks, but Michael has too much riding on this to lose here. Plus Odesnik would be in position to get the WC if Michael loses, and that's no good

He might not be in great form, but it's good enough to get a WC, Wayne is clearly better on clay than Mike.

Carsten's dropped 3 pts on 1st serve and hasn't faced a break point, I'd say that's pretty good serving...

04-23-2012, 10:44 PM
Huge hold from Pospisil, down 0-30 and saved 2 break points to lead 4-3*. Could be a match changer, if Vasek can start getting a return game going.

Anyway, great win for Vasek, he really turned things around on return from the middle of the second set onward. After his struggles vs Ball this season and struggling lately a win like this is something that could really help spur him on.

No, I disliked him before he got suspended. I was calling him Oshitnik when I first got here. He's extremely bad towards ballboys and girls, he's distant towards fans, he's verbally abusive towards officials, he's got no friends on tour and he's got an extremely dull game.

Yani saves some break points and holds for 6-5*. Huge mental effort required now from Bobby to hold and then win the tie-break. It's big ask, I'm not sure he can do it because he really should have broken Yani then and will be kicking himself now probably. Let's see. Come on Bobby.

04-24-2012, 07:08 PM
Why did he retire that close to the end? He looked as though he was getting back in it. Well, he won't be getting that USTA wildcard now. He probably won't need it anyways considering the slew of players that will more than likely pull out by that time with injuries from the clay season, etc. I think last year there were like 8-10 MD withdrawals. Looks like Odesnik is in the lead for that WC now.

Well, my interest in the tournament has gone down a huge amount, but I still have a couple guys I care for here. I really want Brian to win the tournament now. I wouldn't mind if Robby or Jesse won it, either. And I want Odesnik to lose on Thursday and hope Ryan takes out the horrible Van Der Merwe. How could Gaba lose to that trash on a clay court? Last week was so promising. I guess he still needs time to come back.

Good to see Dima back but his form doesn't look good with this loss in straight sets against Polansky...

jonnyboy21
04-25-2012, 02:45 PM
Yani needs to win this. If he can grind out another win today, he may be able to advance further beyond the QFs. I expect Sweeting to deal with van der Merwe, but Ryan has been inconsistent, so I think Yani would have chances against either of his potential QF opponents.

Jesse's form has really fallen off now, but Gensse is the better clay player so not a surprising result. Awful serve numbers for Jesse, though.

CooCooCachoo

Jesse

I like Gus, but he has been very erratic this year and I think Levine is by far the better player. On clay they should be most evenly matched, but if Levine plays up to his abilities he should dismiss Gensse regardless of the surface.

Really nice interview I found with Yani from Sarasota: http://ht.ly/1j5yQo

The story is good. Yani definitely gets the sympathy vote. He is a class act and great fighter.

But I can't get over how poorly written the article :o

I guess that's the lot of a journeyman tennis player. Written up by a journeyman journalist.

I'm not even going to try to rationalise Delic losing 6-1 6-1 having won the first set with a solid 6-3. Just abysmal. He should be beating people like Polansky if he wants to move up the rankings.

Peter ain't no mug after beating Tursunov.

You want to talk about a poor player, that's Delic for ya.

Tursunov hadn't played a single match since January - I fully expected Polansky to beat him as would any half decent player capable of dispatching a very rusty and out of match practise player.

Very poor start from Tim. I hope he gets going soon, he needs to beat Strode pretty convincingly.

You're clearly biased as a Canadian, which is fine, but the fact is Polansky is an average prospect who hasn't shown anything particularly encouraging in recent times apart from winning Futures events. And it's a fact that any player who has been out with injuries for any lengthy amount of time is going to be much easier to beat than they usually would be normally.

Abysmal serve stats for Tim in the 1st set. Needs to step it up quick. Strode serving surprisingly well too...

Strode 6-2 3-0*. What on earth? Is Tim injured?

No I am not, you are making him sound very poor though, and Dmitri even poorer, Tursunov I don't think was out with an injury, he just took time off.

It's just a matter of perspective. You might equally well say Polansky needs to beat people like Delic to move up the rankings (as I would say, since I am backing Peter).

There's a reason both of them are ranked below 200 (hint: they're getting beaten too often).

But in this situation I'd just be very happy :)

Pospisil breaks Gensse who was serving for the match at 5-4 in the third.

Vasek has been in trouble on serve the ENTIRE match. This would be a real character win for him.

If Sweeting loses to Gensse, then yes. If Sweeting beats Gennse, then Baker/Strode would need to win the event.

That's true, thanks. Forgot about Sweeting. I hope Baker or Strode can get it, because Sweeting would have a decent chance of getting through qualifying, and they wouldn't event get a chance to qualify. Plus I like both of them better.

While I wasn't wishing for Ryan to lose, IMO Ryan's loss sets up the ideal situation.
Having Blake and Brian play each other for this wildcard is just fantastic. Two great guys that bring with them equally interesting story lines.
I think Brian will win, but I won't complain either way.
