Using the term "my other half"

Is anyone else irritated when people refer to their partners as their "other half"? Do we surrender half of our being upon entering a relationship? I certainly don't. Maybe people use it without thinking in those terms but still, it gets on my nerves.

people use 'other half' when talking about me because i have a personality disorder... i haven't heard them talking about me, but i know they do

Isn't that just a figure of speech? I don't think anyone really feels like a half of a person there :p
