btw Vass' words have become profetic. it's a long run, even with the supposed rest days around Moscow.

To play or not to play? To try to continue the momentum or to rest to recuperate?

~EMiLiTA~
10-25-2004, 03:42 PM
hope he can do well in St. Petersburg! It is a tough question whether rest is better for Marat or whether he should try and keep the momentum. Unfortunately he hasn't really had a choice lately because he has to/wants to play in Moscow, then there's a masters, then there's St. Petersburg (ie. another Russian tournament) and then another masters, so he can't really not play any of those and they're all consecutive...especially when there's a good chance of getting to Houston, he's going to want to try and get points wherever he can. Hopefully he won't tire himself out too much. Davai Marat!!!

I do not think he will pull out from paris. it is his fav tournament. further more, it is important for him to guarantee the place of TMC.
IMO, he could be in semi in St Petersburg at most. then go to Paris! enough to take a rest and not bad in St petersburg.

does Marat think in the same way? I wonder... it seems that he wants to maintain his form as long as possible. and again maybe the same as TO, he is somewhat over-serious I am afraid...

is it possible for marat to get to #3 or top 5 in the entry rankings? I think he can if he wins st.petersburg, paris, and houston. But it will be a very tall task to win all that. He's just been playing amazing tennis recently. I think if he keeps this level of play up he could contend to win some majors next year.

If Lleyton doesn't play and Marat wins St. Petersburg and Paris then theoretically I think it's possible. It's highly unlikely though.

Aurora

nr 4 tops I would think. but aren't we running ahead too much thinking like that?

from the front page of atptennis:

Recent Masters Series Madrid winner and No. 1 seed Marat Safin will start action on Wednesday against qualifier Alexander Peya. He currently stands No. 6 in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race in front of Agassi, Henman and Nalbandian. The Russian is only 20 points away from the fourth place and will try to clinch a spot in the Tennis Masters Cup by repeating the title he won in St. Petersburg in 2001 and 2002.

I'm sure Paris is important to him, Bea. He's not going to walk away from a big tournament where he has felt so comfortable in the past and where he can get alot of points and great matchups to test his progress and hopefully further expand the confidence.
He'll come.

I don't think you have to worry about that, Vass :D Marat and doubles..........*shaking head*

Aurora
10-26-2004, 01:22 PM
I agree to a certain extent, Vass. After all, it must be good practice for his net play, strategy and reflexes. But indeed, scheduling wise it seems rather tiring and I shall only forgive him if he reduces the energy level in both his singles and doubles to a minimum by winning (or losing for that fact) easily.
And what's the use in having a different partner every week? Of course, not everyone has the same schedule, but he has hardly played more than once with the same person this year, no? I hope Peter knows what's best.

junekidd
10-26-2004, 01:28 PM
IMO, marat really does not care who is his partner and what the result is. he just wants to improve his net work via those double matches. any improvement would be enough for him.

Bibir
10-26-2004, 02:11 PM

Aurora

 their yearly date to catch up?

And yes, alot of singles players seem to experience doubles as practice and way less energy consuming.
The media in Belgium covered the RG adventure of Malisse and Olli Rochus (they won the doubles, being both mainly singles players) quite intensely and all the time they were just laughing around "this is such a riot". They were hardly serious about it and haven't even continued their teambuilding.

"Everything worked out. I'm satisfied with my game today. If it goes like this, I have good chances to play well in this tournament," Safin said.

Safin is sixth in the ATP Champions Race with 472 points, eight behind Guillermo Coria and 12 behind Carlos Moya. With both skipping the tournament this week, Safin has good chances to move into fourth next week.

Marat is losing to llodra 4-6 1-4.... Argued with umpire twice ( in the two consecutive games which he lost to love) and wanted to break a racket. The stupid racket didn't break though.

Marat's level of play is rock bottom yet again.

Vass

4-6 1-6 !

Won not more than 5 points in the whole of the second set. Llodra held to love all the time except for one game in the second set. His frustration over something in the second set was beyond all limits.

AOF didn't shake hands with the umpire, in the end. Way to go Marat! Blame the umpire! :smash:

Well, that was fast............ What the hell happened to make him angry, anyway? Marat, Marat............. :smash:
He fucked up.
I'm guessing that he was tired even before the match... Then during the match, something didn't work... He got frustrated. With growing frustration, the number of things that don't work increased. Frustration again increased. The vicious cycle was broken by Llodra serving out the match with his 6-7th love service game of the match.

He can never hold his level high, long enough. Never. He's tired, and that's one reason. And there's a reason in his head too.

Aurora
10-29-2004, 02:18 PM
Nice job keeping some of your fans who were about to float into heaven, with their feet on the ground, Marat!
I can understand Llodra is a tricky opponent and that he might lose, but there was no reason to put that kind of show on.

Ah well, back to our old fan-being: one week head in the sky, one week our bottoms get spanked.

Maryann says on Safinator:

Every little thing irritated him and went throught the motions of playing tennis and he was tired. He could have done with a bed to lie on during changeovers. and Llodra's constant net play & good serve needed Marat to be wide awake . Marat got better by his 4th service game in set one, then it was downhill from there on & he was looking for a scrap from the get go....one of those bad mood days which he does have once in a while. He didn't want to be there to-day & just let set 2 go. [R] - Maryann, Oct/29/2004

Elsie:

All I saw was something happened with a baseline call that did not go Marat's way at 4-4 in 1st set, and he had a long animated "discussion" with the chair umpire, and then did not get break, then lost serve and 1st set, and he either gave up or could not settle down to concentrate again. There was more talking to the umpire at the beginning of set 2 as well... he definitely was steamed about whatever that call was. I did not see whole second after first 3 games, so I don't know how he played the rest of that set to have the 1-6 score. [R] - elsie, Oct/29/2004 13:07:24

Surly Safin Slumps Out of St. Petersburg

By Gennady Fyodorov

ST. PETERSBURG (Reuters) - Top seed and crowd favorite Marat Safin (news) was knocked out of the St. Petersburg Open quarterfinals Friday, falling 6-4, 6-1 to Michael Llodra (news).

Coming off an impressive victory at last week's Madrid Masters, Safin stumbled after encountering stiff resistance from the seventh-seeded Frenchman.

Llodra broke the Russian's serve in the 10th game to claim the opening set before securing a break in the fourth game of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

After that, the former world number one appeared to lose interest in the match as he surrendered the next three games to go out in less than an hour.

The defeat ended Safin's seven-match winning streak.

"I've been playing non-stop for several weeks and obviously I'm getting tired both physically and mentally," Safin said. "I tried but it wasn't enough."

In Saturday's semi-finals, Llodra will now meet unseeded Slovak Karol Beck (news), who eliminated another Frenchman Cyril Saulnier (news) 6-3, 7-6.

Safin had problems penetrating Llodra's steady serve and he also had a difficult time with Brazilian umpire Carlos Bernardes.

SAFIN'S WRATH

In the ninth game of the first set with the score level at 4-4, Bernardes incurred Safin's wrath when he overruled a call and ordered a replay instead of awarding the Russian a point.

A visibly frustrated Safin argued in vain as Llodra held his serve before breaking his opponent in the next game.

Then, facing a triple break-point in the fourth game of the second set Safin once again tried to persuade the umpire to change his mind but to no avail.

"Of course, it's very frustrating to see the umpire making a clear mistake but he doesn't want to change his mind no matter what," said Safin.

"It's just too bad for the game that we have people who think they're above the law."

Bernardes brushed aside the incident. "It was a pointless discussion on his (Safin) part," the Brazilian said.

Llodra, however, was sympathetic with his opponent.

"I think the first two mistakes were in my favor but the next two were for Marat. But there are mistakes in every match and you just have to go on," he said. "In any case, I played a good match. Marat was a little tired because he always plays a lot of matches.

"I was very solid on my serve, tried to stay positive and be aggressive on his serve," added Llodra, who also reached the last four as a qualifier on his first and only previous visit to Russia's second city in 2001.

then in the 2nd set, I think he got no motivation and really be tired both mentally and physically...

 at the scoreline. Too easy. I'm sure he wants to save himself for Paris but he could've put up more resistence and not make it so obvious. I hope the fans weren't too hard on him. Anyway, i'm still giddy about his Madrid win so i forgive him. ;)

Rest up and kick butt in Paris! :bounce:

At least Henman lost today and won't overtake him in the rankings :D

Jessi

can Agassi and David overtake Marat in the rankings if they both win their respective tournaments?

Jessi

from what i've read, Marat just has to win one match in Paris to clinch his spot in Houston.

Aurora

He's indeed safe this week from Agassi and Nalbandian, even if they win their tournament. Agassi would still be around 40 points behind him if I'm not mistaken.

If Henman wins his 1st match in Paris and Marat loss his then:

Heman 473
Marat 472 :

I do not like this situation...

Coria is close but still has to wait so he won't play ar Bercy. He's out if :

1. Safin wins his first match at Paris
2. Henman reaches QF at Paris
3. Agassi reaches final both Stockholm and Paris or Nalbandian reaches final or win Basel and wins Paris.

it seems that Coria's out is not a daydream!

Angry Safin Upset by Call, Llodra

Fri Oct 29, 7:10 PM ET

By IRINA TITOVA, Associated Press Writer

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Marat Safin lost his temper and his quarterfinal at the St. Petersburg Open on Friday, getting surprised by seventh-seeded Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-1 after protesting a line call.

The top-seeded Safin wasted two break points at 4-4 in first set. At deuce, chair umpire Carlos Bernardos was unable to rule on a shot by Llodra and ordered the point to be replayed.

Safin started arguing, insisting that the ball was out and that it had left a mark on the court. The point was replayed, and Llodra wound up holding serve to lead 5-4.

In the second set, Safin continued to argue with Bernardos, and his level of play dropped. Llodra broke him at love in the fourth game and then held for 4-1.

Safin refused to shake hands with Bernardos after the match.

"Llodra came up with a good match and some great shots. I also know I was irritated with a few calls and probably lost my temper," Safin said. "I am really disappointed and upset because I lost today. I came here to win the tournament."

A win could have clinched a spot for Safin at the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Houston next month. He is in competition with Andre Agassi, Guillermo Coria, Tim Henman and David Nalbandian for the last three berths in that tournament.

Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Carlos Moya and Gaston Gaudio have the other berths.

thanks, andrea.
marat also has a long way to go when it comes his temper... it is useless saying he was upseted after the match. he had better know how to control his temper on the court! that is the point! :(

Agassi and Nalbandian won today. Marat will need beat Ivan in Paris

I have to say those 3 conditions are tough to meet... Marat maybe wins his match, but look at others: Tim has to take his magnesium pills to Paris. what can we see abt him... david and andre both have tough draw in Paris. they are tired this week, even from last week, so one more week would be very hard... then, it is still a daydream... :p

Heman 473

no, if Marat loses to Ljunatic and Henman wins his first match they will both have 473 points- Marat will get first round points even if he loses owing to his first round bye. Henman will then need to make it to the quarters to qualify. Marat will still have the 7th spot, from here Agassi can only overtake Marat's 473 is if he wins Stockholm and reaches the semis at least and David if he wins Basel and TMS Paris.... if this is the case, I think, this is how it stands.

It's virtually impossible for Marat not to qualify, even if he does lose to Ljunatic. The way I see it this is already settled, even if Tim loses it would take a super-fucking-human effort by Andre and David to contest for the last spot .

Ilhame, don't you have F2? 1 match in relay every night. *fingers crossed*

And yep, it's a real big thing he's (probably) going to the TMC. He was, what? in the eighties in the beginning of the year. People expected him to, but stuff like that is far from guaranteed and I don't think he gets enough credit for that. So :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: for Marat!
