Agree on Gulbis and the same can be said of Stebe, and Garcia-Lopez.

On paper, the list is good, but most of these players are in bad form, so it will be interesting to see who can take the title.

great and needed win for filip :yeah: i was afraid he was going to retire with that bagel and instant break down. hopefully just a mental collapse and not physical

Completely mental. Fischer didn't help either, he's tricky player, reminded me a lot of Murray. Combination of pushing, tricks and wrong-footing opponent. Filip is much more complete tennis player, though.
Filip also easily won in final round and into main draw.

Cecchinato is not awful from what I've seen of him, but Golubev losing a 1-6 set and being pushed to the brink is not good news for him. Hopefully he beats Machado anyway. All gonna come down to him being consistent and tactful enough to boss points without complete self-destruction.

It's not like he plays in weak Challengers either.

It's all about mentality. Nowadays there plenty of skillful players, but what makes difference between being a top 40 and top 150 players is psyche.

Great match between Teixeira and Authom:

Teixeira was leading 6-4 2-0
Authom wins 8 games in a row, makes 4-6 6-2 2-0 (*40-0)
Teixeira breaks from 0-40 down, then holds his serve
At 6-4 2-6 3-3 Teixeira breaks again, and finally wins 6-4 2-6 6-4.

Serra def. Schoorel 6-1 7-6(2)

Machado started to play ATP events only in 2012. He has been kind of injured last weaks, and for the results of this year we can see that his level on ATP isn t that weak... Lost all games but he wasn t destroyed... 5-7 6-3 against Monfils; 3-6 6-7 against Bellucci; 3-6 5-7 against Simon (Monfils and Bellucci on Hard Courts). And as I remember he had chances to win sets with those players... Let s see what he can do here and specially in Estoril.

dunno, kuznetsov is so shaky, can lose to anyone. if he lost to grigelis with the same score it wouldn't surprise me at all. kuznetsov lost to a futures player in quallies last week (also was a heavy favourite just like his buddy donskoy)

also, grigelis trains in italy in one of these clubs, i forgot which one, but if grigelis gets a clay run in italy one day we will know it's there

hilarious match between naso and lajovic now... lajovic wins 1st set 6-4, loses 2nd 1-6, goes 4-0 in 3rd, then goes 4-5* and wins in TB after saving mps

I watch challenger matches like this and it always confuses me even though mentally I get it, why players struggle at this level.

Ilhan's game is too good for the results he has. It's just hard to fathom why someone like him cannot win a match.

Filo V.
04-18-2012, 10:30 AM
Ilhan's technique seems even funkier than I remember it.

Filo V.

Ilhan's intensity and game just dropped off all of a sudden. He was playing great, and now it's all fallen away.

at his 482312th chance, finally marsel finishes it.

first set, 6-4.

Filo V.
04-18-2012, 10:56 AM
Marsel tried to give the set away, but he played well on the deuce points. His forehand is the best shot on court between the two players.

Luinir
04-18-2012, 10:59 AM
marsel's shots are alright, definitely at top 100 level but he lacks mentally and reflexes. look how many slices he hit with his backhand against not too hard balls. if he can get better in defense and get better mentally, he'd be top 100 very easily. because his shots have very good depth.

Filo V.
04-18-2012, 11:02 AM
Ilhan has a good forehand, first serve and variety. He's a more consistent backhand and more consistency away from stepping himself up. He makes too many errors.

I'm not that impressed with Sousa. His baseline game seems solid, but I don't see anything there that suggests he's someone for the future like some Portuguese here believe.

Filo V.

I was going to say the same thing about his BH and defense in general. I don't think he defends well enough for someone who doesn't have elite power. He needs to move better, and have better footwork. He gets too lazy with his footwork and he's not got the speed he should have.

Filo V.
04-18-2012, 11:06 AM
I will say when he gets behind the ball, Ilhan is quite a shotmaker.

Luinir

marsel set and break up now, 6-4 *2-1.

same here about sousa. i watched him few times before but now seeing on tv i can read his game better. like you said, he is solid but not that special. he doesn't have variety and enough depth/power on his shots. he's good but not top 100 material in my opinion.

Filo V.

Don't know what happened in the first set, but Jan was the much better player the final two sets. Deserved win for him. He's great to watch on clay when he is on.

Filo V.
04-18-2012, 02:19 PM
The first set he was getting bossed around, made a few bad errors, but GGL was dictating play. Jan served a hell of a lot better the final two sets and started dictating play with his backhand and moving his forehand off the court more. When he plays offensively, not many in challengers can handle his shotmaking.

Since the rain started Golubev is playing like a clown. He had 6:3 5:2 2 breaks up and 5:4 30:15 and now he is a break down in the third. Typical Golubev. Destroys himself

Yeah, this basically all started when when it started raining, which was at 5-4 in the third. The 5-2 game was really just horrible errors. But now, Machado is playing better as well. Golubev doesn't even want to be on court.

The Bautista-Sijsling match was very up and down. Both guys had a lot of chances. Sijsling went from up a break at *4-2 to down a break and out of the match in the second set in the span of about 15 minutes. Sijsling made a lot of volley errors and doesn't really have a great weapon on clay. Bautista ended up being too solid.

His volleying skill aren't great to begin with. He wants to be an agressive fast court player, but his volleys aren't good enough. Judging from what I saw at Rotterdam and Davis Cup in Amsterdam, Sijsling should be the clay courter and Schoorel the fast court specialist. In their doubles matches in Rotterdam Sijsling was absolutely abysmal at the net, Schoorel was decent enough to win 2 games in their QF (vs Granollers/Lopez).

I read the same things when Sijsling played in Davis Cup doubles with Rojer. His backhand volley especially, it just seems lazy. His net game seeded very lackadaisical. The technique didn't seem that bad, though. But you need to have high intensity and focus to have good net play.
