Well Done Marat :) :D

Only Federer could cope with him when he's in that sort of form IMO Leif Shiras said only he and Roddick ( :o :tape: ) could challenge Federer currently

When Marat wants to play he's almost unbeatable :worship: pity it only happens in about 5 tournaments a year

David though needs to take a look at himself - another big match he fails to arrive in. People go on about how Marat's mental game never allowed him to show off his talent but I think it's the same for David in different terms

His serve and overall fitness just are too big a weakness ATM

A Former World Nº1 wins for third consecutive year in Madrid after Agassi in 2002 and Ferrero last year, also for third consecutive year more than 100.000 people have visited the torunament, the most visited TMS in Europe and the third tournament with more assistance only after RG and Wimbledon!!!

Congrats Marat!

Marat was really playing a very high level of tennis all week esp. against Agassi!!!

Nobody can out do this guy in charisma, he is amazing!!!!! Nalbandian was even looking at him in awe!

And we all thought he was the MOST one that would not be able to concentrate with the girls around! lol, he proved us wrong!

Great Job Marat!! And great achievment for Peter Lungdren!

“Felicidades David por la final, lo siento, no ha sido tu día. Suerte en los próximos dos torneos para que puedas llegar al Masters”. Además, le agradeció a “al público y a las recogepelotas, que hicieron muy bien el trabajo, y a los jueces de línea: sin ellos no hubiera ganado ningún punto”.
"Congratulations to David, for reaching the final. I'm sorry, it wasn't your day. Good luck in the next tournaments so you can reach the Masters :) . Nalbandian has to be worried that he's starting to become a punch-bag in major finals - I mean, what is Infantino telling him before all these title matches? To go out there and try to start well for a change, ie not take six games to hold serve? It's true that a lot of his unforced errors today were really forced out of him by having to go for the lines as Safin was playing so well, but he also let himself down with needless mistakes on big points and a complete inability to get cheap service points. It's hardly a world-beater anyway, the least he could do was get more than 50% first serves in and at least set up some short balls to put away for winners - as it was, he had to work for every point from the back of the court while Safin cruised on serve. He seems to suffer from doing well on every surface but then running into one player who's better than him on that surface: Hewitt on grass, Roddick on outdoor hard, Moya on clay, Safin on indoor hard.

There's nothing more you can say about Safin, though, the Lundgren magic is obviously working again. Indoors is definitely one of if not the best surface for his game, he's evidently comfortable with Nalbandian's style of play and very rarely did his focus waver today. It's interesting that the commentators all suggested this was the kind of performance that will make him the biggest challenge to Federer's dominance (and his one win over Federer is on indoor carpet); obviously Federer has a better offence than Nalbandian but having his former coach in Safin's corner is certainly an advantage for the Russian. I'd forgotten about his upbringing in Spain until I heard that very eloquent speech in Spanish afterwards - it rolled off the tongue, he made Nalbandian smile and the crowd laugh, which is quite a turn-around given that they weren't the biggest fan of his behaviour during the week.

What was it alfonso predicted about the winner this week, bearing in mind the presence of the models? Oh yes, that they'd have to be either gay or married. Hmm...

I think that it is without a doubt that Marat is neither. I guess Safin just plays better when he's trying to show off to a woman.

4th. Someone will have posted that already by the time I do, but he's now tied with Federer and Ferrero for four TMS wins (and both he and Ferrero have won this title, of course). Nalbandian has meanwhile almost completed the Masters Series sweep of losing finals in different parts of the calendar - one more at either IW or Miami and he's there. Hopefully he can then start winning them instead.

listen punk, i am a serious Argie/David fan so don't even mess with me. his toe has nothing to with why Marat spanked him. strategically he was just OFF. and it was clear that Peter Lundgren had prepared Marat for every single one of David's tricks -- and David didn't have a Plan B to fall back on.

Sjengst, don't tell me how eloquent Marat's Spanish was in the speech as we will get a truncated coverage overnight, which will NOT incl. the ceremony... last yr it was live and we still didn't get the ceremony... when Juanqui d Guille in MC last yr it was also live w part of ceremony... if only Guille hadn't gone on and on and on... cutting off Juanqui's victory speech... and we NEVER got either of Rogi's 2 Hamburg ceremonies... Safin played very well and only had a minor hitch in the 2nd set, but David wasn't good enough to take advantage of it and managed to lose 5 of the last 6 games to lose the 2nd set. Seriously David needs to have a good look at himself mentally, and he does get very tight in finals.

For one having a broken toe doesn't help at all, but David making 40 UEs and only 12 winners and having a 1st serve percentage under 50% with his serve is just crap and the score emphasised that very clearly.

It could be time for some yoga or meditation exercises to relax David's mind, but Marat indoors is a tough beast, and I look forward to seeing him in Paris and Houston.

Sounds like an awful performance for David, considering he was actually playing pretty well prior to this. Can't wait to watch it later on to see how bad was he playing and how good was Safin.

And of course now PL is the hero, I recall not long ago when many were suggesting that PL has done nothing for Safin and he should fire him. Expect tunes to change dramatically now ;) Good to see that these 2 are working so well together and that should stop nonsense about PL's reputation as a coach (i.e. for the moment till Safin loses his next match of course ;) )

I know many prefer a Safin/Rogi rivalry than Andy/Rogi, but isn't Safin record vs Rogi just as bad? Though with PL in his camp now, things might just change very quickly.

For me, I still prefer a David/Rogi rivalry, I r'ber luck did play a part for his win vs David in AO early this year and I feel like among most on tour now, David probably will be the one who's least intimidated by Rogi.

Well you know what some people are like. I know what a good guy and coach Lundgren is, and I remember my joy when Marat hired him. As long as Marat is prepared to listen to him tactically then it can be very successful, and yes the next bad loss he has, then some of the fans will want his head on a platter, there is no pleasing some people.

True. There's always easy conclusions to draw ;)

Considering that Rogi has kept mentioning PL being a good coach for him, and for Safin to make comments such as he needs to calm down, throwing temper is waste of energy, also how PL has really helped him so far, I think there's little doubt that PL is a great coach.

I just thought it has been unfair to PL that many were ready to dismiss him seeing that Rogi had done better without him, not remembering that it's also the foundation his previous coaches had layed out for him with current success.

I still don't understand why David had once again failed in the final, and almost look like a pretty disastrous performance.

Safin was very relaxed and calm throughout the tournament, and it showed very clearly in the recent results, it's going to take time, but too many people expect instant success.

Ok, when these clowns were trying to dismiss Lundgren as a coach, here it is in plain English. He took Rios into the top 10 from a long way out, he took over Federer when he was in the 50s to # 2 and finished off the initial work from Peter Carter. He knows how to handle very talented players.

I still don't understand why David had once again failed in the final, and almost look like a pretty disastrous performance.

You didn't read my previous posts then. :) Ok, he didn't serve well enough, made too many unforced errors, couldn't change his plan of attack, when he couldn't get the ball into play. He had a problem with his toe, but nevertheless he wasn't good enough and Marat played very well and when he plays very well, not many are going to beat him.

The mind exercises are something he needs to consider.

Sweetie you seem to know that while you hardly post here. :) Some duckfans have a little problem with reading or understanding that the world is not just the way THEY see it. The poor souls are blinded by duckvision.

To get back to the topic, I wonder why some people think Marat will fall back to his old self again. I know that with Marat anything can happen, but for the first time in years, he is not only healthy, but also confident. As long as he stays healthy, then I don't see him losing form. I'm not saying that from now on he will be invincible or rise to the lever that Roger is at right now, but I do believe he will start giving EVERY opponent a tough time and not giving up anymore.

Some people also wonder why Peter gets praise one day and can get trashed the next day. I don't know how many of you actually follow Marat's career intensively, but I can tell you I do (like that's a surprise ;)). When all season long you hear how the guy wants to be ready for the USO, cause he knows he can do well there and loses in the first round, you wonder why. When on court you see Marat do everything wrong, you can't help but look at his coach to blame as well. I know it's the player on court to be blamed for a loss, but if the goal of both the player and the coach is to peak at the USO, then I understand why Peter's presence with Marat was/is questioned. I know I certainly wondered that after the USO.

No, he won't want to miss Basel, but he has injured his foot quite badly so may be forced to withdraw and, if this is the case, he will withdraw from Paris as well  I am just back from Madrid - it is true that David didn't play so well in the final, even though his performances in all his previous matches were great (and in Vienna also). He was obviously hampered by the foot injury, and his nerves got bad under pressure and the serve went again just when he was beginning to get it all back together. But take nothing away from Marat - he deserved to win the Madrid tournament - good luck to him and his fans.

Not sure, probably coming from 2 sets to 0 and a break down in the FO to beat Mcenroe in 1984.
It all comes down to confidence and that probably gave it to Lendl.

And it's even nicer to see them be rewarded for their player - coach relationship with some stellar results from Safin down the stretch this season! :D

TC, I would love a Safin/Federer rivalry. :D But I think a Safin/Nalbandian rivalry is more likely. :) ;) Marat, Andy Roddick or any other player will really have to raise the level of their tennis to become a serious long term rival for Federer in the future.

Men's Match of the Day
Madrid - Final
Marat Safin (3) def. David Nalbandian (4) 6-2 6-4 6-3

For the most part, it was the old Marat Safin, pounding away on just about every shot. And it was not the old David Nalbandian. He got to lots of balls, but he just made too many errors. Safin broke six times; Nalbandian managed a brief 3-1 lead in the second set but couldn't hold it.

That's big for Safin in a number of ways. For starters, he finally wins another Masters title -- his first since Paris 2002, before all his injury problems. It goes far to back up his title at Beijing and redeem his horrid summer. And it implies that Safin might once again be in position to be the ATP's dominant indoor player. (Of his four Masters titles, three have come indoors: Two on carpet at Paris and now this.)

Dominant or not, he'll be going to Houston after missing the Masters Cup in 2003; this win qualifies him for his third year-end Championships. By winning, he moves ahead of Tim Henman into the #6 spot in the Race. That takes him off the bubble; Tim Henman is in some danger, especially if Guillermo Coria can play (and we've heard that he's practicing, though he's hitting a "Dementieva-like" serve), but Safin is secure. Now he just has to decide how much energy to expend in the coming weeks: He's planning to play St. Petersburg, and of course Paris is his favorite Masters. Does he really want to play all three weeks to end the season?

David Nalbandian heard somewhere that he had to win both the next two events to qualify for the Masters. He heard wrong -- or, rather, he heard incomplete. Since Nalbandian is competing with Henman and Andre Agassi for the final spot (spots), he has to earn more points than they do to qualify, and since they're playing this week and next, the only way he can "force" a qualification is by winning both events. But chances are that the other candidates won't win everything in sight, either, and who knows if Coria will play? Nalbandian isn't in a great position, but he is still competitive (certainly more so than Joachim Johansson or Tommy Robredo, who are now some 60 Race points back). If he can just stop making those errors, he might get somewhere.
