Fognini's first tournament since his injury?

Filo V.
04-01-2012, 01:54 PM
Bedene vs Bolelli. Simone should have the weapons to take that match. If he does, he has a good draw to the semis. Although I would like Pere to also make the SF, so it's gonna be a hard match for me if the two play each other.

Fabio has a very easy draw and should make the semis here if he's in good shape. He needs the points with RG coming on the horizon so hopefully he can do what needs to be done.

Filippo has an good draw to the QF, at least. The only threat I see is Giannessi. Alessandro vs Filippo will be a good QF match should they play.

Victor has a good draw as well. Maybe Lojda can prove a threat in R2. Potito vs Victor will be a great QF match should they play.

Filo V.
04-01-2012, 01:59 PM
I'm going with a Bedene/Bolelli winner vs Starace final here. Poto loves these Italian challengers and brings his best. Bedene is the defending champ and will be motivated. If Simone can defeat him, I don't see him being stopped.

Brown def. Giannessi 6-1 6-4

I'm a little disappointed, because these Italian challengers last year, Alessandro was ripping them up. He's not the same player this season. But a good win from Dustin.

Filo V.
04-02-2012, 02:12 PM
If the entire match went how the three games we just saw did, I'd guess Dustin just overwhelmed Giannessi with his attacking.

Really good match from Dustin who is in great shape.

04-02-2012, 03:09 PM
I'm more impressed with Jaziri's game today than I have been in most of his other matches. Just for the fact his ball, his forehand, is better than I gave him credit for, it really shoots through the court, I knew it was his weapon, but it's a very nice shot. He's got a nice backhand, too. I also like the creativity in his game but I already knew he had that.

Filo V.
04-02-2012, 03:40 PM
Galvani def. Struff 6-2 7-6(4)

Stefano hit a backhand dipping passing shot on a lob from Struff, who missed the volley to lose the match.

Stefano annoys me but he's definitely an interesting player to watch.

Filo V.
04-02-2012, 04:23 PM
Jaziri def. Di Mauro 6-4 6-3

Jaziri is a good player. This is the second best I've ever seen him play, outside of his title in Geneva last November. I'm impressed. Everything he does is at a good level.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 09:30 AM
Already early it's obvious Bedene can't really do a whole lot to impact the outcome of this match, at least in rallies. He's gonna have to serve really well and try to get on top of rallies, because Simone's shots are way more imposing.

Simone kept letting Bedene in. He needed to put him away early. Bedene seems very very motivated. He's fighting for every ball and not missing a lot.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 10:06 AM
Such bullshit from Simone. He was so completely dominant the first half of the first set. He kept Bedene in it and now Bedene is playing really well. He still has all the chances in the world to come back, though.

Filo V.

Simone 1/14 second serve points won.

Really, the match is all about who can take the initiative first. Simone is doing a good job of it this set without making errors and is serving well.

Filo V.

And of course Jesse broken back when serving for it...

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 10:46 AM
Huta Galung cannot win an easy match. He's incapable. Has chances in every single return game, and then gets broken easily serving for the match. Lojda has won 48% of service points. Only someone like him would make it close.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 11:17 AM
Anyway, Bedene was the better player, so I'm not as disappointed as I would be, otherwise. Also, because Simone will likely make the French Open, regardless. Now onto Casablanca qualies. But this result hurts. He tried hard for nothing.

Bedene's return, backhand and his consistency were too much.

madmax
04-03-2012, 11:21 AM
Bolelli seems to have regressing everytime I watch him nowadays...I don't even see that shotmaking ability he possessed in the past anymore. Guy is in a serious crossroads of his career

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 11:26 AM
He's trying to play more consistent this season, he's making a concerted effort to play more solid. So he's not going for flash. His problem is he doesn't move well enough to play consistent tennis, he's a bad mover, especially to his forehand. He has to attack, but he's not consistent in attacking since he hits flat. And it's easy to counter-punch him, since he's always looking to protect his BH. He's got a ton of holes in his game. Guys with good court sense like Bedene has will eat him up.

Nathaliia
04-03-2012, 11:36 AM

Filo V.

Filippo is hitting the ball very well so far. I love the combinations of shots he uses to move his opponents around and off the court and, of course, his beautiful BH DTL. Bautista grinds but doesn't have the weapons to hurt Pippo.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 12:08 PM
Pippo should have broken there, and missed an easy FH. Let's see if it costs him. Making a few too many errors right now.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 12:20 PM
This Bautista mother-fucker is annoying. Pippo is having a lot of problems putting him away and finishing points, and making tons of errors.

All Bautista is doing is putting the ball in court and grinding. But Pippo is just donating right now, badly.

The match should be over. Bautista threw everything he had at Filippo to win the first set. Pippo needs to win this set 6-1 or 6-2, time to pull away. An early break should do it.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 01:10 PM
NO-ONE except for Gasquet can pull off the backhands Pippo just pulled off on back to back points. That's just so beautiful and classy from Filippo, especially the BH DTL on the run to set up the break point. Such a joy to watch him on clay, his movement on the surface, so natural and graceful.

Marti is still fighting hard. He's a grinder, but he can actually hit winning shots. Needs to do it more often.

Awful missed smash right there, though, would have gotten the break.

Filo V.

That was a heavy point. Marti keeps attacking Poto's serve and came to the net, but some great passing shots from Poto to win the point.

I love these little italian challengers. Always great support from the crowd to the home players.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 05:54 PM
I agree, the crowd is always awesome at these events and the Italians usually play their best for their supporters; they gain motivation. The crowd knows tennis really well and are fair. They are exuberant too. These events are the best opportunity to watch their favorites play since Italy only has one ATP event.

No, it's not the best win of Middelkoop's career, but he's had some good ones for a guy of his level. Fabio really wasn't there and shanked about 40 balls. He's not comfortable on the court right now, and he needs matches to feel secure.

The Prince
04-06-2012, 12:27 PM
Agree with that, and you also have to throw in the aspect of converting his success on clay into wins on hard-courts and indoors. He has rallied pretty well in this match and looked in a spot of bother after the second set.

He's shown some decent HC/indoor form, last season. I think his game definitely favors clay more, however. I don't see him being that great off clay, at least right now. He's not the best at creating pace, and he's more of a counterpuncher and could be overpowered off clay more easily.
