good luck to tomasz bednarek :D i'd be so happy if he beat capkovic but it'll be hard... i think tomek is a smarter player, but a part timer

Filo V.

Capkovic is the type of player a qualifier wants to play, with his ballbashing. I can see Bednarek winning for sure.

Not a surprise. Duckworth had 2 game points at 4 all in the third before getting broken. Rochette lost ten points on serve the final two sets.

Rovegun

sad that Duckworth lost... he´s still gaining some experience but it´s going to be a crucial and tough year for him on challenger tour but it is still his 1st year amongst the higher level of players.... hopefully the South American tour will be more successful for him...

Robert def. Rodrigues 6/2 2/6 6/4

Robert won 5 games in a row from *1/2 to take the first set.
In the second set the match turned round. Rodrigues won 4 games i na row from *2/2.
Robert was down a break twice early in the decider but broke back immediately, and managed to be up *4/3. The 8th game seemed to be the crucial one. Robert saved 5 or so break points and won 22-point-game. Then Rodrigues won to love to stay in the match. However Robert served it out to 15.

Any stream of St.Brieuc?

Filo V.
04-02-2012, 11:36 PM
There weren't any streams today which is weird, since there usually are of this event. Maybe tomorrow, hope so!

Robert-Rodrigues was very topsy-turvy throughout. Too bad Mathieu didn't win. Robert won't get by with a first serve percentage below 50% as it was most of this match, against better players.

Meffert def. Millot 7-6(2) 6-4

These clay courts are indoors and play quicker than normal, so this result is less surprising than it otherwise may be. The good serving players should see a lot of benefit here.

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 10:45 AM
Still shouldn't be this fast.. Gojowczyk wins 2 points on return in a whole set against De Schepper (1 of them was De Schepper's DF) :spit:

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 11:04 AM
Gojo definitely isn't a clay courter, and his ballbashing ways really don't work well on return. But that is a pretty horrible number

He broke in the second set and got broken immediately. His serve is just a real liability for him.

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 11:05 AM
I keep thinking for him that he has the game, but doesn't have the brain

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 11:11 AM
And he doesn't mind proving it, two times up a break early in the 2nd set, both time immediately broken back :silly:

Granollers little brother is leading on 2nd set vs Burquier, after losing a break lead on the first. Vamos Gerard!

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 11:16 AM
Broke again. Three breaks for Peter this set. Now can he hold this time?

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 11:17 AM
It's ridiculous, really. One break per set should be enough against De Schepper, but obviously not with Gojowczyk's serve

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 11:17 AM
4/17 service points for De Schepper this set.

Probably, Gojo is on a hot streak with his return, but his serve obviously sucks even more than we thought if he can't hold vs a horrible returner in De Schepper.

EDIT: You said it all for me

Yes, his serve really isn't good.

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 11:20 AM
I always thought his 1st serve actually is good, but he often had low 1st serve percentages, so I blamed that for him not being able to hold serve. Now against a returner like De Schepper he has >60% first serve, and still gets broken frequently.

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 11:22 AM
He holds this time after saving 2 break points. 4-6 5-2*

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 11:27 AM
Surprisingly holds serving for the set. Hopefully he continues returning as good as in this set, and serves a bit better :D

I'd say his first serve is average. Not awful, but there is nothing particularly good about it, either. He can get decent pace but I don't think he places it overly well.

Then, of course, the second serve is both horrible and unreliable. At least he held back-to-back service games, and he actually closed out the set without facing a BP :p

I think I've watched a stream from this tourney a year or 2 ago and these courts play much faster than your usual euro clay grindfests...expect indoor specialists to do very well here

Burquier def. Granollers-Pujol 6-4 6-4

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 11:40 AM
The courts do play fast, the bounce is low too. Indoor players should do well here. A guy like Gojowczyk will do well in terms of not having any outdoor conditions affecting his game.

Gillouthe best
04-03-2012, 11:45 AM
What a pity for Granollers! He was up a break on both sets.

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 11:46 AM
Already 5 double faults by De Schepper in 2 service games of the 3rd set
Gojowczyk had a chance to go a double break up, but didn't convert. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he got broken now.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 11:50 AM
Kenny's probably feeling the pressure and going for big second serves. Gojo will get broken sometime in the set, for sure. He needs another break most likely.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 12:05 PM
Gojo serving 31% in the third set but it's been enough to hold. He's having chances in basically all of De Schepper's service games and not breaking. Let's see if Gojo can hold his serve and his nerve.

Deathless Mortal
04-03-2012, 12:08 PM

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 01:37 PM
That's what I've been wanting to see all year from Daniel :sobbing:

Showing the heart to come back from way behind. What's most important was he got the serve clicking at the end of the breaker.

Gillouthe best
04-03-2012, 01:41 PM
And now he saves 2 BP , DGT hasn't been clutch since Madrid 2011, what is happening?

Also, he seems to be serving well, 7 aces already.

Deathless Mortal

Quickly falls to 0-2 down in the 2nd set now though

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 01:54 PM
He's still doing virtually nothing on return overall and he's won 61% of serve points, which isn't that great. As long as he can find a way to win. Matches like this are what he needs.

He defends 70 points next week. He's got to find a way to make a deep run at this event, at least a SF.

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 02:54 PM

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 03:50 PM

Filo V.
04-03-2012, 08:02 PM
Bednarek def. Capkovic 1-6 6-3 7-5

13 DFs, 45% first serves, 42% second serves won, and still a match victory for the Pole. Bednarek got more control of his serve in the third set which is what made the difference. Capkovic broke when Bednarek was serving for the match but was re-broken immediately. Most likely, it was a horrible match. But good win regardless for the doubles specialist.

Thanks Jonny..........Capkovic is just too crazy (mentally and gamewise) to ever feel comfortable believing he can beat anyone
