Surely Smethurst will be here ? ( Lower Ranked Brit ) At least in qualies . He always plays the first challenger in Britain ! Only ranked about 413 but he should surely deserve a wild card ! 2 10k Futures titles this year !

Karol Beck is OUT, due to back problems, he is in Spain on rehabilitation.

Filo V.
03-14-2012, 11:01 PM
Karol really struggles with his back. That always seems to be an issue for him. He's always walking around so stiffly. Hopefully he gets better quickly.

03-16-2012, 12:44 AM
It is a big shame, because courts in Sarajevo and Bath really fit his game, and could win at least one of them.

Main Draw:

Filo V.
03-17-2012, 03:59 PM
Scared about Michi's draw. Huta-Galung then potentially Torebko can both be losses. If he wins those matches, I expect a final. Torebko playing this week in Bath hopefully leaves him tired. And JHG is a bad returner, so Michi just have to serve well and he can pass through that match.

Andi's draw is OK but Golding is talented and can beat him. Andi cannot take the youngster for granted.

Every single British player direct into the draw is in the top half. De Bakker has a decent draw to make a run here if he ever finds the form he had a few years ago. Also a Brands vs Hernych rematch of Sarajevo here. Good opportunity for Jan to continue his food form here.

GL to Michi. He needs to win this event and return to the top 100 and should be motivated, especially after the drama from this week in Sarajevo.

Janowicz-Marchenko is a close match through two sets. JJ isn't serving dominant like he was in Sarajevo.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 05:39 PM
Janowicz from down two breaks of serve climbs all the way back in the third set. But now down break point for Marchenko to serve for the match. Wouldn't expect the Pole to be in this sort of match.

Filo V.

Copil's BH looks really good but he misses it too much. His entire game looks really natural. Hopefully he can improve the consistency over time.

03-20-2012, 12:51 PM
I know Copil's serve is good, but god, how bad is bakker return! What a joke. This is not even a pro player return...

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 01:02 PM
I don't consider Baker's return his weakness. I don't think he's an amazing returner but he's got issues outside of that, which hold him back. I will agree his returning today hasn't been that great but a lot of that is because of Copil's serve and the court speed.

Filo V.

Baker def. Copil 7-5 7-5

Pathetic, really, from Copil. Baker counter-punched and basically stayed consistent, moved the ball around a bit. Copil was simply error, error, error by the end, off both sides. Missed a fair few amount of volleys, and just got frustrated by Baker and couldn't finish any points off. He looked very immature and quite stupid today, disappointing. But a good win for the Brit.

Michi is playing a strong match today. Serving well, and too consistent from the baseline for Huta-Galung. Huta-Galung is serving poorly and making a lot of errors.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 03:28 PM
Berrer def. Huta Galung 6-3 6-4
Oswald def. Navarro 6-3 6-4
Ryderstedt def. Smethurst 6-1 6-4

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 03:30 PM
Good play from Michi. He keeps that up, and he can win the title.

Ryderstedt really dominated the match with the Brit wildcard Smethurst. Only eight service points lost.

Courts are fast but the bounce is a little higher than Sarajevo. Should be more breaks of serve this event.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 04:04 PM
Beck 6-1

Golding got upset with a line-call where Beck hit a winner that was called in. Overall, Andi is played OK and that's all that's been required. Just too much power for the young Brit.

03-20-2012, 04:07 PM
embarrassing player this Torebko, how James Ward got beaten by him is beyond me.

03-20-2012, 04:17 PM

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 04:18 PM
Michalicka def. Torebko 6-4 6-2

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 04:18 PM
Torebko is a decent player, but he's sort of wild, is mentally weak and can lose to anyone. Plus playing a qualifier who would have match practice here and be motivated, not surprising he lost.

Golding looks overwhelmed, really. Andi isn't playing amazing, just solid. Poor performance from the Brit.

Grigelis cannot hold serve whatsoever. Dismal service numbers. He's really regressed.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 04:21 PM
Best game of the match from Golding there.

03-20-2012, 04:29 PM
funnily enough i think rycka's success drove him to want to do better. almost like a friendly competition thing. With rycka out the motivation may be gone a little

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 05:12 PM
I agree, Misty. Also I think maybe just being on the challenger tour for a full-season really for the first time is something he's having to adjust to.

Grigelis did come back to win the second set down a set and break. He's really cleaned up his service numbers and has had more opportunities than Fischer on return in the third set. This would be a good win for him so let's see what happens.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 05:49 PM
Grigelis def. Fischer 4-6 6-3 7-5

Grigelis broke and held to win the match. Had to save some break points his final few service games and did so. Great win for him. Two guys who have better returns than serves, it isn't too surprising the match played out in this way.

03-20-2012, 05:59 PM
Plus playing a qualifier who would have match practice here and be motivated, not surprising he lost.

Torebko played the future event last week and won it at the exact same facility in Bath so missing match practice is not the reason. Mental weakness and a too bad first-serve rate kill his game. He needs his serve because thats one of his biggest strenghs.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 06:20 PM
Oh yeah, I forgot about the future, I remember seeing he played it. Guess the pressure of playing a challenger tournament and the added pressure from winning the future in Bath got to him. His first serve percentages always seem very low and he double faults too much. I don't rate Torebko that high solely because he's inconsistent as can be and I don't think he's a great match player nor has a great feel for the game. Also, I agree about the mental weakness.

Filo V.
03-21-2012, 02:36 PM
Hernych is the absolute worst match-up for Brands. Too good of a counter-puncher, good returner, consistent, too much court sense. Brands is an error machine.

Jan did seem tired at the end, but Daniel played well and dominated play after the start of the third. Really played with high intensity. Brands won two matches in Quimper but this is the second time he's passed R1 this year. Could end up giving him a spark in this event.

03-21-2012, 04:55 PM
Hernych was 2 levels above brands in the baseline exchanges, i think motivation was the key factor in the end.

Brands tennis is abit like bachingers, ballbashing and brainless

hernych on a normal day should be way to smart and skillfull for players like these.

Grigelis did come back to win the second set down a set and break. He's really cleaned up his service numbers and has had more opportunities than Fischer on return in the third set. This would be a good win for him so let's see what happens.

I'm currently leaning to Oswald to beat Grigelis in the next round. Did you see any of Oswald's match to compare it to?

Filo V.
03-22-2012, 12:12 PM
I didn't see it but I do know Oswald dominated on serve vs Navarro. Navarro is an awful returner, though. Oswald relies on his serve a lot. Grigelis really should win that match.

Filo V.
03-22-2012, 12:14 PM
Michalicka seems like a good returner. He's a former college kid. Michi needs to dominate here with his weapons.

03-22-2012, 12:15 PM
I put on the Berrer $1.10 candy into Oswald at $2.15. Decided on taking a risk, but I see Grigelis goes up an early break, then Oswald blows 2 opportunities to break straight bck

Filo V.
03-22-2012, 12:21 PM
I hope it works out..............I wouldn't favor Oswald over Grigelis. But if he serves big, he can win it.

Filo V.
03-22-2012, 12:22 PM
Michalicka has the type of game that can cause Michi some problems. Hope he keeps serving well.

03-22-2012, 12:51 PM
Grigelis has been struggling on his serve quite a bit lately, but his return game surprisingly improved by leaps and bounds...interesting, since he was pretty much all serve at the start of his career

Filo V.
03-22-2012, 01:05 PM
True, I thought he was a serve guy but apparently he isn't, or at least he's developed into someone who relies more on his return than his serve. It's fine if he can find a way to hold his serves easier than he has been in many of his matches lately.

Filo V.
03-22-2012, 01:06 PM
Michi is serving great and dominating second serve points. Good performance overall, Michalicka could have been tricky. This really is his title to lose.

Filo V.

Filo V.
03-22-2012, 01:48 PM
Ryderstedt has turned things totally around. Serving well, returning really well, and he's absorbing Beck's pace and counter-punching effectively. Andi is having a hard time beating Ryderstedt from the baseline.

Also backing his second serve up better, which means he's likely the better player in rallies.

Ryderstedt finally breaks for *4-3. Beck missed a couple second serves, and that was all it took for the Swede.

Brands with 2 BP's saved.

29-13 service points played in the second set between Brands and Jouan

Ryderstedt with 4 service winners in a row to win the second set 6-4.

78-66 points differential in Ryderstedt's favor. He is the better player if he keeps his head together, but hopefully Andi starts playing better.

Break him Brands!

03-22-2012, 03:22 PM
Well now Andi has a 3-0 lead in the third set. Andi's serve keeps bailing him out, but he put some returns in play to break for *2-0. Ryderstedt missed first serves and it cost him.

Beck def. Ryderstedt 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3

11 aces, 81% first serve percentage in the third set for Andi. Serve eventually bailed him out. Ryderstedt made a lot more errors in the third set, maybe fatigue.

good win andi

seems like he really picked it up in the third set

beck was completely outplayed for 2 and a bit sets.

I think he played a total of 3 good points in that time and they came in a row from 2-4 in the tiebreak.

Filo V.
03-22-2012, 07:07 PM
True. He really wasn't the better player in the match. But Ryderstedt had a couple of lapses in all three sets and it cost him an easier/easy win. Andreas picked up his serving and all it took was one fatal lapse from Ryderstedt in the third set to drop serve.

Brown 7-6(7)

Andi was the better player in the set, but Dustin hit a couple great backhands in the breaker and served well. BH passing shot with a Beck volley error to win the set.

Beck gets the early break in the second set as Dustin's service percentage dips.

Beck 6-4 second set.

Dustin isn't doing anything on return at all.

03-23-2012, 01:42 PM
Patethic display from Dustin today.

Filo V.
03-23-2012, 01:51 PM
Dustin would have had 0-40 to break at 3-*2, but the linejudge called a volley Beck hit out. Dustin hit a passing shot winner to win the point but it was replayed. Most likely will change the match completely.

03-23-2012, 02:11 PM
Great final game with 4 amazing winners from Dustin and he takes the match! 6-4 in the 3rd! C'mon!

Dustin was the better player in the third set, though.

I'm not happy, I wanted Andi to get to the finals. He really needed the points and now is out of the top 100, so this result displeases me, and also Dustin is too dangerous. If he wins the title, I'll be extremely unhappy.

As long as Michi Berrer wins the title here, I'm fine.

Too bad he didn't since I'd much rather see Janowicz here than Brown. Andi would have beaten the Pole.

Baker is upset because hit hit a ball that was called out and then corrected in. Baker missed the shot, and it was set point. Baker lost the set and he's been protesting for literally 10-15 minutes.

6-3 Jouan first set.

Filo V.
03-23-2012, 03:31 PM
Jouan had 7 break points before finally breaking and holding after Baker had a handful of break points. Jouan seems really serve dominant but he's a lot like Dustin, he can hit some great winners. Baker is the consistent counter-puncher but lacks weapons.

Filo V.
03-23-2012, 06:04 PM
Grigelis is picking off Berrer's serves. This is not going to be easy for Michi. Grigelis' flat shots and court positioning are giving Michi problems and he's not doing enough damage on return.

Filo V.
03-23-2012, 06:21 PM
Baker def. Jouan 3-6 6-4 6-3

Baker saved 13/14 break points, including a handful the final game of the match. Just too consistent overall for Jouan, kept running everything down, made Jouan hit the extra shot. Also counter-punched well and turned points around from defensive positions. Great win and great week for the Brit.

Mertl def. Mertens 6-4 6-3

Back to back challenger SF for Mertl of all players

Got a good draw and he's taken advantage, good for him. He sure loves fast courts.

insane point from Berrer in the MP

AWESOME defensive slice BH from Michi to win!!!!!!!!

That was a battle, Grigelis was honestly the better player the final two sets. His first serve % dropped in the final game and it cost him. So happy, my man for the title is still in it :)

Baker is one of the worst players ive ever seen, imagine his game on a clay court, grass court or even a outside hardcourt medium, fast or slow, he would be so exposed its not even funny.

he reminds of miloslav mecir but worse

lets pray to the tennis gods he doesnt win this tournament

03-24-2012, 11:16 AM
He is a decent counterpouncher when he has form. Last year he played great match with Schuettler in Astana on slow hardcourt.

Filo V.
03-24-2012, 02:36 PM
Dustin can overpower Baker whenever he chooses but his net approaches and constant S&V has hurt him in the second set. Baker is getting a read on returns now. Dustin's volleying comes and goes, he misses a lot of forehand volleys.

Filo V.
03-24-2012, 02:37 PM
Brown won the first set 6-4 and it's Baker up *5-3 in the second. Dustin lowered his intensity for like 15 minutes and that's all it took to lose control of the match.

Filo V.
03-24-2012, 02:41 PM
6-3 Baker second set. Dustin basically tanked after losing the break in the second. Third set basically comes down to how many errors Dustin hits and if he's getting tired or not.

Filo V.
03-24-2012, 03:15 PM
Brown def. Baker 6-4 3-6 6-2

Baker got Dustin MAD when he complained about Dustin's rituals/habits. The players had an argument and after that, the match totally changed. Dustin got focused and started being a slight bit more consistent while continuing to go for his shots. Totally overpowered Baker in the end.

Michi vs Mertl now. I will be so, so sad if Michi doesn't win the title. I'm fine with Dustin being in the final, but I'm scared he may take the title here, which would be awful. Hopefully not.

Very strange he had such a terrible last few months.

Mertl def. Berrer 2-6 6-4 6-3

Michi was clearly completely tired at the end. The match yesterday took everything out of him. It's his own fault, since he had no business being taking so far by Grigelis. He blew his chance of the top 100. I'm so disappointed.

What could have been a Beck vs Berrer final becomes this. Pathetic.

Mertl is pretty horrible overall. Confidence does wonders.

Ad Wim
03-24-2012, 05:29 PM
I only saw the last games, but he completely outplayed Berrer from the back. Lots of winners, aggressive play, looked good. I thought he was more an all-serve guy.
Wins over De Bakker and Berrer is very impressive.

Filo V.
03-24-2012, 05:33 PM
Michi was tired, IMO, had Michi held his serve the first game of the third set when he had 40-15, he'd have won the match. Anyway, his *first* serve is good, he plays a lot like Karol Beck. Very similar style of play to a lot of Czech/Slovak/Croatian/etc. players. Usually, he makes mountains of errors and hits many double faults. He likes fast courts so the courts the past two weeks suit his game.

His wins are impressive until you look at the context of the victories. He's riding a confidence wave.

03-24-2012, 05:58 PM
His first serve is actually very dangerous, at least from what I´ve seen from him, he is serving bombs left and right...and yeah, he is definitely a fast court sepcialist, and they sometimes make such surprising runs like this one indoors.

03-24-2012, 09:16 PM
yeah michi was already dead against grigelis, i don't know how he won that one

good last 2 weeks from mertl, he is a very cool laid back guy, one of coolest who have ever played in wroclaw, actually i'm happy he has his 5 minutes now, although yes he can be so raw on court sometimes
