Weird end, hit an ace, Becker challenged, was out and hit his second serve in the net.

Raonic is having an easy ride on serve but his stats returning have hardly been impressive. If he's so serve reliant against the quality of players he's faced at San Jose & Memphis I think he'll have a lot more trouble in Indian Wells. A good returner could catch him out in a service game or grab a tiebreak and it looks like Milos would have to mainly hope he's gifted breaks rather than earning them.

And to those who think this "variety" is good - the crowd response to the match says it all about how attractive it is. Ace. Unreturnable. Ace. DF. 2 shot rally. Ace. Really hope Melzer brings his quality returning tomorrow - Milos would have deserved the title if he wins it but I'd feel happier for Melzer to get the much needed 500 points than Milos & his serve.

Can pretty much a serve alone get you Masters & Slams? (Yes Milos is not Karlovic but his groundstrokes are way outside the top 30 IMO) - I think 2012 will give us the answer to this question as Isner & Raonic try to make their move....

Oh yes the smart scheduling. Roddick has also been choosind this schedule for years now and didn't work out so great. Playing against players ranked around 40 in indoors fast hard isn't going to do you a whole lot of good in IW and Miami where the top guns play.

Perhaps that is rather due to Roddick's absymal level of playing nowadays?
The fellow is out of it and couldn't manage to take his chances, got noone else for that to blame but himself.

Players are free to choose whatever tournament they'll be playing (apart from the mandatory ones of course) and yes, if it's your goal to pick up some nice easy-peasy points, why not do so at a tournament with an 'easier' (on paper, that is) entry list?
That's what I call intelligent scheduling, indeed.

Why? We've seen him in IW and Miami precisely ONCE - hardly a pattern of poor performance after playing American indoor swing. If he can take advantage of weaker fields in America, might as well.

He can play outdoor hard, he did okay in Australia last year and Chennai this year as I recall so I don't think he needs to do a bunch of extra outdoor work to be all ready for the big 1000s coming up.

How about doing what Federer does (he seems to be pretty good on scheduling) go to Europe train on medium fast hard court, play in Dubai and then go to IW.

He probably feels much more at home in the US and has a lot more support there. Not to mention the good memories of getting his first title in San Jose.

Besides, he's still young and trying to earn some money. Federer couldn't care less about money nowadays, for Raonic it's certainly an issue and he's likely to get a bigger paycheck by getting deeper in tournaments with easier fields.

In 2010 Roddick made the final of IW and won Miami and played San Jose and Memphis before them.
