Marseille SF: JM Del Potro overcomes JW Tsonga 6-4 6-7(9) 6-3

Close match for two sets... Tsonga saved a mp in the second set tb, and Delpo had saved 5 sps before losing the second set.

Ultimately Del Potro was the steadier player, Tsonga paid dearly for one loose game at the beginning of the final set.

Tsonga served 26 aces.

Good match :yeah:

Congrats to Juan and good luck in the final. :)

As for Jo credit that he fought so hard in the second but it's sad he practically handed the match away so early in the third.

I don't know what is up with Juan, he still can't play the way he wants to.

I should have known not to pick Tsonga to win- the clown is too strong.

But Del Po was the better player, and Tsonga made a ridiculous amount of unforced errors.

Not good at all, but he gets the win and keeps a Llodra-Del Potro final alive.

The tie break was close all along, he did have a couple of loose points at **5-4 . He's been awful at tbs for a long time, but Tsonga did serve quite nicely during the tb.

Delpo blowed his chances to close the match in two sets but fortunately managed to keep steady to win the match in the 3rd. Now he is the favourite to clinch the title tomorrow. Definitely needs to develop that department where he is wasting his chances to close sets/matches as it happened with Baghdatis in Sydney or with Tsonga this week in Marseille. However he is in the right way to return back to the top 5. Well done:yeah:

Del Potro's place is easily at number 5. Whether he can climb higher than that is the real question.

Good job!

Del Potro's first win with a match point up losing set (comparing to veterans: Federer - 11, Roddick - 9, Hewitt - 8, Ferrero - 7) All of them played +100 tournaments more than Del Potro.

The difference between these two is that Delpo can produce controlled aggression and Tsonga can't, he is all the time on edge of horror miss and outstanding winner. And backhand obviously

What a bizarre statistic. Why would anyone even have that information?

That's far from the only difference, but obviously the key to Del Potro's success is that he can hit hard while keeping a low ue rata.

People complain about Tsonga's ues and poor returning but that's who he is, if he could control ues while keeping the firepower he would be the GOAT, but it's almost physically impossible to do both. IMO he has improved his BH and can stay in rallies for longer waiting for the right time to unleash.

This was a match of two excellent players of roughly the same level, only one could win, that's all.

Presumably Del Potro will be involved in 4-5 matches of this type in the next six-seven years.

If Federer wins over Delpo in Dubai SF it would be so damn weird.

Not a surpring result. The Pony is just a better player. He is easily the 5th best player in the world. He could even break into the top three if he stays fit and maintains his decent form.

Nice match. :)

Both players smacking the cover off the ball, although that was to be expected. Tsonga came up with some big winners but, for much of the time he seemed impotent, with Del Potro deflecting everything back including the serves.

Del Potro well on his way back into the top 8, and he'll surely qualify for London WTF. I wonder what the situation will be if he does qualify, and Argentina makes the Davis Cup final. :o

Not yet.

He looks better by the month, but his game style is unchanged - he is too one-dimensional. On a brilliant day, he can beat anyone. But, otherwise, each of the 'Big 4' can break him down in the majority of encounters imo.

A solid #5 is his limit at the moment imo. Federer will probably be the first of the 'Big 4' to vacate that group, and Del Potro should aim to be an immediate successor.

Delpo was fine and mentally was and is the strongest. Tsonga was more interesting on the baseline though.

Yeah, he's coming back to form. I'm looking forward to the moment he reaches his top form when he's capable of beating Federer, Nadal and everyone else.
