It was a shame. Takao held serve at 4-4 after being 0-30 down, but looks like the injury was serious and he couldn't continue, even if he was just one game away from the match

Had to withdraw from the doubles too. A real pity because these courts suit his game perfectly.

i think benjamin mitchell might have withdrew, i'm not positive but if u look at flashscore.com they have wang listed vs capkovic for matches for tommorow, why would they do this if the match hasn't been played yet,

Ito won 36 64 60, saved 15-40 at 1-1 in the 2nd set and got his first break of the match at 5-4. Looks like Barton's level dropped dramatically after that.

Bhambri, Sugita and Groth are also into QFs

Filo V.
03-08-2012, 04:01 AM
Top 100? Don't know about that but Wang was a touted junior with reason. His problem is a similar one that many Asian players have faced recently, which is his serve and general power aren't up to the level required to be an ATP player. But at this level, he's very good.

GL to Jimmy over Jaziri, one of the most overrated players of MTF. Jimmy should really beat him with his consistency.

Also, if Soeda wins today, I fully expect Rieschick to take him out again like he has in the past.

Wang was already ranked 85 at just 21 years old, but then was sidelined for 2 years due to injuries. I think he could've stayed in the top-100 without all those setbacks.

Also, happily for Filo :p, looks like Soeda is gonna lose today, 6-7 0-4 down against Moriya right now.

Jaziri overcame an awful start and beat Wang 06 64 63

Filo V.
03-09-2012, 04:12 AM
Hopefully, Groth continues serving like a machine and takes out Jaziri. I do NOT want Jaziri to be in the top 100. He winning this event would be only slightly less bad than Soeda doing so.

Ito needs the points as he defends a challenger title in a couple of weeks. Gritty win for him today over a good opponent in Bhambri. He's the favorite for the title now, IMO.

why do you hate him so much?

Filo V.
03-09-2012, 04:56 AM
I don't necessarily hate him, but I do think he's way overrated. Dramatically overrated, for several reasons. And that makes me resent him quite a lot. I think he's an average challenger player and I think most of his following that he's gotten now are bandwagoners.

Filo V.
03-09-2012, 04:57 AM
If he makes top 100, he'll drop out of it as soon as he makes it, so I don't want him to make it. I'd rather guys who I know could maintain a spot there take it.

willoughby
03-09-2012, 05:45 AM
I think it would be nice if he makes the top-100, even if just for one week. He's 28 already, and as you said, he probably won't last long in those positions. That would be like a dream come true for a player who has been playing mainly Futures in his career till some months ago, and also great news for Tunisian tennis (and Arabic tennis in general).

Ito vs Moriya in semifinals is great. Finally a breakthrough tournament for Hiroki. He won a future on grass two weeks ago, and if he keeps up with this form, we'll be able to see him playing Wimbledon qualies in a few months (I think he's pretty good on grass and fast surfaces; probably a future top-100 as well)

03-09-2012, 02:34 PM
funny scorelines yeah

jaziri isn't really overrated, but the fact he's a laid back player from arabic country (and handsome, imo  ) makes him generally liked. the effort against tsonga gave him more popularity. i think people miss a character like younes el aynaoui on tour, well younes was one of a kind, but jaziri is a very nice and relaxed guy too (younes game wasn't any special, unlike arazi's, but younes was loved nevertheless)

we rarely see someone from that region breaking through. also look he's such a late bloomer, i think he partied too much when he was young :p

ons jabeur should have a better career than him :) also, isn't selima sfar working for al jazeera now? :)

Henry Chinaski
03-09-2012, 02:42 PM
would be good to see Jaziri in the top 100 for several reasons.

Regional representation, nice game, great personality for starters.

Oh and it would annoy Filo V? Well there's another.

Filo V.
03-09-2012, 04:15 PM
I agree on the regional representation aspect. I actually thought about that last night, and that's the ONLY reason I would be happy with his presence in the top 100, because yeah, based on everything I've read and seen, he's a relaxed, cool dude, he has a relaxed demeanor on court, but guys like Brands and Robert have similar dispositions and I don't like them. I don't care about the sentimental aspect. But it would be cool to see an Arabic player making a breakthrough and hopefully spur more Arabic representation within the sport, and it would be a great moment for his career, and maybe he'll prove me wrong and make something more of it.

I still believe, though, that Tsonga match is where the bandwagon really started. I'd say 80% of people who follow him here didn't even know him until that match. I think he's a flash-in-the-pan player who can make a deep run 4 weeks in a season and that's it.

He'll be provisionally #99 now but the rankings do not update until the next Monday after the upcoming one. Really we won't know his official ranking until after Miami and the schedule normalizes. But sadly Jaziri looks like he'll win, so I can't be happy. Jaziri winning evens out the happiness I have about Ito.

I don't think Ito is a pusher

He's like a better version of the pre-2012 Soeda. But it's nice to see Asian and Arabic tennis both progressing. Even if I don't personally like the players, more representation at the top levels of the game from different countries and more interest in tennis from these countries as a result, is always a good thing.

Ito's top 100 stay could be short but at least he's in it for the time being. Great job not getting deflated after losing the first set and dominating the final two. Served a lot better as the match went on and that obviously really helped matters.

Ito has been right in that 105-120 range for like 2 full seasons now so it's time really to see what he's capable of at the ATP level. Hopefully we'll get to see that happen and he starts choosing to play in bigger events, and not become another Soeda who traps himself in Asia.

The best part about this result is Jaziri is denied top 100 status :) Now 33 points to defend this upcoming week, hopefully, he loses R1 in China.

Malek shouldn't worry about his ranking at all. He doesn't have much to defend for a while after next week and as long as he keeps winning matches he will put himself in a good position for the next couple slams.

He played some grueling matches this week so it's good he should have a very good first couple matches next week.
