So sad R.I.P.

American singer and actress Whitney Houston has died at the age of 48, her publicist Kristen Foster has said.

The cause and the location of her death were unclear, Ms Foster told the Associated Press news agency.

Reports of Whitney Houston's Death Denied

Whitney Houston's rep issued a shocked denial today to counter reports that the singer/actress has died

In a statement, her publicist, Nancy Seltzer, said, "I've just spoken to Whitney. She is perfectly fine and does not understand why, with everything going on in the world right now, they have to find new rumors to dig up. She is home in New Jersey with her family." Seltzer said people were calling the singer at home and sobbing, after apparently having heard reports of her death over the radio. According to the rumors, Houston had died of a drug overdose.

Fans and the media have speculated about Houston's health after her performance at Friday's Michael Jackson tribute concert at Madison Square Garden, where she appeared shockingly thin, even skeletal. The singer then bowed out of the second night of the concert without explanation, prompting heightened speculation about her health. Houston has long been rumored to have drug problems, and in Tuesday's edition of the New York Daily News — which was evidently published before horrific terrorist attacks brought the city to a standstill — Seltzer denied fresh reports that her celebrity client was on drugs.

"Whitney has been under stress due to family matters, and when she is under stress, she doesn't eat," Seltzer told the New York tab at the time.

Houston and her husband, singer Bobby Brown, have had a history of drug- and alcohol-related issues, including possession of marijuana charges for Houston in January 2000, which were later dismissed, and a 75-day stint in jail for Brown in 2000, after he violated his probation (stemming from 1996 drunken driving charges).

Total f***up by ABC with a news item from two days after 9/11 denying a death rumour and a banner on top of that saying she is dead.

She apparently died in Ottawa and in the Beverly Hilton, LA.

I'm absolutely shocked and gutted right now. Whitney was a once in a lifetime kind of talent with a once in a lifetime kind of voice. I was always hoping that she would be able to turn the corner and get over her demons, but due to this very sudden death, I guess some kind of overdose seems very likely. RIP Whitney! You will never be forgotten.

The police are superfluous. If TMZ said she died at the Beverly Hilton, then she died at the Beverly Hilton.

I wasn't really a fan of Whitney's brand of music, but gosh was she accomplished as a singer. I'm nowhere near as gutted as I was upon learning of Ofra Haza's passing, because this was nowhere near as unexpected, but vocal talent of this caliber is hard to come by. Sad news.

As usual, Bimbo, you are spot on and 100% right. Selling tens of millions of albums worldwide is clearly a sign of an obscure singer waiting to be discovered.

Would it have helped had she won the Eurovision?

Great loss for music,
the ease with which she sang was amazing, and her attractiveness and non-intrusive and non-aggressive sex appeal were just irresistible...
Although I must admit that her last recordings, compared with prime ones, were more than enough proof that as a singer her career was, sadly, long ago over but than won't overshadow a bit her eternal status of a true music icon.
True diva that earned her title by singing unlike 21st century pop queens.

:cuckoo: She was a megastar

I have never read that she was called a megastar in the media, not even after her death. A superstar, yes, but not a megastar. I only know about 3 artists who have been labeled a megastar: Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Madonna. If you want to put Whitney Houston on the same level as these three, you must be on some serious crack. Megastars have constant success for 20 years and more in as many different countries as possible, both for albums and concerts. Whitney Houston had a few good songs over a period of a few years and I really like her, but calling her a megastar is pure exaggeration. However, she definately had the ability to reach megastar status.

Huge loss for modern music.

I loved almost everything that she released, such a uniquely confident voice. The Bodyguard was one of my favourite films as a kid, I watched it so many times. She was just the epitome of beauty to me in that.
I Have Nothing always gave me chills in the last part.

And Bilbo is ridiculous, as per usual. She was the star of the 90s.

BigJohn
02-14-2012, 12:30 AM
She was bigger in the 80s... That's when she got 7 #1 singles in a row.

(Note that the clarification is not to mock you but to highlight just how much Bimbo's statement is idiotic.)

Agreed. Not surprised at all given that she was on drugs for more than 10 years, are they so foolish not to know that drugs and alcohols can kill people? Though 48 is still not old, but its not that she was 18. Not surprised for the death of Amy W and Michael Jackson as well.

nice speech indeed. Carefully worded, witty, but unpretentious and balanced. It could have turned into an ode, instead he pictured her as the real person they love, with a touch of humor and some real life situations.
