What's your favourite player's peak match or best tennis you've seen?

USO 2009 R16 vs Nadal. Gael played out of his mind for two sets hitting routine 110-120 mph forehands just a thing of beauty. Also it was a night match on Ashe which made it even better.

Discuss and describe why you picked that specific match.

Pretty pathetic that a top player's peak match is one that he loses in 4 sets..

Tell me about it :o. Gael does have some great three-set performances. Doha 2009,2012 vs Rafa. Paris 2010 vs Murray and Federer. RG 2008,2011 Ferrer were his all-time best performances in GS but his level of play was higher in the USO match.

Not sure, Rafa had a lot of great matches where he played extremely good over his career.
I would call 2 when I liked his attitude and tactics the most:

2007 Indian Wells final vs Djokovic
2010 US Open final vs Djokovic

And in terms of Pim-Pim Johansson, probably the famous 2004 US Open QF vs Roddick

You picked two great matches with Pim-Pim's great performance shame he couldnt beat Hewitt in the next round and Rafa was on an insane level against Novak in that GS Final.

Yeah, Pim-Pim was clearly tired in that match, plus didn't really bring his heart to it, cause they were very close back then (not sure about now :p).
And attacking Rafa during those 2 matches was just perfect to watch, I hate when he goes back to pushing when game-plan doesn't work  BH in those games was

Rafa and Roger played so many great matches that it would be hard to choose just one.

For Juan Carlos Ferrero, I would say it was his 2000 Davis Cup victory.

I don't have a particular favourite player.

I did enjoy Olderer handing a beatdown on Duck in AO'07 SF.
I also liked Tsonga's demolition of Rafa in AO'08 SF.
del Potro's slaughterhouse in the US'09 SF was notable.
Rafa against Nole in US'10 Final was pretty awesome as well.

I actually didn't like the quality of that match too much. Especially because I felt that Roger played better in the first 2 sets, but lost both, and completely opposite in the next 2 - when Rafa IMO played 3-4th better and lost them.

I'm not saying only because of quality, but the symbolic thing of beating Fed on grass, in Wimbledon final. It chenged Rafa's carreer completely, from that moment.

I'd say Federer's match against Roddick at AO 07 was one of his best displays, partly because playing Roddick suits him so well, but that second set he was just inventing winners, it remains an insane set for me. Not sure about an overall peak match as there are many where the opponent played better but then it's hard to tell whether it's a better peak match if it's closer.

For Soderling I like his RG win over Federer in 2010 more than his more famous win over Nadal in 2009.

Federer started really really good in that match but Soderling was like a natural force growing more and more powerful for every game. Then he was crunching his serves and groundstrokes so hard that even the commentators were in disbelief. Very solid match and no choking or hesitation in the critical stages.

In terms of quality Soderlings peak match was the SF/F in Båstad of 2011. He's never played better than that. The only shame is that clay season was over then and mono was arriving

I'm gonna go with

1. Fernando Gonzalez - Tommy Haas 6-1 6-3 6-1 (semifinal AO 2007). 3 ue's from Gonzalez in a best of 5 match is all you need to know actually.
2. David Nalbandian - Rafael Nadal 6-4 6-0 (final Paris 2007). Nalbandian at his best, never seen anyone use angles like he did in that match.
3. Marat Safin - Pete Sampras 6-4 6-3 6-3 (final UO 2000). Hello world, meet Marat Safin, who was this guy on the other side of the net again?

EDIT: thank you mods :)

Gonzo Vs Haas is the definition of unplayable.

Safin Vs Sampras was impressive but some of it was down to tactical ineptness from Sampras. I don't think Marat actually hit a winner in the baseline exchanges, although there weren't that many.

Ajde.

I know a lot of people(Fed fans) will say Federer-Roddick AO 07. While that was a spectacular performance from the Swiss, it was against a guy who can do nothing against Fed when Fed is playing well.
There are a lot of BO3 mtches that come to mind but I will go with a GS match, to be precise the USOPEN 2004 Final vs Hewitt, Federer won 6 0 7 6 6 0. I chose this match simply because Hewitt did nothing wrong on the day. And to deliver a double bagel in a slam final against the fighter that is Hewitt! And worse thing is that the scoreline actually LIES here. It should have been an even more brutal massacre with Roger having gone up a break at 5-3 in the second set. But Lleyton with his legendary fighting abilities crawled his way back to 6all, only to be put away easily in the TB with Vitagerer. This match wasnt the result of Hewitt not playing well or giving his everything, it turned out the way it did because Federer played at a level that that only he is perhaps capable of summoning. :worship:
I particularly remember a CC FH winner that Fed hit midway through the second set which had such an absurd angle and stayed so low that it bounced TWICE before Lleyton scrambling at the baseline could get his racquet on it.
As Hewitt said at the net after the match, "Too good, mate."

Ah yes. Easily makes my top 5 too. Those BHs he hit that day:inlove: Especially recall a ridiculous BH half volley pickup off the baseline from a Blake FH return(bomb) when down Break pt. Those were the times....:worship:

I'd have to disagree with that one. He choked in the second set and Hewitt got robbed of some crucial line calls by Norm Chryst. I still think his play in Wimbledon 2005 was better.

So many to choose from. I have particular affinity for the 2008 Fed vs Murray US Open final. A complete HC masterclass. Fed went out to put the fightners on Murray....and got a bit carried away. I still remember the reports coming out of the match from journos amazed at how hard Fed was crushing the ball that day. A beautiful match at a hard time in his career.

I actually didn't like the quality of that match too much. Especially because I felt that Roger played better in the first 2 sets, but lost both, and completely opposite in the next 2 - when Rafa IMO played 3-4th better and lost them.

Agreed. They took turns choking in that match. Super duper great match, right :spit:

Gonzalez against Haas (AO 2007) was pure destruction. If I'm not mistaking Gonzo hit 3 UE's that match. 3!!!! He was just ripping his FH all over the place, pretty much everything was a winner. Best match I've ever seen 1 player play.

Federer against Roddick (AO 2007), at the same tournament, same round. Remember Roddick not knowing what to do at all.

Not my fav but has to be mentioned. Nadal against Federer (RG 2008). The only time Roger got completely blown off the court at RG.

Roland Garros 08 against Federer, the best clay courter of all time, putting up a masterclass against arguably the greatest of all time.

And US Open 2010 against Djokovic as well for me, for Rafa to get out of his comfort zone, and play like he did against Novak. That was a special, special performance. Maybe not as great as RG 08, but for me, much more impressive.

As for some of my others.

Roddick, tough one, he's been great several times against Federer, but ended up losing. I think I'd pick US Open final of 2006. He had some great matches in 2003, his comeback against Nalbandian at the USO was brilliant.

Tsonga, vs. Rafa AO 2008 or Federer Wimbledon 11, can't decide.

Monfils, when he beat Roger in Bercy, what a match

Verdasco, AO Sf 2009 against Nadal obviously

Federer/ Del Potro 10 2009. Monster performance. Unbelievable.

Tsonga/ Nadal AO 2008: The most furious I have ever seen nadal on a court.

Murray/ Troicki Roland Garros 2011. OK Murray almost lost, but the shots he pulled while barely moving were almost Fognini-like.

Murray's best match was Shanghai 2010 F v Fed

no, Murray's level in the last 2 sets against Nadal was insane, he dropped 4 points and produced a extra tasty bagel in the final set with a display that would have made even Rod Laver and No.1erer himself proud. Shanghai was just very very good at his GOAT tourney, as was USO 08 SF.

Oh, and to the OP if you want to watch a epic match that isnt over 3 hours then check out Murray vs Djokovic 2011 Rome Masters Semi Final, one of the best in recent years for sure.

Nalbandian vs Roddick USOpen or Nalbandian - Nadal, Madrid...The first was so good and he really dismantled Roddick in the first 3 sets until a crowd calling "out" robbed him of the match...but the match against Rafa was fantastic

Murray v Nadal at USO '08.

It was the first time that I saw that he could really challenge for majors ( ok he's not won one yet.. ), he played so aggressive against the then no.1 who was the player to beat and served like an absolute beast. If only he could've repeated that form again Fed in 3 slam finals between then. It was the only time that someone had pushed Nadal to near exhaustion and sucking for breath.

Kohli vs. Roddick Australian Open 2008

That was just absolutly insane. It was ridiculous how many winners kohli hit in that Match!

That was ok an all, but seriously, people make it out like it was godlike tennis when really it was only good, personally, I feel Kohlshrieber was handed that match on a play by a very defensive player who also came to the net (in typical Roddick style) quite a bit. Most players would have beaten Roddick that day. Notice how most players not ranked insanely highly have their best days against Roddick.

Roddick's highest level (Federer W04). Got unlucky with conditions.
Safin - US Open 2000, AO 2004 (Pretty much through all of it until he gassed in the final) & AO 2005 he had loads of 'peak play matches'.

Nadal

Peak tennis was probably Aus Open 09 SF vs Verdasco - anyone would have lost to that Verdasco and I still don't know how he won it. Just kept raising the level higher and higher when needed. But in terms of what was a culmination of all of his various skills on a tennis court I think it has to be 2010 US Open Final v. Djokovic - toughest opponent on a hard court for him; one of the most important matches of his career; turned up the aggression and brought that serve. Novak played great but Nadal was up to the task. Played his best match at the US Open when he needed to most.

That was definitely one of his most impressive tournaments. If he had been a little more experienced / less tight, he would have very probably beat federer in the final (he had set points but chocked miserably) and would have won his first slam.
