Simon has lost 3 mp-up matches so far, each time against a player with MON as a prefix

Monaco 6-4 2-6 5-7 2 mp (Casablanca '05)
Montanes 7-5 4-6 6-7(4) 1 mp (Estoril '09)

Well, glad Monfils won. The lesser of two evils mugs.
Berdych and Kohlschreiber must be liking their chances after watching this.

Monaco and Monfils are themselves mental midgets, so interesting

Surprisingly entertaining match for this match-up I thought. Credit to Monfils mainly who had the balls to be really aggressive, and even more strangely the consistency to win in the end.

Only saw from the end of the second set onwards, Simon had a ton of opportunities, mostly saved by Monfils with some massive serves and points though.

He's still in the doldrums, losing matches he should win- this could have been the match to snap him out of it, but it's miles better than the end of last year anyways.

Out of those 7bps, Monfils had something like three aces, 2 serve winners and one massive down the line backhand winner. One of the 2 serve winners wasn't quite unreturnable (still 200+km/h though), but the only real chance for Simon was the dropshot.

I really don't think the match was that bad, weird pavlovian reflex for everyone to decide this was shit, it really wasn't.

Yeah, I'm surprised they haven't started calling it a pushfest yet, when they were both going for their shots and Simon even served and volleyed a bit.

You're assuming that people on General Messages actually watch the match before they criticize it which none of them actually do.

Solid indeed. Simon made multiple other errors though in that game - it's not just about the breakpoints. If you can't break when the opponent gives you 4dfs in a single game, something is wrong.

It was OK the first two sets. Simon neutralises Monfils, he couldn't pull off the same gameplan as his previous two, and you see the weakness in his point construction in particular - he has little between grinding and blasting, neither of which extremes work against Simon. He said it in the on-court interview after his last match: he has no idea what tactics to use against Simon.

The third set was a bit painful though.

Monfils has one of the biggest forehands around which he produces on average once a set. The rest of the time he spend 3 metres behind the baseline junk balling and hitting ridiculously lethargic looking slices.

Hewitt =Legend
02-05-2012, 02:52 AM
They need to restructure the courts whenever Monfils plays Gasquet.

leng jai
02-05-2012, 02:53 AM
They should be made to play on club courts where theres 1 metre between the baseline and the back fence.

Glad I missed this pushfest. Doesn't sound like Monfils even did much clowning around to give it some entertainment value. Better player won at least...still don't understand how Simon is even in the Top 100, much less how he ever made it into the Top 10.
