Canada DC captain taking shot at Monfils.

Is this guy serious? Whens the last time Canada had a Top 20 player let alone four in the Top 16. Come talk to me when Raonic reaches World No.7 2 MS Finals 3 GS Quarterfinals and a GS semifinal. Not to mention that Gael has won five of his last 6 DC ties including wins over Nalbandian, Ferrer, and Tipsarevic and his only loss came to Djokovic right before Nole went on his massive run.

Look the guy is beyond frustrating but we all know he is a Top 5 player at his best. Unfortunately that only happens in France and Doha.

He is awesome to watch when he's on fire... and I know he's also an incredibly frustrating player to be a fan of, I've been there myself. But you know, it's not fair to bash Monfils like that. Why don't people pick on other worse mugs like Troicki?

I know Troicki doesnt even have great results like Monfils and he doesnt get hated on like Gael does.

I welcome it. I'd love to see it light a fire under Monfils ass. I do think he has trouble with inspiration at times so if this does the trick hell yea! Bad move by Canada.

Im sure he can teach his players how to do acrobatics while hitting with tremendous power like Monfils can in every surface:haha:

He will regret his words next weekend believe me theres nothing Gael loves more than playing for his country.

Monfils is an incredibly talented flake. He's not saying anything we don't already know.

Sure, Monfils will beat Milos if he plays his best, but who knows what you're going to get from the guy from match to match (or even game to game)?

Gael is a different player in Davis Cup then he is in regular tour events. Should be a good match though its not like I hate Raonic I am just getting sick of tennis analysts bashing Monfils 24/7. Theres other players like Troicki that deserve to get bashed as well.

He said Monfils when on fire can win any tournament, any week. But he often has off-performances. And playing Monfils when he goes mentally AWOL is a good deal. This is just the truth.

And who does he have on the Canadian team thats better than Gael?? Exactly my point is that you shouldnt be taking shots at other players if you cant back it up.

Also its not just him everybody likes to hate on Gael because they dont and will never understand his personality.

Chill pal. All he said was because Monfils has a history of mental walkabouts, he HOPES he will have one during the tie. Thats all. He wasnt insulting Gael as you are making out of it.

And, you dont need to be a better player to beat your opponent. You just need to play better on the day.

They are not playing against Troicki in the Davis Cup next week. Just randomly bashing Viktor Troicki propos of nothing -- now that would be mean. :p

Anyways they are trying to drum up support and excitement among Canadians for the match. It's normal  People aren't going to come if they the guy says 'we don't have a prayer.'

Really dumb. If I'm Monfils and I hear of this (and he will), then I now have a point to prove and a little extra incentive to go out and kick some Canadian butt. And the captain is underestimating Monfils if he thinks the Frenchman can't go out and do that.

So it'll be like when Greig said England would make the Windies grovel, and we turned around and dealt out a 5-0 blackwash - but the ribbing and the slashes across the bows are part of sport - makes it interesting.

If [Gael] Monfils gets to play, he said of the world No. 13, we all know hes beatable. He can win a tournament any *given week, but hes had his share of counter-performances. Hopefully, its one of those weeks.

The ONLY thing this captain said is that Monfils might be beatable because he tends to have more than a decent share of mental walkabouts. Are you claiming that this isn't just the obvious truth?

If anything, his remarks might ignite a bit of a fire in Monfils to fight and show this guy being wrong.

And my fav players having 26 GS titles... I can't see what that has to do with the subject at hand here. Zilch.

Dude...I wouldn't exactly say "He is beatable" is taking a shot at Monfils...He is simply stating an obvious fact...Monfils is a great player but probably one of the most beatable top players...Look at some of his losses in the past year or two, in important matches..Fognini at the FRENCH, Kukushkin at AO, Granollers at Valencia...I mean come on, it's a totally warranted statement. relax. and I think Raonic would have a great match with Gael.

I don't understand why people are upset. And I like Monfils, I love French tennis in general.

Of course, being the Canada captain, he has to say something positive about his team's chances. What kind of captain would he be if he said: "Sorry, guys, we have no hope against the French".

The problem is that those comments may backfire and make Monfils an even more dangerous player. :)

I just don't get the way that Canada has gone about this. Ever since they found out they were playing France, there have been these digs. If they think Monfils is beatable, the easiest way is to not wake him up. Yes, he has matches where he lets down but not in matches as hyped as this one and adding this on is just asking for trouble.

i dont think theres anything wrong with what the canadian coach said. canada will most likely lose but their only chance is if raonic can win both his singles matches somehow. i dont see pospisil (or dancevic) beating either of these guys

Hopefully Niemeyer I think for now at least.

I don't understand the problem?

Monfils is beatable.

Yes, he is a very talented player, but he is infuriating for anyone to support. He can beat Nadal one day, and then lose to Kukushkin or Fognini on another day, and in a Slam of all events.

As concerns the Davis Cup tie, Raonic certainly has a chance to beat him if he serves as well as usual. That much is a fact. Pospisil won't get much of a chance though, unless Monfils is injured (possible, he was feeling the knees in Montpellier). Dancevic is unlikely to play singles, but if he put in a good performance he'd have a chance against Gael imo...serve-volleyers get under his skin.

Canada is a solid underdog against France, but the threat is there. Raonic is capable of winning one rubber (probably has to be against Monfils), and could run Tsonga close enough to get a chance for two wins. Canadian doubles pairing can threaten Benneteau and Llodra as well.
