Is Djokovic now fitter than Nadal?

Novak had a day off after his epic semi-final.
Rafa had two days after a routine job taking out TMF.
Everyone thought, if this match went to 5 sets, Nadal would win. It seemed that way too.

Then from nowhere, Novak fights his dizziness and comes out blazing and defeats 'the fittest player on the planet'.

When Nadal defeated Verdasco and Federer back to back, everyone hailed him. Why not show Novak the same respect now.

Novak is mentally and physically stronger than Nadal.

I still think Rafa's fitter. Nole is just a much better tennis player.

I think the fifth set was decided in the mental aspect. Nadal seemed fresher and really determined, I suppose those 6 loses in a row just came on top at some point in his mind and Djokovic took this match over.

Nole has bigger heart, balls and games than Rafa.

Mjau!

Nadal is on the defence more often and probably exerts even more energy.

At nearly six hours of play with so much tension, their heads must be dizzy but Novak endured better than Nadal; he was not spent the way many predicted might happen. i'm actually stunned he took the title.

Cap it off with the irony of Nadal's prematch comment over Djokovic. :lol:

As much as I dislike Nadal, there is no one fitter than him and his fat ass. Not even Nole.

Poll results :stupid: Come on guys.
Probably a joke votes as answer to a joke thread.

Nadal is light years in front of Djoker what fitness in concerned. Djoker collapsed today at 3-4 in the final set and looks half dead many times on court while Nadal just takes a deep breath and he is OK. :)
Not to mention the amount of retirements he had...he is fitter now, but still not as fit as Rafzilla and noone on tour is.

This. The Djoker makes Nadal run more than Nadal makes the Djoker run. In the end the running becomes too much for Nadal because unlike Federer the Djoker rarely misses or mishits simple shots.

I think the point is when Djokovic looks dead on his feet, he does play worse. It's not just a ruse. He let Nadal back into the match today because he made errors that he wasn't making earlier. Sure, he recovered, but so did Murray in the last match - and people attacked Murray for his lack of fitness, there.

Nadal maintained the same intensity throughout, and even upped his intensity as the match got longer. That's what gave him an edge.

I think we've yet to see Nadal really pushed to his limits in a GS.

Rafa definitely was the fitter player for sure, Nole was jus dead as it can be but like Noleta said, it all came to mental

True, besides Rafa's FH, Nole does everything else better than Rafa.

FH = Huge advantage Rafa

BH = Huge advantage Nole

Defense = Advantage Nole

Serve = Huge advantage Nole

2011 US open last set? Nadal had the momentum, but totally ran out of gas.

didn't see Nadal dropping his intensity or running any slower near the end. Thought is retrieving was actually the best in set 4 and 5. He was completely pumped at the end of the fourth, not tired.

No I don't think he is fitter than Nadal. He is very close, but I think what got him through his last two matches was due to his confidence and mental strength to pull through when he needed to. Very impressive stuff.

I still think Rafa's fitter. Nole is just a much better tennis player.

Until last year Rafa was fitter, now I would say that Nole is the fittest player in the ATP tour.

Nadal is fitter. Nole wins through a variety of things- consistent depth, unshakable confidence, a vastly better backhand, crisp returns, superhuman flexibility, secret candies and mind games. But Nadal never seems out of breath and is definitely fitter.

Yeah I agree.

First Federer chokes against him, then Nadal, when both of these guys have a serve to take advantage.

I think despite Nole's range, Rafa is a better volleyer.
You are also missing return, huge advantage Nole. Even when Nole was spraying shots early on, his returns were crisp and deep and put more pressure on Nadal's serve.

Both went that extra mile in set 5, Rafa retrieving unbelievably and Nole allowing himself to hit with less margin for error so he can hit near lines rather than offering all these lame central-ish dtl and cc shot attempts. Nole really ended up taking this match from Nadal in the end, it was incredible...

Worse forehand, very slightly worse defense I think. His serve is maybe marginally better but hard to say.

I had a feeling that Nadal was feeling fresher and cooler in the final set. Novak was really giving his deepest strength. Whatever, they are both physically superior.

01-29-2012, 09:25 PM
There was a physical momentum switch (cant simply say "momentum switch" anymore lol) at around 4-4 in the 5th, Nadal was the one missing because of adjustment...and he had 24h more rest, Djokovic is clearly fitter to me.

Still think Ferrer is the fittest guy on tour though.

Nope, deep in that 5th set Djokovic had run more km's than Nadal.

While Djokovic's forehand may be a bit less devastating, it's also less attack-able and can handle and redirect pace better. If his defense is worse, we're talking by the absolute smallest of margins, perhaps better on HC, less on grass/clay. Djokovic's serve is clearly better to me because it breaks down less and he's much less prone to just spinning it in and allowing his opponent to start neutral -- which is fine for Nadal when he outplays 99% of his opponents from the baseline -- not fine if he's playing Djokovic -- he needs to start ahead.

Nadal clearly the better volleyer.

Does it matter, even tired Djokovic beats fresher Nadal, Nadal proved he doesnt have the brain to beat Djokovic, he never attacked, only waited for errors, that was very pussy display from him. Im disapointed, but will continue to support Rafa ofcourse, lets hope he learns how to attack.

Nadal's got a better smash. In common with everybody else in the Top 100.

Don't know who's fitter but Nadal conceals his tiredness better.

01-29-2012, 09:52 PM
They're both as fit as it gets. You could have made that comparison in case one faltered due to fatigue in the end, but they were both running from one end of the court to the other till the end of the match, so we don't know their actual limit.
And of course it depends on the way they play as well, Nadal ran twice as much as Nole as he was the one doing most of the defending.

No he is not, his fitness improoved by big margin and he is i think up there top 5 if not top 3, Nadal is still fitter guy, Novak recovered after that SF, but he looked dead tired and Nadal seems to be tired - i mean really only in last moments of match and he was running a lot more, constantly in defense Novak was moving him lef-right, left-righ all the time. And i think Ferrer is extremely fit too-i mean his stamina is amazing, even Murray mentioned him i think in one interview that you don´t wanna play him during very hot day, becaue he will wear you down.
