Can Grigor cause an upset?

In their first round matches Dimitrov defeated Chardy in five sets and Almagro defeated Kubot in four sets.

Almagro will take this in 4 is the safe way to go. Grigor has still yet to prove to anyone that he can sustain decent form for more than one match at a slam. Almagro plays rather well in Australia as the surface suits him more than at least US Open/Wimbledon.

Certainly would love to be proven wrong by Grigor, however.

I second that! C
an't expect it to be easy, though, Almagro has been playing well at the AO in the last 2 years... and he stays the course, he can take 5 sets. He was like a persistent pest against Igor Andreev last year and Igor just couldn't shake him, so he lost in the end.

well I don't know really...
Grigor played some 5 sets and he wasn't very well too, call a trainer and had a tape on the left thigh.
Almagro isn't someone you can underestimate, no matter how much MTForumers hate him.

As much as I like both, to be honest I'd prefer Grisha to win this. Nicolas on non-clay is nothing special, I'm sure Dimitrov could go deeper here than him. Plus I enjoy his original tennis more, so...

Grigor in 3 :yeah:

He may not be a great HC player, but Almagro reached the 4th round in Australia for the last two years, that is nothing to laugh at. The 4th round is still the second week of the event. The surface suits him as it plays at a good pace for him to line his shots up. This is a tall task for Grigor as this would be the first time for him to reach the 3rd round. Really don't see it happening against Almagro.

Grigor certainly CAN pull the upset off, and I would love to be proven wrong, but every time he has looked like he would step up, he has faltered.

Only Fish and Baghdatis recently was upset. Almagro has good results in AO, he's not that bad, but Grigor is very motivated after Hopman Cup.

almagro may be over ranked but he is no mug. He's one of those players on this forum that gets a ton of hate and is constantly underestimated for reasons i have yet to understand.

he's made the 2nd week here twice before so its not like he cant play well here plus you cant oerlook the experience and the fact that grigor has yet to prove he can string 2 good matches in a row together.

he did it at the hopman cup but its pretty clear that doesnt mean a whole hell of alot. if it did mardy fish and bethanie mattek-sands would have been pasted by muller and radwanska

Tough one to forecast, really hard.

I have a hard time to read in Grigor's last match. Was it him back to normal, mediocre (for his potential) display with a hint of improved physical condition and clutch, or was it him prevailing on a mega dark horse of his, who knows his game as well as Grigor's father does?

In the latter scenario, considering the fieworks against Fish in Perth, i would consider Grigor winning this one eventually.

But it's still a bit of wishful thinking here.

Go Grisho anyway :)

I hope we see the vs-top10ers Grigor Dimitrov not the demotivated, I-can't-be-bothered-to-play-against-mugs (who are ranked higher than me, mind you) version. I may despise Tomic's cockiness but at least he gets the job done and at 1.5 years Dimitrov's juniors his results are way more impressive even disregarding the fact Dimitrov has a lot of weapons and it may take him time to get his game together (much like the superior version Federer).

Dimitrov seems to love a challenge but if he wants some more of these he needs to step up his game and take out Almagro. I have always liked the power Almagro can generate but hated his face so I hope Grigor can pull out a win only just so another Nadal groupie is out of the picture.

I don't know why people are downgrading Almagro so much in this one.
As much as I want Dimi to win, I don't really buy that argument the surface suits him better. That's not really the case.
This is a slow outdoor hard and Grigor would have done much better on faster courts like grass, US open or indoor hard. In fact I think it suits Almagro better - it is not accidentally he reached the R4 here
And looking at their R1 matches Almagro has surely done better than Grigor. Moreover there is an info here that Grigor suffers pain in his knees. Not sure how reliable it is, but if so - than playing a 5 setter previously and facing a much experienced top 10 seeded player eager to defend his points with pain in your body doesn't really speaks about a possible upset...
I see most of you hate Almagro and that's more of a wishful vote.

This match could show if this Dimitrov is a real deal or not. Has a chance to make an upset against Mugro on HC. :)

So much hype and talk about this guy, but I have never seen playing a whole match. I'm gonna watch this one closely and see what he has to offer.

Majority still expects Mugro to clinch it. Let's see if Dimi can surprise us.

Fed won his first title at Wimbledon with a potential injury which could have forced him to withdraw. People and especially players need to stop focusing on injuries and watch see who wins. If he's not fit to last 2 matches at a GS, he is not winning one any time soon.
