That was a nice match point to end it. Tomic looked dead late in the 3rd set, his legs wouldn't move. The announcers basically said that the match was over. Verdasco gave him a sliver of life and the kid found the energy. Props to him.

Bernard Tomic is officially The Magician 2.0!

Points of concern for Tomic:

- Predictable on forehand side when moved around, defaults all too readily to crosscourt.
- Serve needs to be improved
- Sometimes passive, however did hit not so many less winners than Verdasco in the match, who is a winners machine...

Bernard keep rolling.

Sometimes, defensive players use their variety of skills to force opponents into playing badly, hitting errors etc. Other times, they play people like Verdasco who hit the ball twenty feet out after the first shot and double fault on break point against mediocre returners. Verdasco is just the worst. And Tomic is almost as bad. Just awful all around

stunning show of form indeed despite the early slip, kinda get the feeling he is in the federer mould of not walking off court despite not being 100%... showing good traits early on...

but yeah, tomic showed real ownership of verdasco when he hit that bh dtl winner on the run in verdasco's 2nd last service game... he didn't go on to win that game, but the nod to verdasco at the end of that point was a public statement about who was running the show and what end the contest would have...

Tomic is cocky and arrogant but I'll be honest his game has grown on me. It isn't pretty, but it's crafty. He won't blow anyone off the court but you can tell he knows how to play the game. He's not just out there bashing the ball. I can respect that.

Mountaindewslave

incredible unforced error count in this match had me starting to wonder what the highest amount of recorded unforced errors ever was in a tennis match? it occurred to me it would probably end up being that isner/mahut marathon just on the basis of how many games they played but not on either playing at an incredibly low (Verdasco esqu) quality, spewing UE's from all over.

this match was fun! I wouldn't be surprised if it is one of the best of the tournament.

at moments the quality was great and at moment's low, but the reason this match was so awesome is the surprise factor.

the viewers, or at least me, and the commentators, seemed pretty certain Tomic was done after being 2 sets down. I was pretty certain. Tomic is not known for his physical shape! he looked like he was breathing a lot, slowed down. incredible that he came back, and this is exciting this Tomic. he is very good with his strange game and pace, and more so, with his great head on his shoulders.

definitely shocked Tomic came back and matches like this really let you know that anything is possible in tennis...

before today if someone told me that Tomic would be able to physically outlast Verdasco I would have laughed.... how things change

here's to Tomic and the rest of the tournament!! cheers!! go far! towards Verdasco, you poor poor headcase

Verdasco is a complete underachiever, just that plain and simple. He's got so much talent and potential, it's ridiculous, but the way he wastes it, makes a person just wanna kick him square in his ass over and over again. I feel sorry for all the people who support him, all the fans and sponsors, because he has disappointed them to no end, and clearly needs to stop playing tennis before he further embarrasses himself.

I don't understand all the negativity. I enjoyed the match and never did I think Tomic could win, esp after being down 2 sets to love. Tomic is a breath of fresh air for the tour - he plays the game differently to the plethora of topspin bashers and is unlike anyone else I have ever seen in the men's game in 40 years of following the sport. Remember is just a kid and still growing and learning. I hope he has a big future. He has the game to frustrate a lot of players and I love watching his slower flat shots. Reminds me a bit of a young Chris Evert and her baseline game with a wooden racket ... I love it :)

A more confident Verdasco would have had this in the bag. One wonders about his shot selection. It's totally atrocious at times. Sometimes gifts away a long rally by hitting a very stupid and bad dropshot. Sometimes gives away a 0-40 with 3 junior-like errors.

Verdasco is a mental headcase at the moment. Needs a new coach and needs to focus and calm down. Probably should take a page out of Soderling's book and put a towel over his head during breaks sometimes just to calm himself down and focus on his game and gameplan. He lost to himself just as much as he lost to Tomic

Tomic is such a funny guy. In his press conference he said his tactic that won him the match was to play lazy in the 3rd to give Verdasco false confidence that the match was already over, then he goes BAM and breaks serve and then takes the 3rd set.

Wow. Tomic really doesn't seem to think twice about giving away his tactics. I actually use that 'lazy play' gem to turn matches around myself.

I can't believe all the negative comments. Yes it wasn't pretty.
Im sure sme people don't have a brain though. A 5 set match. There was approximately 350 points played.
83 UF really doesn't seem alot against a player like Tomic. He doesn't have a huge amount of power to cause forced errors and he frustrates players with the variety of shots and completely different game to everyone else on tour.

Compare with Monaco vs Kohlscriber
297 points - 128UF
Tomic vs Verdasco
349 points - 143UF

How many of you ballbashers can honestly say you hit the same or less Unforced errors when playing against a wily player who mixes things up in hot weather. You lose concentration and untimately make more mistakes. Some yes, not many i would honestly think.

BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, you know, it's very hard in that position when you're down two sets to love and having three set points in that second set.

Tomic played incredibly in the last 2 sets. It was like everything he touched turned to magic in the 4th set especially.

Verdasco is just too tight on court. He's intense, stressed, babbling to his coach who is also babbling. I think he needs a calmer coaching staff that will not react to his freaking out on the court. He needs someone who will tell him to shut up and start focusing.

I'm surprised Nando win the first two sets, but of course he would choke. Unbeliveble since Tomic were crampling and at some point he stop care about the match. But Verdasco gave him hope. And then Tomic was unstopable.

B-Nard it's so mental GOAT that sometimes is scary. Even with stupid mistakes, he kept his cool. When he made awesome winners, he kept his cool as well. In the end of the match he didn't made that huge celebration. It seems like he doesn't even have a soul! Which is good for a tennis player in mental level. And is natural ablity for the game will make him a multiple slam winnerand the best player of his generation.

How many players with 19 years old could hold on to the pressure of an entire country on his shoulders, after losing the first 2 sets, in the biggest stage of them all? I'm so proud of you Bernie!!! Now onto the 3d round. Querrey is a walking bye! Just have a good rest Tomic!

stunning show of form indeed despite the early slip, kinda get the feeling he is in the federer mould of not walking off court despite not being 100%... showing good traits early on...

but yeah, tomic showed real ownership of verdasco when he hit that bh dtl winner on the run in verdasco's 2nd last service game... he didn't go on to win that game, but the nod to verdasco at the end of that point was a public statement about who was running the show and what end the contest would have...

Tomic played badly for the first 4 sets. How does it make sense you can do that and still beat a seeded player. Well I suppose 81 UE helps...

I can't believe Tomic not only used such cheap gamesmanship but he proudly admitted it. Of course it worked on Verdasco who's got to be the most mentally weak player ever.

Tomic deserves all the flack he gets and on the other hand so does Nando.

I'm not gay, nor do I worship the overhyped bandwagon, so nah. Kthxbye.
Sure dude. Whatever you say. :)

Cry me a river. So many whiny bitches. Is that really all it takes to get the period pains going?

If I could beat players at tennis professionally by pretending to be tired, then I'd do it in a heartbeat. If Tomic really wanted to keep it up his sleeve as a tactic though, he wouldn't have said anything. He can't really go out and do it in his next match now can he, given he's revealed his secret to all and sundry!

In other words if people are actually stupid enough to believe he went into the match or even that set thinking about using tiredness as a way of winning, then posters on this forum are more retarded than I thought. Kid clearly didn't expect to win, but got given a reprieve by the opposition. Then cracks a joke about it in his presser. Now untwist those panties ladies.

^ Trust me I'm more mad at Verdasco. I don't really watch enough Tomic matches or pay enough attention to him to be a real hater.

Q. Was there any time in the match when his body language showed you something that you focused on?

BERNARD TOMIC: Um, yeah, in the third set. He thought I had a feeling he knew I was going to go away. I eased off, as well, I think on purpose. I eased off and seemed I didn't care, and I think that's what drawed him a little bit tonight. He thought he was going to win that third set, and when the right time came, I broke him.

You know, after that the third set, you know, he started getting a little bit tight and not hitting his shots.

Q. So you set him up a little bit?

BERNARD TOMIC: In that third set, yeah. I knew if I lifted my game early, he would have lifted as well and he wouldn't have let go. I pretended a little bit in the first few games in that third set to not be there as mentally, but in a way to still be there.

Just :worship::worship::worship:

Wow!!

There really are some haters here! Using a misquote that doesn't even make sense when misquoted to try and damage players.

This is enough to make me support players against the hate.

It was a good win for Tomic and it's always nice to see a young player fight back fro defeat but he has a habit of saying the stupidest things sometimes:

Q. It was an extraordinary match, so many ups and downs. The way eventually you took it was like a very mature player.

BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, you know, it's very hard in that position when you're down two sets to love and having three set points in that second set.

If it was someone else, I think they would have thrown in the towel. I don't know how I found the energy today. I knew I could've beaten him. I knew had so many chances to win the first and second.

Really Bernard? Are you the first player to come back from 2 sets down?

And how does 'if it was someone else' make sense? Not Verdasco? no....of courxe if you actually LISTEN he says 'if it was someWHERE else'

He was trying to thank the crowd, misquoting people. Sigh!
