The 2012 BNP Paribas Open Pre-Qualifying tournament begins today, Monday, February 27, and will run through Saturday, March 3. From fast-rising young stars to talented local players, the pre-qualifying draw features more than 145 competitors (90 men and 59 women) playing to earn a wildcard into the BNP Paribas Open qualifying tournament, to be held March 5-7 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula highlight the young American talent in the women’s draw. Keys, a 17-year-old from Rock Island, IL advanced to the second round of the 2011 US Open where she took a set off of the No. 27 seed, Lucie Safarova, Pegula, the 18-year-old from Buffalo, NY finished last year at a career-high ranking of No. 288 and made waves in the 2011 US Open doubles draw by reaching the round of 16 with partner Taylor Townsend.
Olga Savchuk of Ukraine has been on the WTA tour since 2004 and reached a career-high ranking of No. 79 in 2008. In her first Grand Slam appearance at the 2006 Australian Open, Savchuk went through qualifying and reached the third round after defeating No. 23-seeded Jelena Jankovic.
American Tetiana Luzhanska is the highest-ranked woman in the field at No. 134. Other notable women include former USC standouts Amanda Fink, the 2009 Pac-10 Champion, and Maria Sanchez, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in 2011.
On the men’s side, former top Fresno State player Rudolf Siwy headlines the draw that includes local College of the Desert players Joshua Banks, Parker Kelley and Senne Braun; the No. 3-ranked high school senior in the nation Kristofer Yee who is on his way to Vanderbilt University in the fall; and local veterans Andy Scorteanu, Marcin Rozpedski and more.
In 2011, Daniel Kosakowski and Krista Hardebeck won the pre-qualifying tournament and have since both reached career-high rankings.
Matches will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, February 27 and Tuesday, February 28: 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 29 and Thursday, March 1; and 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2. The women’s final will be on Saturday, March 3 at Noon followed by the men’s final. All matches will be played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and open to the public and free of charge.
