The 2012 BNP Paribas Open Pre-Qualifying tournament begins today, Monday, February 27, and will run through Saturday, March 3. From fast-rising young stars to talented local players, the pre-qualifying draw features more than 145 competitors (90 men and 59 women) playing to earn a wildcard into the BNP Paribas Open qualifying tournament, to be held March 5-7 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula highlight the young American talent in the women’s draw. Olga Savchuk of Ukraine has been on the WTA tour since 2004 and reached a career-high ranking of No. 79 in 2008. In her first Grand Slam appearance at the 2006 Australian Open, Savchuk went through qualifying and reached the third round after defeating No. 23-seeded Jelena Jankovic.

American Tetiana Luzhanska is the highest-ranked woman in the field at No. 134. Other notable women include former USC standouts Amanda Fink, the 2009 Pac-10 Champion, and Maria Sanchez, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in 2011.

On the men’s side, former top Fresno State player Rudolf Siwy headlines the draw that includes local College of the Desert players Joshua Banks, Parker Kelley and Senne Braun; the No. 3-ranked high school senior in the nation Kristofer Yee who is on his way to Vanderbilt University in the fall; and local veterans Andy Scorteanu, Marcin Rozpedski and more.
