1st round match: Fed on Rod Laver Arena and Nadal on Hisense?

Is it fair to Nadal as a higher ranked player? Or is it about ticket sales (Fed attracts more people)? It was also a night match for Fed. I was surprised Rafa fans are not whining yet.

Well Rafa by his current level is below the level of Monfils so I'm happy he got to even play on Hisense

Yay, question (whether intentional or not) to introduce Nadal-bashing. This thread can only go one direction.

Fed is a bigger draw, a four time champion and won AO more recently than Rafa.

One assumes it may be because Australian fans would prefer to watch more attractive tennis than that offered by Nadal.

Both Rod Laver and Hisense arenas have same surface so it's quite the same which court they are playing. Rod Laver Arena has more seats and Roger attracts more spectators, so AO organizers are wise and have Roger at Rod Laver Arena. Despite higher ranking, Rafa doesn't attract spectators as much so he'll play at Hisense. More important question than why Rafa plays at Hisense is why Roger attracts spectators more?

one or the other had to play in the position they did so..... Federer is probably the greatest of all time! so I understand why they kept him at night on Rod Laver. Federer is also famous for his night time matches so it would not make a whole lot of sense to put Nadal there.

let's be realistic though, both Federer and Nadal are massively popular and it would be very tough to gauge which the crowd prefers to see or is more popular. Federer is the best player ever seen and Nadal is one of the most interesting competitors the sport has seen. both have about 9 million fans on facebook...

the court placement has nothing to do with demeaning Nadal or favoring Federer. if anything all it shows is they really really love their own, i.e. Tomic.

nadal's style is foreign to the australian mentality and therefore forgotten very easily... no amount of sugar coating that fact can change the truth... for every tear fed let roll in 2009, there were a million more from the australian fans who witnessed a significant death in the game and in severe pity at the sight of a grown man crying...

Considering these two guys play now on same days,at some point both guys will play on another court then RLA.Nadal will play in R1 match on Hisense and probably Federer will go there in R2.
If the organisers schedule only 2 men`s matches/day on the center court it will be impossible to see both Federer and Nadal there all the time.
With Tomic and other guys who might get a center court match either Nadal or Federer will have to go to the other court.

Nadal is very popular, but Fed is way, way more popular.

Yep exactly.
I think it being the first day of the tournament, the organisers will obviously lean towards Roger in RLA. He is more popular, especially in Australia (not to say Nadal isnt popular, but Fed's popularity beats basically every other player's). Fed is only one ranking place below Nadal (who isnt Number 1 anyway!), but has won 4 titles to Rafa's 1. He is possibly the best AO player in the Open era. And anyway, he prefers night matches and Rafa likes day matches. And they HAD to put Tomic in RLA so makes sense why Rafa is in Hisense. Its not an insult. Both guy being on the same half of the draw will have to play a couple of the times on the second show court.

Federer is currently more popular. I guess he is more glamorous. Has he ever played on hisense? Tomic vs Verdasco is the one i'm surprised about. Really thought that was going to be the night match. I have front seats tomorrow night and was looking forward to watching that. I have already seen Roger play live about a billion times. It was really between Roger and Rafa the whole time and will be for the rest of the first week, depending on how Roger does. Luckily i also have front row hisense tickets that i got first day of sales so looks like a will be seeing both Roger and Rafa. Murray vs Harrison will be the night match on tuesday so i guess Novak will be on hisense to accommodate hewitt.

The schedule looks incredibly weak tomorrow especially compared to previous years. There are no names outside of the show courts. Even on the show-courts, guys last Wawrinka got in and Berdych got on MCA against a no name. Guess that is what happens when guys like soderling/blake/gonzo and cilic withdraw. All those names normally take up places on the show-courts.

The top half looks much stronger than the bottom half in terms of star power outside of the top 4.

nevermind the ranking or number of GS won, the fact is that federer isn't a moonballer and that fact alone should put him ahead of nadal.

sames goes for all the other players who don't moonball.

Hewitt isn't going on hisense. No chance. Especially with this being possibly is last AO. Here in melbourne he is just, if not more popular than Novak. Novak will be back on Rod laver on thursday. Murray on hisense. I guess Novak will play a night match vs Raonic in round 4
