Did Djokovic just provoke Federer?

Excerpt from today's Novak interview:

Q. At the end of last year, obviously the best player was Federer. Is it a concern for you that he was the best at that time?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Of 2011?

Q. Yes.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, he finished off the season best from all the other players. He had over 15 wins in a row. He definitely loves playing indoors. He loves playing in the London event. But, you know, it's a whole new year. It's a whole new season. We're starting to play outdoors. We'll see if everybody can keep up.

To me it sounds smth. like: let's see if the old man can still keep up with us...

It is very correct but not very polite.
Make no mistake, I dont have any problem with that. You dont need to go out of your way and be "nice" to your competitors. "Nice" gets you nowhere.
As someone said above, Federer has often made statements like that. And its very true too. What goes around, comes around

I am sure Federer accepts Novak is the man to beat too. And its a new season and everyone will have reset.
But yes, while Djokovic did say "everyone", I am sure he was basically thinking about Federer foremost. Two reasons. Fed is the man who finished last season with a flourish and supposed to be the top 4 member in the best form and two, Fed is the guy Djokovic will have even slight reservations when facing.

He just said the truth. I don´t know why everyone is thinking how good form Roger had in indoor 2011. In that time when Roger won Basel, Paris and London, Nole was burned out, Nadal too, Murray injured. His toughest competiton was Tsonga-who challenged him every time he had chance. Also Roger won those matches indoors where he is simply better than outdoors. Now started 2012, everyone is healthy and AO will be played outdoors, in heat and best of 5. So the question is can old man keep up? I like Roger but, seriously i can´t imagine him win say SF with RAfa in 5 sets and than take down Nole in F in slow HC in heat, Roger stated AO is very slow, even slower than last year...

MTF hangs at every single word from the top 4, hoping that they will say something to initiate a flamewar here on the boards.

The fact is, hardly anything of what the pros say are actually prepared and thought-through statements (unless it's a presser they called for themselves). So, to analyze EVERY word like this seems utterly pointless to me. The pros are doing their best to answer questions somewhat properly. But they are still just people like the rest of us and can therefore say things sometimes that sound dubious without even noticing that themselves.

TC is trying to lead the debate in his favour with the emphasised part of the interview (emboldened by him, of course), which therefore renders both interview and quote redundant. We all know that Djokovic is provocative both in his pre and post-match press briefings and also with his apish victory celebrations. Dead thread.

It is not surface, It is a problem of age. Since Roger has won the victory in all the surface. An outdoor hard court MS or GS. Grass. Clay. Indoor, etc.
And paris MS 1000. This is MS in which Roger Federer 1st won the victory after he became 30 years old. Surface is not a reason. But I like Novak. Although his family has a problem. Novak Djokovic, also win the victory this year in RG. good luck.

This is so true and so overlooked.

I read pretty much all of Fed's interviews and he literally answers the exact same question in 5 different ways throughout a tournament. And that's just in English!

As far as I'm concerned 75% of what he says is completely unreliable. The same applies to all of the pros. This is true of post-match press conferences far more so than newspaper interviews etc in my experience.

Honestly maybe 1 question in the entire post-match interview will have a genuine answer. The rest will just be the first random crap that comes to mind. But trust MTF to analyse the transcripts like they were carefully prepared speeches.

Emotional Competency Distortions (http://www.emotionalcompetency.com/distortions.htm)
"You conclude, incorrectly and without considering other alternatives or testing your assumptions, that you understand how another person is thinking and what their reasons and motives are for taking a particular action. This is an example of the Fundamental Attribution Error where you incorrectly attribute an action or intent to an agent. One example of this is drawing a negative conclusion in the absence of supporting information. Focusing only on evidence that supports a negative position, while neglecting to consider alternative positive explanations is the fallacy of not considering representative evidence."

The best player after the US Open was Andy, until he hurt his groin. The only reason federer won those events is b/c of that and Novak cleary nowhere near his best. We all know this, and so does Novak. If he plays Federer it will be like last year, but worse. Its not suprising the old man taking advantages of the best players injuries, thats his speciality.

I will answer it with another question: whose body should be cracking up at the end of the season?! A guy in his 30's that had about 4 seasons on a row like Novak had last year?! Or a 24 years old in the prime of his physical abilities that had ONE really succesful season?!

FYI: in 2005 Federer was on crutches weeks before the Masters Cup. And he still managed to reach finals and lost in an epic 5 setters. In 2004, his first "3GS year", he missed the entire indoors season after getting injured at Basel. And still won the Masters Cup.

.
Yes he was the man, but there was a reason that federer at 30 past his prime could do that. You can discount the reason if you want.

On the fact that Andy got injured after "fluking" three wins, including a master series. Well atleast according to Federer b/c the only reason he won those events is b/c Rafa was not in form and Novak did not play. That clown did say that before London for whatever reason.

The fact that Novak broke down after having the greatest single year since laver, is not suprising. It took alot out of him beating murray, federer, and Rafa so many times. Federer in his prime did have to deal with players like, his main rival off clay, was Roddick. Its understandable Novak was spent. The question is will it affect him this year.

So you admit that Roger is past his prime. In other words, Djokovic didn't win 3 GS titles while Roger was on top form. And since you think that Murray "fluked" 3 wins, you might not see him as the greatest contender out there. Which leaves, lets say, only Nadal-a guy that some might say, is not exactly also at the top of his powers. Thanks. Despite not having a thing against Novak, you made my day! :D

Novak was 18,19 when Federer was in his prime, and I know Murray did not "fluke" anything. That is just what Federer said before London in explaining why Murray was so succesful after NY. Saying it was the lack of competition, and lack of form from the higher ranked players.

Thanks. Despite not having a thing against Novak, you made my day! :D
