Good to see the English #1 qualifying for a grand slam for the first time. Last year we all remember him for making a surprise ATP semi-final at Queen's (d. by Tsonga) but he has never really shown his best tennis outside of the UK. Perhaps this is an important stepping stone for him?
Plays Kavcic in the first round proper :D

Great win, thought Sijsling would just edge this one but Ward dominated the stats and made it count, impressive.
Has a decent shot at beating Kavcic, who might still be carrying an injury.

Good chance to gain some vital points here. I'd definately pick James over Kavcic right now.

Nice win. He definitely has a chance against Kavcic. In fact, I think he has more than a chance against him.

Great job Wardy. :yeah:
He wasn't in a pleasant section of the qualifying draw (had Andreev as potential Q3), and did well to survive the two previous rounds. Good effort to make use of his seeding, and his priority going forward should be to cement a top 150 position, and ensure seeding opportunities in future large qualifying draws (IW and Miami next). He has another 6 months before he needs to defend huge points at Queen's and the two US summer challengers, so he needs to be pushing hard now.
Drawing Kavcic in R1 is a good opportunity, as others suggest, and he could do with winning 70pts rather than 35pts. The pay cheque wouldn't be bad either.

james is a good guy and deserves success. he has got a nice 1st round draw. he is different in tat he plays very flat on his shots compared to most male players.
i will forever love him for calling out ted 'worst umpire ever' watts at nottingham when i was in the crowd. :inlove:

Brilliant result for Ward here... and i'll be the first to admit that I didn't expect him to get through qualifying. It's a great start to 2012 for GB as we've got 6 players in singles main draws of the first grand slam, all of whom have earned their place in the draw. Hopefully we're moving forward, and with the youngsters we have coming through I feel pretty optimistic about the future of British tennis :)

Good man James! Good luck in R1, would be a huge win for him if he can pull it off.

Good effort, and that's a very kind main draw placement as a reward. Hope he can make the most of it.

Kavcic is very winnable.

Glad to see him qualify ! Last year he did virtually nothing till June so making the Aussie open is brill! Interesting to see how he does against Kavcic! This Is Slam Tennis thought! Needing 3 Sets! It,s a pain that the BBC coverage is crappy to say the least!
