WWW Sydney final: Benneteau vs. Nieminen?

Can Benneteau finally win a singles title? Will Nieminen win his second title? Benneteau is 0-5 in finals, while Nieminen is 1-10

Jarkko leads Julien in the h2h 4-0.

Very close. But both players must feel the pressure, since they must know that this is one of the last opportunities to improve their finals statistics. And this time it's not a top 20 player across the net.

Hard to say. Hopefully Nieminen but I don't mind if Benneteau wins something finally. :)

Which match will be first, doubles' or singles' final? If doubles' final is first, I wonder how it affects to Jarkko's singles' final performance.

Edit: Men's final starts at 7:30pm just lake women's final, doesn't it? But estimated finish time is an hour earlier at 9:30pm and centre court matches start already at 4:30pm. So does that mean doubles' final is first?

Strange to have two finals mugs in a final. Could well be a 3 hour+ mugathon, but despite everything else, I am guessing Sharkko in tight 3.

I've now checked that, singles' final is first.

Anyway, both Nieminen and Benneteau have bad final records and Nieminen has seemed to play nervously in finals. But what have Benneteau's finals been like? Has he lost them becouse the other was just better or has he been nervous in finals?

Julien will likely win if Jarkko will continue serving as weak as today, just not getting enough "free" points to take title.

Unless he chokes badly when serving out the match, which is always a possibility, this should be Benneteau´s maiden title, me thinks

Recently lost in the final in my hometown of Winston-Salem. Was outplayed in 3 sets by Isner after winning the first. Was in tears afterward. He will be very motivated, for sure.

Benneteau also lost to the frenchies Llodra (Marseille -they won the doubles together right after their singles final) and Simon in straights. Both opponents were in-form when he played them.

Seriously, their "bad" finals record is kinda misleading. They have had very tough opponents in their finals. In fact, this is probably the easiest final for both of them!

Recently lost in the final in my hometown of Winston-Salem. Was outplayed in 3 sets by Isner after winning the first. Was in tears afterward. He will be very motivated, for sure.

But can he handle the motivation the right way? If he's afraid of losing, then he's already lost. But if he just thinks about winning, at the best he dares to play as usually and he wants to fight for every point. But at the worst he may have too much motivation leading to stupid playing.

All I want is "may the best man win". Of course as a Finn, I'd hope Jarkko to win, now we can say he was lucky he won at least one title, his nerves don't hold. But if he won another, we could say he had bad luck in having so tough opponents in finals, he could've won more. But I'd hope no multiple finalist never winning a final, the same words I said about jarkko apply to Julien, too. So, whichever player wins, I'll be happy for him. And, I'll be a bit sad for the one who'll lose.

Hensafmurrafter
01-13-2012, 04:32 PM
I don't think it was nerved that did him in. Benneteau will be solid and should also have the energy, but the match is still a toss up.

MuzzahLovah
01-13-2012, 04:37 PM
I like Niemo, but it's time Julien got that title. He's performed not only well, but efficiently, dispatching Marcos in straights, so he hopefully has energy left for the final.

it's hard not to feel bad when looking at either players w/l record in finals... it probably really sucks for them, having been so close so many times. at least Jarko won some but poor Benneteau. this is his time to step it up! would be a shame if a player of his caliber ended a career with no titles

Julien deserves at least 1 title in his career, for both guys this could be their last final in singles, they won´t play finals at bigger events for sure, so at some 250 maybe in future, but it is not sure.

I don´t know why everyone is pointing out on their records in finals, they are not top players, in form they are decent top 50, that´s it, 250 final is what they can hope for, nothing more, just look on their final opponents. This is probably the easist final for them both.

Benneatou finals:
Casalbanca-clay - Simon 2008 - he wasn´t favorit for sure, Simon on clay can play super long rallies
Lyon-carpet-indoor - Soderling 2008 - Robin indoor on carpet with his serve, tough opponent
Kitzbuhel-clay-2009 - Garcia-Lopez- playing on clay against typical spanish clay-courter no wonder he didn´t win
Marseille 2010 - indoor HC - Llodra- this was difficult also, because they are friends and Llodra in form indoors is very very tough
Winston-Salem 2011 - HC- Isner, US players are always great at US HC, Isner was favorit

Benneteau is this time i think 1st time favorit in final-just little but is favored by odds. From his 5 losses he 2x won first set and lost, always played touhg player.

Don´t want now to write all Jarkko´s matches, but generally the same always played someone better-higher ranked in finals on small events- lost 2xRoger,2xNalbandian, Monfils, LLodra again no easy opponents in final.

Wow, h2h is heavily in Niemo's favour and they played 3 matches on hard, Niemo won all 3. Even though Benny's stats vs. Left Handers is 19/20 he apparently has problems handling Niemo.
I would expect a win for the Finn but his serve is so weak it may let him down.

Nah, they're bad. For instance, Garcia-Lopez and Llodra are hardly nightmare-ish final opponents. In the case of Nieminen you have to excuse him for losing to Federer a couple of times but that's it. 1-10 is ridiculous for a player of his calibre.

I think Benneteau will win. He has been on fire this week.

I watched the Nieminen Istomin game and thought Istomin had control in the second half of the first set and coughed up an epic tb, which was the back breaker for him. Istomin really went to town on Neiminen's serve, I think he even got the break back after Neiminen was 40-0 up. The court hours for Neiminen has to be a slight issue as well.

I'd love for Benneteau to finally get a title and his game has been on this week, but if his SF choking is any indication, Nieminen might get over the line.

Nonsense. Nieminen has almost always faced top calibre opponents and I think only once or so has been higher ranked in the final. Ditto for Benneteau.

You may want to compare to someone like Tursunov who is 7-2 on ATP finals, but his opponents have mostly been clowns.

Both of them are like clown Monfils, unlucky in finals...but I think Nieminen will win, in 2009 Nalby had some troubles to beat him in final, he's a very tough opponent who never gives up, he's mentally much stronger than Bennet. If Nieminen wins, he could pull out of AO 'cause his 1rst match is scheduled on Monday (night session) ???? It's only a possibility of course, he can decide to play AO

Of course TV bradcasters aren't now happy, but that is easy to say afterwards. If they had started earlier than planned and there hadn't been that rain, broadcasters would've been angry. So, in that sense starting earlier was no option. But considering the risk of match being moved to the following day and AO starting Monday, it'd be wiser to have the finals earlier meaning less risk for final date change.

They could have just rerun the match from early that day:o Instead they had to play a rerun of some other match or show some rain delay montage, so it probably would have made them happier if the final was played on the correct day.

They don't have weather forecasts in Australia? It seems obvious if there is rain on the forecast on the final day of your open air tournament, you want to get your matches on early before the rain washes things out.

The ranking of the opponent shouldn't matter much when it wasn't a problem for these guys in the matches they won to get to these finals.

No matter what you say there's no excuse for Nieminen with a sample of 11 matches - the only guy he managed to beat was Ancic who was a clown in finals himself - losing to the likes of Arthurs, Moodie and Dupuis.
