I hope Action Jackson won't mind it if I'm going to run this poll this year again.

You have to name at least 5 players or votes won’t count.

It would be much appreciated if you would include reasons for your decisions but it’s not a requirement

Of course you can only vote once for the same player.

Please make sure before you are going to vote if you have already mentioned your players before.

It's easy to check if you have already posted in a thread. Just click on "search this thread", advanced search and write down your name under "search by user name".

Here is how the points will be distributed:

#1 = 10
#2 = 9
#3 = 8
#4 = 7
#5 = 6
#6 = 5
#7= 4
#8= 3
#9 = 2
#10= 1

Hopefully many people will participate :)

3. Santoro - tennis genius

9. Lendl - as Snoop Dogg once said, "Ivan was the truth"
10. Sampras - I used to like him so much and then his post-retirement years revealed a real ornery, unpleasant guy

2. Pat Rafter (such a classy and great guy on and off the court, nothing to hate about him, still bummed to this day that he never won Wimbledon )
3. Marat Safin (such a shame he only won 2 grand slams, but that 2005 AO SF against Roger :worship:)
4. Michael Chang (always supporting the Asians, and he won his only grand slam at the age of 17)
5. Jim Courier (found his style of play quite interesting)
6. John McEnroe (You can't be serious man!!! :yeah:)

The list only includes the results of the votes until post #25 and Sargsian hasn't been mentioned in them.

You will find him and his points in the second update :)

Sorry Chilenaitor, you already voted in the favorite active players thread and gave 10 points to Fernando there.

I added all the points from Fernando from that thread into this one which would mean you would give points twice to him.

Therefore you have to edit your list. Thanks in advance :)

1) Gustavo Kuerten

A wonderful, charismatic player with a special connection to the audience.
Loved to see him play so much and really regret it that I didn't went to tournaments earlier to see him play live.
It's such a shame that Guga's career was overshadowed by his hip problems.

The next 3 players I like equally and therefore I had to draw their ranking by lot:

2) Stefan Edberg

I really enjoyed it that I got to see him playing live this year in Halle for the first time (especially in company of a huge Edberg fan who was so happy that his dream came true to see his idol :) )

Unforgettable rivalry especially with Boris Becker.

3) Michael Stich

Also got to see him for the first time playing live this year in Halle in a showmatch against Edberg.

Brilliant player – Pete Sampras once said he would be the player with the best game when he had a good day - who could have achieved more when he would have been more amibitious, was unfortunately never really respected in Germany.
What an irony that even on the day of his biggest triumph it was all about Becker even on the court when the umpire said "Game, Set and Match Becker"...

A shame that he had to retire so early...

4) Patrick Rafter

The best player who never got to win Wimbledon.

I would have so loved to see him winning in Wimbledon one day, but who will ever forget his match against Goran? What an atmosphere there was on that day :worship:

I would have loved to see Pat around longer.

5) Boris Becker

Where would have tennis been in Germany without him?

I remember his first triumph in Wimbledon, the yellow Boris T-Shirt I had...
I don't really like him that much now, but will never forget how he has really been responsible for awaking my interest in tennis.

6) Fernando Gonzalez

I'm glad I got to see him play live once in Basel.
He was such a pleasure to watch when his game was on.

It's sad that the last stage in his career had been overshadowed by injury problems and forced him to retire.

7) Pete Sampras

I didn't really liked him for beating my favourite players back then all the time, but I always had huge respect for his achievements, even more when I witnessed Roger trying to equal and surpass Pete's records.

8) Magnus Norman

Unfortunately he had to retire quite early due to health problems.

I especially remember his final against Guga in Roland Garros which nearly cost me all my fingernails

9) Andre Agassi

I was never a fan of him during his "rebel" years, but I really respected him for his comeback after his fall in the rankings.
He dropped a bit in my favourite ranking after having read his autobiography and witnessing his behaviour in the Haiti charity event.

10) Michael Westphal

Unforgettable for his DC match against Tomas Smid.
It's a tragedy that he died so young.
I will never forget how sad I was when I heard the news on TV

Honorable mention to Andy Roddick, Mats Wilander, Magnus Gustafsson, David Wheaton, Cedric Pioline and Alex Corretja :)

Doris, I vaguely remember having posted before in this thread, but after your kind invitation I couldn't resist perhaps posting again. :D There might well be some changes since the former time I posted, there are just too many great players of whom I have fond memories. :)

Okay, here goes:

1. Arthur Ashe - my first memory of watching tennis on the telly, as a wee kiddie. Great player, and an even greater humanitarian. Didn't deserve his dreadful untimely death at all.

2. Stefan Edberg -the ultimate S/V player and a genuine gentleman.

3. Jimmy Connors - my favourite 'bad guy'. Interchangeable with Johnny Mac, btw.

4. Bjorn Borg - ultimate Ice Man.

5. Yannick Noah - passionate and entertaining.

6. Younes el Aynaoui - same reasons.

7. Ivan Lendl - surprise surprise, the guy 'everyone hated' back in his best years. It was good to see him play that oldies tournament recently in my country! He gave some rather amusing interviews as well. :D

8. Ivan ljubicic - the formerly 'elderly statesman' of tennis.

9. Jan Siemerink - if only for having a positive h2h against the GOAT. :worship:

10. Fernando Gonzales - the Hand of Stone, and never to forget, his hilarious bouts of bad sportsmanship. :p

Honorary mentionings: Vitas Gerulaitis, Fabrice Santoro, Gustavo Guga, and perhaps a couple of others who I can't remember how to spell their names right now. ;)
The list is subject to change at any given moment.

Well, the last time you posted 2007 in the favorite players thread which was a general thread for active and retired players.

As I know that you won't decide between Roger and Rafa anyway in an active players thread I just thought to suggest you to post in the retired players thread instead

Never in doubt that Safin is winning this, lol.

I guess we have to wait until Roger retires to see a new winner in this section

I'm just surprised that Borg is ranked so low (11). I guess too many young guys who never had a chance to watch his matches.

Could be the reason, yes.

I started to watch tennis after he retired for the first time and don't really remember that much from his comeback try in the 90ies.

What surprises me a bit is to see Wilander being ranked so low.

He was one of THE players in the 80ies but apparently people these days only think of him as a commentator on Eurosport.

it's clear that the poll hugely favours players from the 90s and 00s (for the latter : the ones who don't play anymore) because of the age of MTF members.

McEnroe is only just ahead of Borg in the poll despite playing until much later (Borg really stopped in 1981, his later "come-backs" were jokes), and despite, in the opinion of many ones, being much more entertaining (Borg was a huge star and hugely respected but his game was often not entertaining, and even, let's say it all, boring  ).

Reason for all is serve & volley.

I'll mention some oldies that I've never seen live here but since YT now allows some long clips, I can say I've seen them play.

Richard Krajicek - youth idol
Rod Laver - class
John McEnroe - the one and only one
Pete Sampras - no comment
Stefan Edberg - grace
Arthur Ashe - great YT moments
Ken Rosewall - WCT Finals 1972 !!
Michael Stich - smooth serve
Tim Henman - RG 2004 !
Jan Siemerink - Low Countries solidarity, lol

Here are my favorite retired players:

1. Cliff Richey - just a bulldog on the court; loved watching this guy play
2. Ivan Lendl - a legend, no more need be said
3. Guillermo Vilas - one of the greatest players of all time, and a real treat to watch on the court
4. Petr Korda - liked this guy's game, although the drug ban really killed his career and changed the way fans thought about him
5. Rod Laver - perhaps the greatest player ever; he against Federer in their prime would have been quite a match
6. John McEnroe - great talent, pretty bad attitude, but always fun to watch
7. Jimmy Connors - 1200+ lifetime wins; need you say more?
8. Michael Chang - a real scrappy player; loved his occasional underhand serve
9. Stefan Edberg- a beautiful game all around
10. Bjorn Borg - still may have the highest lifetime winning percentage of all time, even after going 0-16 in his ill-fated comeback after his retirement

Do Hewitt, Nalbandian etc count?? :P

Ok I got lured in here to post my retired tennis players topic so here I go. I have been following tennis since 1992 I think, so players from after that day are listed:

1. Ivanisevic (always loved him, his personality, his game...but he topped it off with winning Wimbledon afterall...otherwise Rafter would have been my #1, but that win just made him epic)
2. Rafter (especially his game, but also his personality, his late-blooming, his perseverence...just a great player ::))
3. Kafelnikov (loved him, and him also playing so much doubles!)
4. Ferrero (such a pity he never reached his former level again)
5. Safin
6. Coria (i really hate him being so underrated. he was the best clay courter bar Nadal in the last 10 years and was almost just as dominant during 2003/2004....couldnt top it off with RG, goddamn....but he would have given Nadal a challenge were he to keep his level throughout his career
7. Agassi (just a classic)
8. Philippoussis or whatever you spell it (I just like Aussies :P)
9. Arnaud Boetsch (no idea why I always liked him, but I did)
10. Kuerten (how can you not like him :D)

True, there are two ways of doing better. Improving your own score or seeing your opponents get less. I hope Edberg and Rafter won't fade from people's memories, though, they deserve to be remembered. As do so many others. This thread is great for remembering them :)
