Pete Bodo I just have one thing to say to you for calling Gael an idiot. Fuck You!!!!!!!!!!!! Why dont you go watch your precious Sampras highlight films. Also how can ESPN say Gasquet is more of a contender than Gael. Last time Richard made a GS QF was 2007. Gael has made 4 GS QFs since then.

On the other hand this is the first slam in ages I think Gasquet has a chance to reach the QF

They hate him because he is black.

Bodo and the rest darenot say he plays "monkey tennis", lest they incur racial wrath.

Gasquet being white, of course they hype him. Of course they brush aside the "kiss the stripper w/ coke in her gums" story from Miami.

And I support both players.

I know right when has Gasquet ever beaten Nadal. Gael beat Ferrer in five sets at RG last year what did Gasquet do against Djokovic. Absolutely nothing. Gael took a set from Fed in his lone GS semifinal unlike Richard. Case closed and I didnt even bring up Davis Cup lol!!

And yet in the same article Bodo called Tsonga "not an intellectual giant". I don't particularly like calling racism at every opportunity, but yeah...

I don't like Gael Monfils myself, but Peter Bodo's writing is disgusting. He hates on Rafa any chance he gets and talked about Juan Carlos Ferrero's wrist and knee surgery in the sickest terms imaginable. I think Monfils's style is showboating and his constant sliding around on court is not entertaining to me. Also, it's a good way to get really hurt. However, Bodo is a vile individual and his writing is insulting.

As if what Monfils has done all these years playing the way he has isn't idiotic. Silly thread, because the way I see it, Monfils will revert back into his old habits during the slams. This certainly isn't the first time Monfils has shown us his talent and potential. Just like Jason Goodall said, it is extremely frustrating (nice way to put it rather than calling him an idiot, but means the same shit at the end of the day) to watch Monfils as you see him play fantastic all-round tennis with both great offensive and defensive skills, yet when it comes to the biggest and best events against the best players of the world, he goes back to square one.

There were a lot of offenses there, and calling Monfils an idiot is not at the top of the list. That was a disgusting and classless piece of writing. Even if he was going for the insult-type blog post, there's a way to do it without being offensive. He failed miserably at that.

Monfils is a clown, give him a brain transplant and you'd be looking at a multiple slam winner by the end of his career. He's absurdly talented, but will never reach anywhere near his potential.

His mental approach (which holds him back hugely) means that he'll continue to have 'haters' unless he changes it.

Watched him throwing himself around in an exho today, spent a fair amount of the match touching his knees and making out like they were hurting, yet did a few ridiculous dives and risked injury. Stuff like this sortof points towards the guy being an idiot.

Bodo is just a frustrated Amercian who probably would die for the depth and flair of the French tennis squad, both male and female, and the popularity tennis has in France which would also make is life as a tennis writer better.

:secret: I found out on wiki that he is s born Austrian which does not help either. ;)

Hm... I read the article as soon as it appeared, and I could've sworn the article being about/having the title "idiot savant", i.e. about Monfils being at the same time brilliant and frustrating... something like that.

I don't know whether later it was revised or something, but the savant part seems to be missing now, and only "idiot" reference remained, which alone looks horrible of course. I don't know whether that was intentional or just a reviewing mistake :) I went over the early comments and it is mentioned, I'm not making it up :p

I can see what he's taking a jab at. To be honest the line between being a clown/showman and an idiot is pretty thin.

Sure it's cool to give the crowd a little something extra but Monfils have often clowned away breakpoints, getting broken himself in ridicolous fashion, thrown away tiebreaks. He's also gotten injured on totally unnecessary plays. Those things are not even debatable it's a fact over his career that his brain has cost him probably multiple titles. Meanwhile his talent and athleticism is top notch and arguable among the best on the tour.

The radical fans won't like it but it's how it is. He'd probably be called out more if it wasn't because many journalists and fans totally love his personality and style (+ some are afraid of getting some kind of racism branding just because the color of his skin)

It's Bodo. It's better to ignore him. He's not interested in writing quality stories, he's interested in getting attention.

The title alone - with the use of the word "frog" - indicates that Bodo was intentionally stirring.

Gasquet being white, of course they hype him. Of course they brush aside the "kiss the stripper w/ coke in her gums" story from Miami.
In what world did people brush that story aside?

I do think that you're playing the race card too quickly. Gasquet has been at the receiving end of a LOT of criticism, a LOT.

I hardly see a hype in this comment from Bodo.

Over the years, Tsonga's vulnerability to injury slowed his progress and also lulled many of us into thinking that he was destined to be one of those semi-realized talents who would forever nibble at the edges of superiority but never take a bite and swallow. It didn't help that one of Tsonga's countrymen, Richard Gasquet, had already conditioned us to think that way.

Cannot believe people here still take Bozo seriously. The guy is a classless bigot and its actually funny he calls someone else an Idiot. Even Monfils :D
The only so called "analyst" worth reading is Steve Tignor (who though is an epic jinxer :o)

I guess he, like many other tennis fans and journalists, has this thing where he hates guys who are incredibly talented, but lack any brain and desire and so waste their talent stupidly. Monfils is a great example of that.

+1

Tignor speaks about quite the same matter as Bodo but without the deviations to "stupid" or "not an intellectual giant" and it's more realistic and readable : he says they are, to his eyes, "frustrating", they always manage to make you believe one day by their play that they could reach higher results, when you didn't expect, and then next day you're disappointed when you did expect them (of course Gasquet has raised the same opinions but the difference is that he doesn't appear as desiring being a "showman"). Tignor speaks about them "enjoying too much fun" and also about "being too nice", if I remember correctly.

Anyway, as a Frenchman, I can say that neither Tsonga nor Monfils do appear as "intellectually stupid" when they speak in French.

But of course Monfils is known as a "special" guy, like "living on the moon", with a lot of imagination and spontaneity, quite lovable I must say, although I'm not fond of his game on-court and although of course this kind of people can also be often misunderstood and provoke bad reactions.

There's always a debate about his game : some think that he doesn't know how to build a point at tennis (spontaneously I have this impression), but the persons who know him better say something different, that he just is very complicated and instinctive, not enough focused usually.

People who know him better say that he is clever and complicated actually, but he's not pragmatic at all, which is surely a big quality in tennis like for a Nadal or a Federer.

Tsonga is more level-headed. He also sounds like a nice guy (Monfils as well by the way)

As for the opinion of some like Bodo about the game that "only winning is important", does he also think Dolgopolov is an idiot who clearly said the opposite ? Imo he's not idiot at all, he just has different goals.

Surely the common point between Tsonga, Monfils and Gasquet is that they have other concerns, other pleasures in life than winning at tennis. Is it "typically French" as Bodo would be "typically American" in his comment ? Probably it's partly so, and probably one of the reasons why French tennis players have not had much success in tennis is them enjoying other aspects of life than winning in tennis, but there are many exceptions in each of these countries.

First off, we all know Bodo is a douchebag. I too consider Monfils an on-court clown but to call him an idiot in an official article like this is out of line.

Valuable life lesson: Miserable people will always hate on happy people. Always have, always will.

Monfils enjoys the ever living s**t out of his life. He's wildly entertaining, one of the most popular guys in the locker room, and electrifies the crowd everywhere that he plays. If more players were like Monfils, tennis would be a far more popular sport worldwide.

However, he's got two things going against him: 1) he's eternally happy, and 2) he's dark skinned. With the current crop at the top of the game there is no way that Monfils "should be a multiple Grand Slam winner." He might win an extra match here or there, but that's about it. Find me a poster obsessed with "hating" on Monfils, and I'll show you a poster who is utterly miserable with his own life that has passed him by.

MaratandMilos

Agree to disagree. I think it'd be more idiotic to be a stereotypical boring wallflower who lets his best years pass him by. Monfils should probably always be a top ten player, but certainly not much more. He plays during a time period that has some of the best players that the game has ever seen, and he realistically could have never been ranked higher than the top handful.

As it is, Monfils is one of the most popular players on tour, gets asked to play about every exhibition known to man, bangs hot girls left and right, and is one of the biggest promoters of the game. Could he win a few extra matches here and there? Sure. However, when he is 50, I think that he'll be thrilled with how he spent his time on the tour as opposed to so many of my friends that are now retired and wish that they'd made the most out of the best years of their lives.
