it always participates in it and that's fine
Needs not that he gets discouraged, it is a big sportsman and he will so much be motivated! Safe fixed price Lleyton is head of series number three of the tournament thus one of the big favourites!

Hewitt hits Paris keen to keep the focus on his game

01nov04
ONE country south of his lost love, Lleyton Hewitt came into the golden-brown Paris autumn yesterday on his way to a new life or, rather, a new version of his old life - one without Kim Clijsters.

In two ways he went underground. The French organisers of the tournament he is here to play went along with his wishes and kept prying eyes - and cameras - away from him as he went through his preparations for the Paris stage of the ATP Masters series.

But if you rode the Metro - the sleek subway system that is so much part of Paris - you saw Lleyton everywhere, on the posters plugging a tournament in which he is the second seed and will be microscopically examined by the world tennis press to see if he is carrying scars.

If the world were a more romantic place, Hewitt could drive north to Belgium and Kim Clijsters in a few hours. She is just as much in hiding as he, though, protected by her family and neighbours. What happened remains a mystery.

It is unlikely to be solved this week. Hewitt's coach Roger Rasheed said he had nothing to say about the affair except that he had nothing to say, and that Hewitt would not discuss it either.

Hewitt is travelling with Rasheed and his old school friend Hayden Eckermann. Yesterday they went to enclosed indoor courts at the Roland Garros complex, where the French Open is played, for a practice session. French tennis officials and security men declined admittance.

But other players alongside Hewitt said he seemed to be the same man, hitting with authority and confidence, working tirelessly on his serve, friendly enough but uncommunicative.

Technically, Hewitt has little at stake in this tournament, which he will not join until tomorrow when he plays the winner of a couple of qualifiers.

He is one of five who already have qualified to play in the final of the gold-plated Masters series in Houston, Texas, starting November 13. He could have skipped this Paris tournament altogether.

But unless he breaks cover before then, after that match will be the first time Hewitt has faced the tennis media since the world learned on Clijsters's website that the marriage was off, and his entire demeanour will be minutely examined.

There are mixed feelings about the Australian in the tennis press. His refusal to give one-on-one interviews, even to those most sympathetic towards him, has grated. Tennis hardly exists to the general public outside the big events and the tennis media believes it plays a part in keeping young men like Hewitt in big bucks and deserves a quid pro quo.

In showbiz terminology, most tennis tournaments don't draw flies until the final weekend. They hardly bothered opening the gates for yesterday's qualifying. There were more kids outside skateboarding than spectators.

Yet there will be some consideration for Hewitt, who is seen to be a much more mellow man than he was - and Clijsters was given a great deal of credit for this. When he does speak, you usually get straight answers but it is always difficult within the confines of a post-match press conference to get to the heart of him. And, he knows it.

Hewitt's ubiquitous parents are not expected in Paris. They are due to rejoin him in Houston. The relationship between them and Clijsters has been mentioned as a factor in the breakdown of the affair.

There is no doubt that many close to the sport are genuinely sad that Hewitt and Clijsters have split. Each seemed so much the complement of the other, one tense and hyped, the other relaxed and calm.

Very interesting article. Thanks for posting it, NOMAD. Now, more than ever, I doubt that the popular images of Lleyton and Kim as depicted in that article were ever accurate. I'm glad that Hayden is with Lleyton along with Roger, so he has some support during a difficult time.

I'm sure Lleyton will be fine, he's tough.

This tournament maybe a good thing for him, to get his mind off other things.

I hope his parents finally step back even more. I think it's great they support Lleyton, but it would be better for him in most ways if they backed off somewhat.

If it's true that the parents only attend tournaments when Lleyton invites them, then it might be Lleyton who needs to back off, not them. But, frankly, I think we'll see them more than before, at least for the time being.

Hi guys :wavey:

Gaga you are not coming during the week? I went to the quallies on Sat and Sunday and on Monday for the first day, and it's almost 100% that I'm going on Thursday. I haven't met Lleyton yet, but met Roddick, Moya (just an hours before the announcement he wouldn't play), Mirnyi, Safin, Rochus, Robredo, Lopez,Enquist, Malisse, Mathieu etc. (talked to Mirnyi's dad, Arazi's mum, flirted with Fish's coach :o )The tourney is great and the people are really friendly. :)
I was there at the Monfils match, and man that was huge, the atmosphere was awesome.
The only weakness of the tournament is the security, or I should say the lack of it. It's literally non existent. You can take anything in, wether it's a packet of biscuits or a gun. There's no control.
Anyways if anybody coming Thursday tell me

Lleyton's interview on Tuesday.
Hewitt: “I felt like I could have easily been 6 3, 6 2 out there, and in the end you get in a bit of a dogfight for the second set. But to his credit, he kept hanging in there. When I had breakpoint to go up 4 1 double break in the second set, he came up with a massive forehand up the line, when I felt like I had the point pretty much won. So he's got a lot of talent out there. He's a very flashy player, like a lot of the top French players are. He's going to be a tough player in a few years' time.”

“He's obviously a big boy. He moves extremely well for a tall kid as well. But, yeah, he's a little bit like myself out there. I think he likes playing in those situations, and, yeah, even for me, even though you don't have the crowd on your side, I much prefer playing in that atmosphere than go out there in such a big arena, a great arena out there, with no crowd. After a couple points out there, there was one we were both at the net volleying and that, you get a standing ovation. That's what tennis is about; that's why you play the game.”

“Yeah, for me, Houston is a little bit different this year compared to Sydney and Shanghai when I had the opportunity to get No. 1 at the end of the year. So you sort of go into the Masters Cup with a lot more pressure, and I don't think you actually probably enjoy it quite as much because there's that extra incentive on the end of it to try to finish No. 1. Whereas, this year, it's an incredible effort for any guy to finish in the Masters Cup. You know, it shows all the hard work that you've put in through the whole year to get there. So I think this year I'll probably enjoy it a little bit more than Sydney and Shanghai because there was so much pressure and expectation going into those two.“ ;)

I went to Bercy and actually saw Lleyton play. It was a good match, and Lleyton played well. If Massu wasn't injured it would have turned out as a pretty exciting match. The crowd was fair but the atmosphere was not like at the night matches.
I took some photos, but unfortunately I don't have a digital camera so I cannot put them up. I have to admit that lleyton looks even better in real life ;) but he has a stupid ponytail, but mostly he kept his cap on.
Hayden was there as well, but he was seated far from me (with Roger).

UP FRONT ....

– ->> – FEDERER TO ANNOUNCE UN “YEAR OF SPORT” … World No. 1 ROGER FEDERER will be at the United Nations in New York on Friday to announce 2005 as the “International Year of Sport and Physical Education.” Federer will make the announcement at 12:30 p.m. along with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, UN Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace Adolf Ogi and defending New York City Marathon women's champion Margaret Okayo. The UN will unveil its plans for a year-long push to highlight the power of sport to bridge cultural and ethnic divides and improve the quality of people's lives at the press conference. The aim of the year is to encourage the use of sports to promote education, health, development and peace. Federer will head to Houston after the announcement to continue rehabilitation from his thigh injury and to prepare for the Tennis Masters Cup that gets underway Nov. 13.

->> – RODDICK SPORTSCENTER ADS HIT THE AIR … ANDY RODDICK is featured in two ESPN SportsCenter ads that are being rolled out beginning this week. In typical ESPN fashion, the ads are humorous, often poking fun at the athletes and anchors appearing in them. One spot featuring Roddick is called “Nickname.” The No. 2 player in the world is in the ESPN offices in Bristol, Conn., trying to figure out why SportsCenter anchors do not call him “A-Rod,” giving that nickname instead to New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. In the second spot, called “Idle Hands,” Roddick is sits in a waiting area on the ESPN campus and passes the time by bouncing a ball off his racquet. His restlessness is much to the consternation of those around him, including ESPN's Scott Van Pelt and the University of Massachusetts' Minuteman mascot. In addition to these spots, ESPN will feature Roddick in a “Budweiser Hot Seat” segment that will air on Nov. 17 to coincide with the network's coverage of Tennis Masters Cup from Houston.

->> – ROLAND GARROS REVISITED … In town for the BNP Paribas Masters, GASTON GAUDIO returned to the scene of his remarkable French Open victory at Roland Garros on Wednesday, followed by numerous journalists and camera crews. Gaudio returned to the centre court for the first time since his memorable come-from-behind victory in June. He also visited the Fédération Française de Tennis museum on-site. "I came the other day to practice here but didn't feel anything special,” Gaudio said. “But today, I came back to the centre court for the first time and it's an amazing feeling, it's emotional, it's indescribable. I didn't think I would feel this way.” By virtue of his win at Roland Garros, Gaudio earned a spot in the Tennis Masters Cup, which gets underway Nov. 13 in Houston.

->> – WORLD TEAM CUP QUALIFYING UPDATE … The Race to D ü sseldorf is coming quickly to a close, as the 2005 ARAG ATP World Team Championship will be decided based on the INDESIT ATP Race at the end of the 2004 season. The first seven countries with the lowest aggregate rank of their top two players on November 22, 2004, will automatically qualify, while one wild card team will also compete in the tournament, which begins on May 15, 2005. As of Nov. 1, the United States, Argentina and Spain had qualified. Heading into BNP Paribas, Russia, German, Chile and Sweden rounded out the top seven. The Swedes combined rank of 41 gives them a decent advantage over the teams who are looking to sneak in and qualify. Great Britain is eighth with 49, Croatia is ninth (51), and France is tenth (55). (Follow the qualifying updates on www.arag-world-team-cup.com)

- - > TOURNAMENT TALES:

IN PARIS: LLEYTON HEWITT, GAEL MONFILS and RICHARD GASQUET all attended the main draw ceremony on Friday at the BNP Paribas headquarters in downtown Paris.

-- > Alongside TIM HENMAN, HEWITT also took part in a tournament 'street tennis' launch activity, at the famous "Esplanade du Trocadero" near the Eiffel Tower. "It was really fun. I think that was super advertising for tennis to play in front of such a wonderful backdrop," said Henman after their show match in front of several hundred amazed passers-by. "I really enjoyed taking part here. Such events are very good for our sport, " said Hewitt. A number of camera crews filmed the event after which players signed autographs.

-- > On Sunday, GUILLERMO CANAS and MARIANO ZABALETA and LUIS HORNA made a visit to Paris's most famous avenue, the Champs Elysees. The players had coffee, visited the Virgin Megastore to shop for CDs and DVDs and were followed by photographers and an FFT camera crew.

-- > FERNANDO GONZALEZ took a scenic boat trip down the river Seine on Tuesday in a 'batobus' to see some of the sites of Paris. Among other sites, he got to see the Place de la Concorde and Notre Dame de Paris. "This city is really impressive, probably the most beautiful city in the world and I feel privileged to take time to see the city. We have to take advantage of the small amount of free time we have to get to see these places," said Gonzalez. (Photos available through Getty Images)

-- > JONAS BJORKMAN, ROBIN SODERLING, DOMINIK HRBATY, LLEYTON HEWITT, RADEK STEPANEK, JEROME HAEHNEL, NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO, VINCENT SPADEA, CYRIL SAULNIER, MIKHAIL YOUZHNY, FELICIAN LOPEZ, GUILLERMO CANAS and MAX MIRNYI all took part in FFT autograph sessions for hundreds of kids at a time as well as posing for photos.

-- > TOMMY HAAS also payed a visit to the SAGEM booth and received a free SAGEM cell phone on Monday.

-- > ANDREI PAVEL and MAHESH BHUPATHI participated in a Mercedes-Benz Kids Clinic on Wednesday at the mini-tennis facility on-site. RICHARD GASQUET visited the Mercedes-Benz VIP lounge in a 30 minute Q&A session, signing autographs and posing for photos.

-- > Sponsors BNP Paribas collected clay player handprints throughout the week. TIM HENMAN, PARADORN SRICHAPHAN, FELICIANO LOPEZ, GAEL MONFILS, TOMMY HAAS and LLEYTON HEWITT all left their mark.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Hewitt: “Yeah, it's good. Obviously, you prefer to get a little bit more match time out there. I felt like I was starting to get on his serve the last couple of games. I felt like obviously I should have broke at 2 1, 15 40. Came up with a couple of massive serves. I felt like I was starting to serve a little bit better out there today. I knew I would have to pick it up from, two days ago against the French kid, compared with playing Massu out there today. My next round, if Safin gets through, then I'm going have to pick it up another notch. So, yeah, it's all good preparation, you know, going into Houston, then for the Australian Open.”

>On going into the Tennis Masters Cup: “As I said the other day, it's a different situation for me going into Houston this year compared with, you know, Shanghai and Sydney, when you can't get No. 1. It's more you probably enjoy it and I guess reflect on, you know, how tough it is to get into the Masters every year, and to be able to do it and not maybe have that pressure on the end of it I guess as much.”

Marat was just better than Lleyton today. Lleyton had 2 set points in the 2nd set, but Marat fought hard to save them and take it into the TB. Once Lleyton lost the 1st point in the TB, it ws pretty much over and Marat just overpowered him. Shame it didn't go the distance, but great fight by Lleyton in the 2nd set :)

Even putting aside the recent breakup, it might be that he's best off taking most of the end of the year off, and recharging his batteries for the next year. It seemed to really work well for him last year.

Ah well, sounds like Marat was just too good. ON the plus side, it'll give him more time to play that golf he was talking about with the Shark beofre Houston :)

Safin played amazing  yesterday, but Lley didn't play his best.
Hope Lley will play better in Houston:kiss:

Hewitt: “It was, I think since the US Open, the best match that I've played ball-striking wise. In Tokyo, and even the Davis Cup tie against Morocco, it was a little bit awkward to get out there and with the motivation. Since the US Open I think that's, ball-striking-wise, a big step up. Playing against him, that's probably as well as I've seen him play in a long time. For some reason he plays extremely well here in Paris. He likes this court.

“I kept hanging in there. In the end I could have turned it around if it went to a third set. But, you know, who knows, if I got that 15-40 point at 6-5... I'm happy with where my game is at. I felt like I went up a big notch today from my first two matches. Hopefully I can improve next week in Houston.”

(On Safin) “He's playing extremely well at the moment. He's obviously extremely confident, won Madrid, he's playing the big points well, he's playing the big matches well. That's Marat, though. I played him two years ago here in the final, and he played extremely well that whole week as well. I think, you know, this suits him. He's such a clean hitter of the ball off both sides, he's got a big serve. The court stays low. To actually get him off balance and change direction on this court isn't easy when he's hitting the ball that hard. Out of the other three or four guys left in the tournament, you know, someone's going to have to have a helluva day to beat him.”
