So BadBackerer's appearance does not thwart Streakerer's efforts. That's good but it's not the most important. In the presser he says that he hopes he'll be okay by the middle of next week. I hope that too for his and his fans' sake.

Didn't follow the presser, what was the reason for withdrawal?

Injured back vs Zemjla, there were rumblings that he'd withdraw after the match vs Seppi where it was acting up. A lot of pace off the serve etc.

This isn't too unexpected, definitely precautionary before the AO. Bit worrying for him tbh to have back problems at the start of the season, especially given it's going to be one of his last.

If he isn`t 100% certainly taking any risks 1 week before AO would have been a bad decision.
Sure,if he had this kind of problem in a big event he would have taken his chances but in this situation is a good move.
It`s not like his ranking will suffer in a big way from a 250 event.

Cut the flaming out. Federer for all his faults isn't one who retires in matches or fakes injuries, it's the 2nd time in his career that he has given a walkover.

It's not common or about other fanbases bitching, naturally Doha is more important than an upcoming Grand Slam.

Really? You all caring about the streak when Fed is injured?
You all make me sick.

One of the best players in history is injured and had to withdraw for the second time of his career, who the fuck needs to think about the streak? You want a streak? Here, Fed had so many streaks in his career, why the hell should we care about another one?
The only important fact here is him getting well to play the AO; to stay in the big career for n°1 and to win some slams. Really, fuck the streak. And you all caring about that, get a fuckin soul.

Arakasi
01-06-2012, 01:04 PM
From the press conference:

"I'm sorry for holding this press conference," said Federer, who has been enjoying a 20-match unbeaten run.

"I hurt my back in my second round match (against Zemlja) and I don't see any improvement today.

"I've played through two matches in pain and don't think it's the right thing to risk anything more now. It's the only right decision to make.

"I've just been trying to manage the situation really. Back spasms happen and sometimes you can contain them with massage and pain killers. But I don't want to drive myself crazy with more painkillers, and I need to do what's right to get it better."

"It's only the second time I have pulled out from a tournament, and I have never pulled out during a match. It's a sad moment for me, the tournament, and the fans, but health comes first."

Federer said he feels "optimistic" that he will be fit for the Australian Open, where he hopes to win back the title he lost to Novak Djokovic last year.
"Although it's not very good it's not crazy bad," he said.

"I have had bad backs on the past, but this is not very good, otherwise I would definitely be playing.

"I feel that without play and with the right treatment, I will get through it in the next few days. That's my personal opinion right now.
"But then of course I have along journey in front of me going to Australia, but I hope maybe midweek next week I should be a hundred percent again. But that's just guessing."

it's troublesome for Fed fans because he's not a player that withdraws unless the pain is killing him. So a clear warning sign. But yeah i think everyone needs to get used to that Feds body won't be as unbreakable anymore at the wrong side of 30. He should focus on the important tournaments, probably shouldn't have gone to Doha in the first place...

Australian open anyway I didn't care much, have foreseen another Djoko-Nadal final for long.

But time to re-consider february-march schedule to be ready for the very key-part of the year from june to september, esp. as for him, most important on grass is being fit and dynamic not like last two years.

I hope he can play Davis cup first round, for him and for Stan Wawrinka who deserves that this year.

yes he's been lucky enough for that, but as everybody, you've heard a lot about other players' physical issues, losing "only because of that" although they could play the tournament and even didn't retire.

Besides, yes, he's said that in end of 2008-beginning of 2009, he had chronicle back problems, although he didn't speak about these at the moment and stayed optimistic then people ignored them.

That's his way : doesn't like to speak about his physical issues then people believe he never has some, as if he was not human. Like for Wimbledon 2010 comments after Berdych's loss (although Berdych did play great, yes  )

Worst thing that could happen. Fed not playing because of health issues. I feel his chances for AO just decreased dramatically.

Seriously guys, if its just a spasm/muscle pain which based on the fact that he has played through it the last 2 matches it will be fine in a 3-4 days MAX. AO 2012 doesn't even get under way for another 10 days. He's played 5 matches in the last 7 days counting the exho and honestly thats all he really needed. He'll be even fresher for australia plus it will be hot there and not in the low 60s as in doha which makes it way more likely for this stuff to happen. He made the right move and I'm glad he's not playing any more matches in doha. Plus i rewatched the match against seppi and he was honestly moving at like 60% on purpose and only really trying to move quickly when he had to but he still could so I think he's just being extra safe because it's so close to a major which is smart.

Having had back spasms myself playing in colder weather I can tell you that your always good to go in a few days.

yes it does .I want to know what all those people who said withdrawal from an event should count as a loss during last november say now

Counts as a defeat.

Watch Olderer serve at least 15 aces every match come AO with "broken back" like he did against Berdych in Wimby 2010.

Hope he's 100% for AO. Based on what he said today,...no need for drama.

No doubt if he loses in Melbourne it will be because of this injury.

Edberg should have entered the main draw - could probably have won the event with his sexiness.

It's sad that Edberg even today is better than some top 20 players

LOL Nadal and Djokovic fans have a lot of room to talk about using injuries as excuses  You guys are pathetic. Federer has a lot of flaws but faking injuries is not one of them. Second time he has given a walk and never retired yet. Not a lot of players who can claim that for themselves and certainly not Nadal or Djokovic.
