Okay, we all know the draw was pretty easy, but this kid reached his first semi of an ATP-Tour level.
He'd probably lose to Murray, we all know that, but that doesn't affect his good level and his achievment. GO BERNARD!!!

Cannot WAIT for the semi against Murray. C'mon Tomic, give the tennis world a mini shock!

His movement is still woeful at times, not sure how much that's ever going to be fixed throughout his career. Fast clay is loving this, or maybe hating it; two of his faves facing off in the semis.

I would not underrate Tomic, Virusss. he looked really quite good in this match.... there is no doubt big things are going to come from this guy and he is still so young.

I have a strong strong feeling he is going to upset Murray, Tomic does things so well for his height. Andy should be concerned

Wow! I am impressed!

Nard's raw talent and innate tennis IQ have meant that he doesn't even require foot speed to dominate, but his improvement in acceleration and general mobility over the off-season has been astonishing . I could not believe my eyes when he ran down and punished those balls. Just how much scope for improvement does he still have? A very frightening thought for the men's tennis fraternity.

Poor old Istominge had no hope of taking it to a third set when it reached a tie-breaker: TND loves those, and he was as cool as ever.

Tomic has been looking good I don't think it would shock someone who has been paying good attention but you're right haha Australia will freak out if it happens.

Wimbledon last year showed he had the goods though and I think at this point he has the talent and game. would not surprise me if he does

I agree 100% nardog, his movement is so much better than before!!? and his anticipation? literally even if he had started running in the wrong direction or misjudged where a ball would go, he shifted gears immediately and got going. totally impressed

Hope you're right. I see Tomic as a very talented young guy who deserves a really good ranking and give Australia some bite of glory. One of the countries who gave the most to the sport (if not the most important) needs a true hero.
Even if Tomic isn't Australian, he kinda is. Australia supports him and would celebrate his triumphs as theirs. He's representing Australia's flag, that's a really BIG honour to tennis.
I never underrated Tomic, I just think he'd lose tomorrow, but in a few years, he's gonna be very difficult to Murray. :worship:
Really deserved SF.

Very entertaining match and thought both players were quality through most of it. Bernard is showing great maturity for his experience level and held his nerve well against an Istomin that was always challenging particularly in the second set which was probably one of the better sets of tennis I've seen this year thus far.

He wasn't that impressive.... he barely made a dent in Istomin's serve. Had Istomin not been his typical muggish self donating unforced errors at big points on return then it would have gone 3.

Match with Murray will be very interesting.

Agree, everybody needs to calm down, I know NardDog is just trolling though.

He still makes a lot of errors and return from far to back. But the positive from this match is that his top spin forehand is really awesome, it's amazing how much he's improved that part of his game. Still a LOT of work to do though.

Yeah. Istomin actually won a higher percentage of return points. Tomic won the important points though.

First time I see Tomic play. Indeed his movement isn't good. But what impressed me is that, despite being younger than the opponent, he looked the more experienced one. The guy seems to be using his brain out there.

Good sliced backhand, not sure about his top spin backhand though. Serve and forehand work well. He just has this almost too easy swing at the ball, and I bet people will start saying he doesn't fight enough because of that.

Good player to watch.

Spot on.

I feel like his doesn't trust his natural athleticism and reflexes (or maybe they just aren't present enough) so he retreats to allow himself more time to return.

in tennis all you have to be able to do is hold your own serve and win points on the opponents serve at certain moments (tiebreaks, particular games in sets to break, etc). Tomic has a great serve and his movement appears much much better than last year. the reason for excitement is because he is so young yet showing such great mentality, because his serve is great, and because if he is better this year and made the QF of Wimbledon last year, anything could happen this year. plus he's in Australia currently and plays for Australia. it's exciting man.

i agree of course work is left to be done but if he were to beat Murray then we have to wonder if he is really about to make it big

Australia is so rich in tennis history, you are completely right, it's justice for them to have a good male player pop up, it's been years.
i totally agree in a few years he probably will be on top of the circuit, but when seeing big improvements from 2011 already just gotta wonder if this year will be mediocre for him or great

Goodbye to challengers, goodbye to futures, hello to beeing a seed in the tournaments. Hello to the SFs. I like his start. It'd be difficult to beat.

Yep, as the legend NardDog said and as I have said in the past, the guys natural tennis IQ is sky high. It really makes up for some of his deficiencies in a huge way, in how he can make players look like headless chickens. One of the biggest reasons I want him to succeed is to see proof that pure tennis brains, strategy and smarts can overcome immense physical attributes.

The only guy I've seen make Tomic look foolish on a tactical level rather than aspects depending more on physical abilities was when Roger beat him in the Davis Cup on grass a few months back and even there he had his fair share of making Fed look like a mug and won a set.

I expect the Murray Tomic match to be *extremely* tactical. One thing about Tomic is though he isn't fast, he is strong and very capable of effortlessly injecting pace and power into the ball, so in some ways he is also physically rather gifted.

I have no doubt he can beat Murray, or any player if he has a good day and stays aggressive. He was owning Nadal in that 2nd set, hitting winners left right and center. But his problem always has been losing concentration or playing too passively. You saw a hard hitter like Istomin when he has a chance to hit, he makes Tomic suffer. Bet when Tomic was aggressive, Istomin was struggling.

if he stays assertive I agree that is the key. he seems more confident than before and with better movement comes a player who is more willing to go for shots, the court opens up as they have as extra time when reaching the ball earlier.

but that's just it, stay focused on going for it and he can beat anyone. sometimes Tomic reverts to playing it too safe way behind the baseline but i think is just because of insecurity about slow movement. movement improved = a Tomic who travels around court more and therefore plays more agressively and beats top players!

Why isn't Tomic Australian? I'm not Australian in terms of heritage but was born and raised in Australia and consider myself completely Australian. Tomic would be no different. If you are going by heritage as an Australian, then there are no Australians except aborigines.

Everyone needs to calm down - he beat a guy ranked 73 with a losing record on the tour and zero titles won - Murray is going to make mincemeat out of him - Murray does everything Tomic does just 100 times better - and I am not even a Murray fan - oh and before everyoine starts talking about how young Tomic is - Murray, considered the defintion of a late bloomer, had had better results on the tour at a younger age. So not at all convinced yet of Tomic's future.

Agreed if Murray brings his A game and serves better than he has done to date (pish second serve in particular). Otherwise we can expect an exhuberant home crowd behind Tomic and then it's a completely different ball game. Still expect Murray to grind through but it could be a hard fought match.:)

Tomic's present ranking settled down in results.

Now he is the underdog on the match against Murray with nothing to lose but the glory in case of the victory.

Such a great start of the year for him whatever happens tomorrow.

Tomic will easily beat Murray. Bernard quickness is suit with his game-style. All that slices are perfectly suited for that. And e.g. Marin Cilic was so slow with 18-19 and he is quick now.

The organisors are idiots. They should put start of matches at 5 or 3 pm. Now Europe can't watch while Australians need to watch under that hot australian sun and there is no night matches for them.
