Doha QF : Federer def. Seppi 6-3 5-7 6-4

Up and down from Relaxerer but did what he had to do. Serve was a bit of for cruising though and Seppi played really good at times.

Seppi won his 1st set against Fed that is a win in itself. Haha, of course he had the double break in the 2nd failed to serve it out, but breaks for the set.

Federer had some lapses but in reality was never losing this match.

Yes, this match is about Federer/Seppi, so mentioning Nadal/Djokovic related stuff will be deleted.

Federer mugged it up on court today. 41 UEs, aced by Seppi 6 times, broken 4 times :o those stats say pretty much all.
But a good win to get under his belt, thats his one horrific display for the tournament.
Now lift your sh!t in the semis for the love of god Roger :o You are one terrible player to watch win ugly

On the plus side though, that boil on his temple seems to be growing smaller :D Small delights, yay!

Good stuff in the first set. Seppi picked up his game in the 2nd he returned very well. 3rd set was kind of classic Fed, 1 break at the start of the set was all he needed to win.

The returning part is crap from Roger though. He will have same major issues with Tsonga' serve tomorrow.

Absolute GARBAGE from Fed. Seppi firing 4 aces against Fed? :rolls:
Problem #1 - ye olde Wanderings in Mirkaland, Problem #2 - absymal ROS most of the time.

Seppi - funny, leading 5-1 in that second set, I hoped for him to feed Fed a deserved breadstick. Of course he didn't manage that, choked massively, only for Fed to choke just the same at 5-5. Hilarious stuff actually.
Glad Seppi at least got the set he fully deserved to get.

You mean 3rd set, but the rest is spot on. Did what was needed to win. People don't get it in here, can't always play at the top level day in, day out. Fed wasn't losing this at all and he will improve tomorrow better opponents will do that.

On-court interview. :hearts: Still can't get over how tight his shirt is.

I didn't watch the first set. Second set was sheer comedy - Seppi up a double break, Roger levelled, then lost the set on his serve. To be fair to Seppi, I'd imagine it's probably easier to take a break point against Fed than to serve for a set against him.

Both guys hit some sensational shots (Sepp's BH DTL -), Roger made a ton of errors, but the result was never really in doubt. I honestly don't care that much how Roger does in this tournament, so whatever happens against Tsonga, happens. It would be nice if he raised his level a bit though.

He said he felt pain on Wednesday night and Thursday morning (translation from Swiss German from the RF forum). Apparently he was even surprised to win those matches and he said it usually takes 2-3 days for this to heal. But if he continues playing and God forbid wins against Tsonga, he'll just cause himself more pain. Just withdraw from the Tsonga match so you retain some chances for AO. Damn.

P.S. He also mentions that it's a muscular issue so that probably means he still has a fairly good chance to recover fairly well for AO. Still, he gives himself little chance against Tsonga (bit like Nadull does to lower expectations) and coming from Fed that does not sound very optimistic

If it turns out to be anything serious (which is being denied in the Swiss press btw - 'only a muscular issue') then I'm sure Fed and his team will not take any risks of making it worse by playing on in a 250-tournament while there's a GS round the corner, in other words, he will show up and play when he feels up it, and in the other case withdraw from Doha.
He's withdrawn from tournaments due to back problems before.

As in most desert areas, temperature drops rapidly at sunset.
The match was played after sunset in the evening and it was really chilly out there from what I saw. I don't know, about +18°c, which is really fresh compared to warmth during the day.

Lots of evening matches, and it's around 18C after the sun goes down - which is quite early, about 5pm iirc.

Lowest average temps of any hard court event, and close to the coldest event on tour (which I think is Munich).

Looner
01-05-2012, 09:59 PM
Well, play starts at 3.30 so there's not a lot of time to play before the sun sets at around 5pm. Considering they have to warm up, after an hour of match play the sun sets and the temperature falls considerably. Balls also become heavier and slow conditions down. I hope Tsonga is aware of this and plays as fast as possible so Fed gets off the court (hopefully on the losing side as don't want to see the bull beating him yet again when Fedster is injured).

Saw this over in the rf forum:
Roger said his back was blocked in the 4th game of the R2 match vs. Zemlja, the night before... he said he was happy he was able to play his QF, even surprised that he was able to win the match

Roger even contemplated withdrawing for the QF "the pain was very sharp Wednesday evening and Thursday morning... I decided to play after practising on Thursday but I wasn't able to take all the risks. I played with the handbrake on."

"I would have needed three or four days for the pain, muscular, to disappear. I have to, however, play every day here."

"My chances of victory are reduced. I simply hope to be able to play an acceptable level of play. But I am absolutely not thinking about the title."

I'm worried.

Mystique
01-06-2012, 04:06 AM
Well, Roger prides himself in his phenomenal record of not retiring mid-match and ever forfeiting just a single match in like almost 1000 matches
I think if he feels its not too serious, he will come and play a little like how he did in Abu Dhabi, he has got enough practice going into AO (and an injury too :o). I dont see him trying too hard if he plays. He shouldnt at least. Rather lose to Tsonga than to Nadal.

In my honest opinion, he should withdraw anyway coz it is a risk and worsening this or a freak injury is the last thing he needs now. But we know Roger is a super stubborn guy
