From what it seemed, Canas was the one holding easier in the final set until he served one bad game, double faulting on match point. It is kind of ironic for a man who is known to come from behind by being rock solid under pressure, that he should fall victim to another man turning around when he is applying all the pressure. One bad game, and poof, it was gone.

willy...you have already done the good job, but  is this the first 5 sets rally match you lost this year? when you fight this final into 5th set, i thought u had already won that!

OH YEAH!!!!! :D :rocker: What a match this was  That was unbelievable and I'm glad that Lopez won it at the end. I saw that he was playing great the whole week and his draw wasn't too difficult and he is a great player on such a surface. Not that I'm a fan of Lopez, but congrats for his first title, very well deserved and he played great tennis to beat Canas.

Sure you must also give Canas congratulations as he was the main factor to make this match as exciting and good as it was and his recent winning record was very impressive. He just found his master today in a match that included (almost) everything and that was decided by a few close decisions and a few single points.

Ironically, it was "girly boy" who was tougher than Canas at the end and who grinded down one of the biggest fighters and fittest players of the tour   Canas saved 0-40 in 11th game of the fifth set and it seemed (or maybe some people would have expected) as if Lopez was mentally done because he had all three break points saved, but somehow "girly boy" didn't back down and immediately worked his way back into another rally to earn another break point what finally made impression on Canas because, on the next point, he double faulted away the deciding service game with just his (I believe) first double fault since the end of the 1st set.

Outstanding match what would have deserved two winners!

Enjoy this day Lopez fans ;)

Good match, kudos to both players, it could have gone either way in the end. I thought that Canas would edge it out, but in the end Lopez was slightly mentally stronger.

But did you see all those amazing backhand smashes from Lopez?!?!!!!!!!! :)
yes, but I also saw all those pathetic backhand volleys of Lopez ;) :p

well, under the bottom line it was enough to beat Canas. But Lopez play at the net has become better the longer the match lasted. That was the key for some important points for Lopez.

Go lefty! :)

Good luck in Madrid pretty one :p

Go lefty! :)
exactly, Canas really could never handle his lefty serve as well as the rounds before when he faced serves of Nalbandian, Dent or Haas. Also I think that it worked pretty well for Lopez playing his forehand crosscourt on Canas' backhand. That was an interesting match from this point of view, it didn't even matter much that Lopez (as always) couldn't do much with his backhand. Maybe it was exactly what he needed to beat Canas in the rallies to bring some variation into the game. Something Haas failed to do.

best backhand of the match Feli made during the first game, 3rd set. :yeah:
some good bh overhead smash, some were lousy. ;)

Congrats to Feliciano Lopez. Always great to see someone winning with a one-handed backhand - playing tennis as it was supposed to be played.

you're right, it was a good and exciting match. Lots of interesting rallies with almost everything in it. (okay, Lopez only sliced his backhand most of the time)

And the "pathetic backhand" and "girly boy" Lopez did a pretty good job against Canas, especially in the deciding moments at the end of the third and fifth set.

When I was reading yesterday's "Canas def. Haas" thread today before the match, I thought that not many people expected that and some even gave Canas the title before he actually won it. Well, in analogy how somebody else here would prefer to say in such situations: "All those who thought that Lopez was just an easy fodder for Canas on his way to the title, EAT UP YOUR WORDS" ;) :tape: (sorry, I couldn't resist :p  )

Congratulations Feli on winning your first title, it's about time and this definitely could be a contender for best non Slam match of the year. The ironic thing is that Lopez has managed to beat Canas twice both in 5 sets.
