Tennis Tipping #1 – DOHA

http://img.xcitefun.net/users/2011/01/222357,xcitefun-floating-tennis-court-1.jpg

What is Tennis Tipping?
In the game, participants pick the winners of all main draw matches and are placed in a knock-out system. That means each participant plays a different participant and whoever predicted the winner of most matches correctly, moves on to the next round. The same applies for doubles, but you're in a team format and your scores are combined.

Note:
- In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will decide who moves on to the next round.
- In case a player (i.e. the actual ATP Player) retires in a match, this match will be counted as long as one point has been played. If players are replaced by a lucky loser after the start of Tennis Tipping, these matches will be cancelled.

How to Sign-Up:
Just post here that you would like to play. You can only play one tournament per week. Entries will be based on ranking. Everyone can commit.
Please read this post for more information
http://www.menstennisforums.com/show...14&postcount=1

How to send in picks:
Picks can be sent in as soon as the draws are ready. Remember, you pick a winner in every match!. Picks should be sent by PM, so that your opponent does not know your picks. Picks should be titled: [TT: Salzburg, day #]. Picks can be sent in anytime until the beginning of play each day. If you're still in both singles & doubles, you use the same tips for both. For doubles, you still tip the ATP singles matches, not the doubles! No changes can be made after the play has started.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE
If the board goes down as has happened before, send your picks to kingroger1@hotmail.de

Saturday Morning Interview

adee-gee, World Number 103 and top seed in the Qualifying tournament warming up for the match against Baink...

Q: adee-gee, you arrived in Doha by the last minute and signed up for the Qualification with just a few hours to the deadline - how come you decided playing Doha and arriving so late?

To be honest I've spent a lot of the off-season debating whether I should return to the TT tour. I had a dreadful 2nd half of 2011, and I was beginning to feel my best years were behind me. It took me a long time to decide what to do, but I have decided to give myself one final shot at the big time, I feel I still have some game left in me. I only confirmed my decision late this afternoon, and therefore jumped on a quick flight to Doha and here I am!

Q: You'll face Baink who is ranked #234 in your first match. What do you expect and how did you prepare for it?

I don't know much about him/her, my coach has done a little research and informs me that it'll be a dangerous match, but as the top seed in qualies I expect to come through it.

Q: Last year you had some good results - you appeared in the Final of Auckland, reached the Quarters of Madrid, the Fourth Round at Wimbledon but then stopped playing after Bucharest in September. Are you satisfied with 2011 and why did you finish the year early?

Very good research :worship: you're an excellent journalist! The truth is, I fell out of love with the game. I was used to being in the top 20-30 in the world, and my ego struggled to cope with the early exits. When I started having to enter qualifying for mickey mouse events, I decided it wasn't for me. So I took the rest of the year off and had some fun. I actually entered a few events but then had a few too many drinks and forgot to turn up. Luckily, I'm back with a new attitude for 2012.

Q: Why did you choose to play Doha and what do you expect for the week?

Because both the other tournaments had closed their entry lists by the time I decided to play Doha is a beautiful place, and is a superbly run tournament by a wonderful manager ;)

Q: In doubles you're gonna play with supertec. Do you have experience partnering him?

Nope, never. We were both without a partner with the deadline looming, so we have decided to give it a shot. It should be a lot of fun.

Q: You'll play on Court 1 not before 3pm today. Are you happy with this scheduling?

Absolutely, it's the biggest stadium and I feel that it's a good decision because it gives more people the chance to watch a legend like myself :sport:

Thank you very much and Good Luck!

Thank you, have a great week and look forward to my winner's interview next Saturday! :D

Saturday Night Interview

A few words from World Number 10 keqtqiadv in front of his hotel...

Q: keqtqiadv, I hope you had a great off-season! Where did you spend your holidays?
At home, the only place I want to be during the off-season.

Q: Last season you won Acapulco, Stuttgart and Bangkok.. You started and finished the season being ranked Number 10 and had a record of 55 wins and 36 losses. Can you draw a personal conclusion and reflect on 2011?
My last four seasons were very similar. Played WTF in doubles but failed to qualify in singles. It still was a great season. TT players don't win 7 titles every year.

Q: You seemed to be really exhausted in the end of last year when you lost your openers in Basel and Paris. A word from you about the length of the season!
Did it seem so? I didn't feel exhausted. No complaints about the length of the season. If we had 52 weeks of tournaments, the season would be even better. First round losses happen all the time, we all have plenty of time to rest :p

Q: You've been really busy lately with your pre-season preperation. Tell us what you tried to improve and what you've been working on!
To be honest, I've been busy with :eat: and . I think it's the best preparation for another long season of tipping.

Q: What are your goals in 2012?
I don't like to set goals. Any good result here and there and an acceptable ranking in the end of the year? Ah, a Davis Cup title too. :p And a USO title to complete the doubles GS.

Q: Why did you decide to play Doha and not Brisbane or Chennai which are located much closer to the Australian Open?
I'm managing Brisbane, so I can't play there. Doha x Chennai? Probably because I'm used to play here.

Q: Last year you suffered a first round exit in Doha. What are your expectations for this year's tournament?
Not good. I expect first round losses in singles & doubles. Losses don't hurt when the expectations are low :p

Q: You play doubles with Netin! Why did you choose him? Do you pay the same attention on doubles as on singles?
I do pay the same attention to singles & doubles, but I don't know why I play with Netin. He's a terrible player & partner. He didn't send picks in 5 of the last 6 tournaments we played in 2011. And I don't like most of his favourite players. :p

Last question: This is your fifth season of Tennis Tipping. How much longer do you think are we going to see keqtqiadv on the tour?
Good question  Right now I'd say 1000 years if possible, but we never know. :p

Sunday Interview

A quick interview with abollo after his win against supertec...

Q: abollo, you're ranked #128 so you have to play Qualification here... Is that really what you wanted or did you expect to play qualies?

At first I thought I'll be playing qualies, but when I signed up I counted the players and should have been the last direct accepted player in the MD, but apparently someone was signed in under an old name. Anyway I wasn't expecting to be in the MD.

*Q: Today you defeated supertec with a score of 14-12 which was one of the best performances in QR1. What was the key to win the match?*

I like to play in tournaments in arab countries. I feel I can perform better with some knowledge about Arab players, although they are not so many like here in Doha they are 4 in qualies and 2 in the MD. But I feel confident about my pics.

*Q: You had a really good finish of 2011 winning Champaign CH and reaching the Quarters of Helsinki CH. Do you still play with the momentum of those successful results?*

Yeah. I was happy to be able to finish the year with a great run especially in doubles where I cracked the top100 for the first time.

*Q: What did you improve in the off-season? Has it payed off today?*

I took some rest to be able to focus on the next season. I also entered two exhibitions trying to improve my picking and I think it payed off very well today and hopefully for the rest of the week.

*Q: Tomorrow you will face Tennis7_24 a newcomer to the game. How will you prepare and what will be your tactic to win?*

I'll do my best and respect my opponent and play like any other day and hopefully I'll get through using my experience.

*Q: If you pass the last hurdle you will face Blue Heart24 in the First Round - it's also possible you play him and geangr in doubles if they win their Final... Are you already looking forward to a match-up like that?*

Yeah I will be looking forward to such a match and I wish to get the best out of it. He's a good player, but I'll still do my best and play for the win.

*Q: You play doubles with Holmzy. It'll be your 20th tournament partnering him - out of 46 matches you won 25 as a pair. What do you expect from your partnership in 2012? *

Yeah. We are having a great partnership which started early in 2011. He soon improved well in singles and got to the top 40 although he only started playing in 2011. He always has great picks and I expect the best out of our partnership in 2012 and hopefully I don't screw everything.

*Q: Why did you select to play Doha and not a Challenger where you could've entered directly?

Like I said I feel confident playing in Arab countries that's why I selected Doha. Also I am currently focusing more on my doubles career than on singles and I would get here into the MD. That's why me and Holmzy decided to play here.

Thank you very much and Good Luck!

Monday Interview

joe87 having lunch before his match vs. WBishop

Headline of the Day

If I'm playing well I know I can beat nearly everybody. Yeah, and to my opponent: I've never heard of him

------------------------

Q: joe87, World Number 87 :D - welcome to Doha!
How is your first impression of the tournament?
Well what do I have to say... so far it's very well organised and hope it will countinue like that. We already qualified for the Doubles-MD, which was a little miracle after we were down 0-2 in our first round match. Can't wait for the next matches! :)

Q: You will face WBishop of Italy in Round 1 - he cruised through the Qualification and already got used to the outside conditions and the surface while you only played doubles... Are you happy with the draw or could it have been better? Do you even know him?

Doubles was a good preparation for me already, so I think there should be no disadventage.
I don't care that much about draws, if I'm playing well I know I can beat nearly everybody. Yeah, and to my opponent: I've never heard of him

Q: How are you going to play tomorrow? How does your game plan look like?
I know nothing about my opponent, so like always: I will concentrate on myself, try to play at my best and hopefully take the win. :)

Q: Within 1 year of play you cracked the Top 100! You are one of the best Newcomers! Does that give you advantages such as better sponsorships, coaches etc?
Well, I didn't really expect to get to the Top 100, usually I only wanted to play part time, like here and there a tournament just for fun. But soon I did well on the challenger tour and so I decided to countinue regullary.
I wont change anything in my sponsorship or coaching-situation, that's definitly part of the success.

Q: Last year you won 1 title and reached 4 finals. What are your thoughts about this breakthrough?

I only won one of 5 finals? :( Don't remember that well. But I knew that I can do well in TT. I've already reached the #1-ranking in WTA-doubles and #8 in WTA singles.

Q: You finished the season by reaching the Quarters of Salzburg CH - that's 6 weeks ago. How did you spend the off-season?

I tried to get some practise on WTA-ITF's. But to be honest, it didn't work that well, I only got something like 3 wins in 5 tournaments.

Q: You will play on Court 1 today. You already practiced there - will that be an advantage?
I think there's not much difference with the other courts. But of course I'm happy that it's televised, so my fans can watch me play at home. :D

Q: In doubles you will face 4th seed <Eve>/scoobs - do you think you'll have a realistic chance? Are you happy with the way you came through the Qualies?
We definitly will have a chance, in doubles you never know. We just have to believe in us.

Last Question: How did you celebrate New Year?
We didn't really celebrate it, just waited till midnight to watch the firework and then went to bed, as we had to be ready for our doubles match. ;)

Thank you very much and Good Luck!
Thanks! :)

Tuesday Interview

Marita after the opening win vs. andrijagajic

Headline of the Day

It will be very difficult but I have to try this (Marita on the question if there is pressure to defend all the points from 2011)

-----------------------------

Q: Marita, it was a really close one today - you only won on SR's... You didn't look quite happy while playing... What do you think of the match?

It was a match very close like most games in TT. I was lucky

Q: Was it hard to get back into the rhythm after the break? You really seemed to struggle and looked a bit rusty...

Yes, we have to enter fast pace but ....

Q: You played on Centre Court - describe the atmosphere? How did you feel out there?

It was hard to get into a rhythm I'm not used to playing at night but it was fun

Q: You went 69-42 last year - these are incredible figures! In the shadow of Tanking The Set who became the Player Of The Year you rose from #45 to #2 by winning three big tournaments and reaching three more finals. What made the difference in 2011 in comparison to 2010?

During the year 2011 have matured and have prepared me very well. I hope in 2012 to the last jump

Q: Do you think you can repete a year like 2011? If yes how are you going to overcome the pressure to defend so many points?

It will be very difficult but I have to try this

Q: Is your major goal in 2012 reaching the Top of The Rankings or winning a Grand Slam?

Either of the two objectives are very nice I hope to get some

Q: Last year you reached the Semis of this tournament. Always a nice place to come back and start off the season?

Yes, is a very beautiful and I can enjoy playing here

Q: In doubles you play with defending Singles Champion balloon. How is that partnership working? Which abilities does balloon have you don't have?

Balloon is a great player. Last year we had good results but we hope the luck will change in 2012

Wednesday Interview

Dmitry Bond leaving the court after defeating vexxx for a Quarterfinal berth

Headline of the Day

Drink fresh juice and breath fresh air :) (Dmitry Bond on the question how he can explain his great start to the season)

-------------------------------

Q: Dmitry Bond, congrats on reaching the Quarters in both Singles and Doubles! How does it feel to start a year like that?

- Very surprised! Good start, but I must more training!

Q: Does such a great start have something to do with your off-season preparation?

- Yeah... Every day on my vacation I have prepare to a 2012-season... What I prepare??? Is a secret ... May be fresh juice and breath fresh air ))

Q: Last year you reached the Final in doubles partnering kondrashov. Do you connect Doha with good memories?

- Yes! Doha is the great tournament with great organization!

Q: How did you like the tournament conditions so far?

- I like them!

Q: You defeated World Number 10 keqtqiadv in the First Round. What does such a win mean to you?

- keqtqiadv is the great player, I must say! but he is convenient for me... two time i defeated him. This win mean that I can play here, and can win one or two matches. This is great!

Q: After that win you defeated vexxx. Other players lose after a big win - not you. Tell us how you tried to remain focused!

- I try every time thinking about matches. Sometimes try to have fresh news about players, watch TV, think different versions of matches.

Q: You are ranked #57 in Singles and #21 in Doubles. Which position do you aim to reach by the end of 2012?
Have you set yourself specific goals to reach?

- My chief aim - play in 30 in singles and 15 of doubles! I want stability. Important for me - don't lose positions!

Q: In doubles the top seeded team lost in Round 1. Do you think kondrashov and you will be the favorites now?

- Oh, no! Too much quality doubles players are here, in Doha. To play in final or win this tourney would be lucky for me and kondrashov!

Q: You face 6th seed KittyTennis next. It will be your 2nd meeting - KittyTennis won the first one at Heilbronn CH last year. What do you expect from this match? How are you going to outplay KittyTennis?

- Mmm... KittyTennis! Yes I remember Helibronn match. I expect to do my best to win against Kitty! Today I train my serve and forehand - to help me in match. I can say only: "Good luck, Kitty".

Last Question: In doubles you will face abollo and Holmzy - abollo is the crowd's favorite while Homlzy had an impressive season in 2011. You play both Singles/Doubles on Centre Court - what will be the key to win that match?

- Centre court is TV-court! And we must play best tennis. I believe maximum motivation would help us!

Thank you very much and Good Luck

Thank you for interview! See you later!

And you will win on Shootout SR1 because abollo and you both gave a set to Karlovic while only ONE player from Dmitry Bond and kondrashov gave a set to Karlovic :)

Thursday Interview

Machiavelli after practice before heading back to the locker room :D

Headline of the Day

This year I am trying the Marat Safin style, enjoy life on the tour, get in touch with the ladies and the cities (Machiavelli on the question if he feels pressure towards ranking etc.)

--------------------------------------

Q: Machiavelli, congrats on reaching the Semis in both Singles and Doubles! Today you won 2 really close matches - both on SR's... Are you happy with your performance?

Yes, I am very happy, not afan of Andreas Seppi, but the Italian Jodler delivered for me, I must say I was a bit surprised..

Q: On your way to the Semis you defeated 4th seed scoobs, joe87 and 8th seed Holmzy. You are more and more a giant killer! Are you now focusing on the title?

Of course, I hope I can start of the year with a title, but the competition is tough, I will have to give my best to reach my goals...

Q: You will face Russian Dmitry Bond. You have a 0-1 record vs. him but that's 4 years ago... How will you prepare for that match?

I will do some cardio training, a couple of stretching exercises, massage, just kidding.. I will try to out smart my soviet opponent..

Q: You play the doubles SF right after the Singles SF. Will you change your rituals? Do you think you will be fit enough to play 2 matches on such a high level?
Stamian is my biggest fortitude, I can last for hours.. I mean on the court....

Q: This is your first tournament partnering KittyTennis... Why did you choose her as your partner?

It was faith, i have longterm doubles partner in Snoo foo, we have been partners for years, she skipped the 1st tournament due to some personal obligations, and Kittytennis was kind enough to team up with me; the last time i had a new partner I won the title too (with my brazilian friend Saulo in a CH)

Q: You are ranked #49 in Singles. Last season you reached the Final of Rotterdam, the Semis in Moscow, Rijeka and Braunschweig. At the Grand Slam tournaments you reached the 4th Round in Melbourne, the 3rd Round in Paris and Wimbledon and the 2nd Round in New York. Are you happy with 2011?

To be honest, I had higher expectations, in 2010 I won my first Masters title in Indian Wells, and last year was a let down..

Q: What's your major goal for 2012?

The start of the season has been promising so far; and my goal isa TOP10 finish if I stay injury free...

Q: With the SF berth you will be in the Top40 in next week's ranking. If you win the tournament you'll be in the Top 30. What do milestones like that mean to you? Do you have an eye on the rankings or do you just try to play without ranking pressure etc.?

I was once in the TOP10 so I know the feeling; pressure used to be there, but this year I am trying the Marat Safin style, enjoy life on the tour, get in touch with the ladies andthe cities, less pressure seems better; Doha ain't a party haven tbh...

Q: The Australian Open are coming up now - as I said you reached the 4th Round last year. Do you think you have a chance of winning Melbourne if you maintain your form and the momentum?
Everybody has a shot at it, the 1st few rounds are crucial, we shall see, but i do like to play down under..

Q: Will you play a further prep tournament?

Auckland is up next for me

Q: Tell us about your further schedule in 2012!!

AO is at the corner, afterwards I am obligated to play at home in Zagreb indoors, but afterwards my partner will be free to chose if we will stay inoors in Europe or had off to South America to play on clay

Q: Did you like the tournament so far?
Great tournament, the organizers/manager has been amazing and very helpful..

Good luck to all the guys left in the draw....

Final Preview

This year's TT Championship Match will be played between 5th Seed Tytta!. who is ranked #22 in the World and World Number 49 Machiavelli from Crotia. They meet for the Third Time on the Tennis Tipping World Tour - the series is tied.
It's a duel between former Top 10 players - both aim to get back into this range soon.

On the way to the final Tytta!. dominated each opponent - only the match vs. fellow countryman Rafael Fernando was a bit closer. If Tytta!. wins the title she will be back in the Top 15. Machiavelli spent much more time on the court - each match was decided on SR's except the opening win vs. US Open Champion scoobs. Starting off the year with a title would definitely be a dream come true for Machiavelli - last season was clearly below his level - now he could crack the Top 30. Having worked hard in the off-season the Croat will try to play with less pressure - the Marat Safin attitude of course.

Having lost early in Doubles Tytta!. will most likely be fitter tomorrow - Machiavelli reached the Semifinal partnering KittyTennis and had to play late on Thursday Evening. The coaches and physios will have to work hard to bring Machiavelli in a reasonable condition :D

Tytta!. appears in a Final for the 18th Time and for the first time since Beijing 2011. Machiavelli will play a Final for the 7th Time - hasn't reached a Final since Rotterdam 2011. Machiavelli wants to end a 22 month title drought (W: Indian Wells 2010) while Tytta!. aims to win her 9th TT World Tour Title and the first one in 20 months (W: Madrid 2010)

A very quick word from Deathless waiting in the catacombs with his partner Nando_L...

Headline of the Day:

I take a look at my crystal ball for the tougher matches, of course. (Deathless Mortal on the question if he has certain rituals before matches...)

---------------------------------

Q: Deathless Mortal, it's your first Final of the year in the first tournament of the year. Are you excited?

Of course, I don't often get to ATP finals

Q: You've had a great week - defeating the top seeds in Round 1 was a highlight. How do you feel?

That was a great match, but we were the best team of the round, so we deserved to win. In the other rounds we were a bit lucky. But of course I'm happy we got in the final :)

Q: What do you think about your performance in the last days?

I'm playing great for the whole week, I'm just sad I didn't make it to the singles MD, I would probably get far.

Q: What's the key between Nando_L and yourself?

He's a great partner, his ranking speaks for itself. We're both playing really well this week and I guess that's why we got this far.

Q: How will you approach the Final? Do you have a certain game plan?

No certain game plan, but we're in a worse situation than our opponents as they have CB advantage. Tomorrow's match will be a decider of course.

Q: What do you expect from abollo and Holmzy? They had a really convincing week as well including a win vs. 2nd seeds Dmitry Bond and kondrashov...

I expect them to play as good as they have played for the whole week, without any silly picks, but I still expect Nando and me to win ;)

Q: How did you prepare yourselves for the match? Do you have certain rituals?

I take a look at my crystal ball for the tougher matches, of course.

Q: How did you like the tournament so far?

It's a great tournament, ran by my lucky manager
I won the last two doubles tournaments which you managed. Those were challengers, but I hope to continue our cooperation at the ATP circuit as well :)

Thank you very much and Good Luck!

Saturday Interview

Welcome to our daily interview session - yesterday we had Holmzy as our guest

Q: Holmzy, first of all Happy New Year! You've had a great start to the year reaching the Doubles Final partnering abollo! Can you describe your emotions?

Thank you and Happy New Year to you too! Yes I am very happy with the start we have made. To make the final in Doha is special and we are both really excited. Our performances in singles and doubles is really encouraging:D

Q: What does the partnership with abollo make so special and succesful?

Abollo is a great guy and we clicked right from the start of our patnership this time last year. We have a great understanding with each other and we have a lot of belief in each other's ability. Off the court we get on really well also and I think that contributes to our success on the court!

Q: This is your fourth doubles final - you lost all previous finals. Do you feel pressure to finally win a title?

Haha yes it has been on my mind for a while but I believe my time has come!!;)

Q: Over the week you had great performances defeating 2nd seeds Dmitry Bond/kondrashov for example. Which of your game elements do you regard as the decisive one in order to win matches and titles?

Yes we have had some really close matches this week. I think my consistency is key and my never say die attiude in every match is vital also. Our Belief and hard work in every match is massive too!!

Q: You've already played 20 tournaments with abollo, he has won 2 doubles titles before. Is he more relaxed and can he calm you down a bit?

Abollo's performances on the challenger tour last year was unbelievable, he went on a great run winning those 2 titles. I think those wins show how clinical he is and that when we play together he keeps me grounded and not to lose my head mentally haha!

Q: After Day 1 the Final is tied - neither team could get a point - how will you prepare for tomorrow?

We will relax in our hotel, maybe enjoy some quality food and then get our game face on. Our mental preparation is a priority if we are to succeed.

Q: How did you feel out there during the first stage of the Final? You didn't look too happy - missed some easy shots - it looked like you and a abollo tried to bluff a bit....

I must admit I was quite nervous as I was so desperate to get off to a good start. I think at times we tried to hit the perfect shot too often but we didn't lose our patience and we are still level going into the final day

Q: What will you try to improve tomorrow?

My net play will have to improve and I need my serve to be on form. If that goes to plan then we are unstoppable!

Q: Deathless/Mortal and Nando_L are the favorites in terms of their rankings. Considering they could not score today do you think they are a bit nervous and can't handle the pressure?

I think abollo and I prefer to have the underdog tag and that all the pressure is on them. We will go out, give it our all and enjoy our tennis!

Q: They only play together for the second time - it's their first final as a team while you already had a few good results partnering abollo. Do you think that'll be an advantage?

Ye sure, I believe our experience will be pivotal in determining the outcome of the match. abollo and I know what we must do to bring the title home!;)

Q: What do you expect from tomorrow?

I expect a good crowd in to watch our final and our style of tennis will give us there support. I don't think there will be many breaks of serve and that it will be a close match. One thing is for sure, Hawk eye will be used a lot haha!

Q: You are ranked #75 in Doubles but #32 in Singles. What are your goals for the season?

I think just to keep the good run going and keep rising up the rankings in singles and doubles. Last year was my first on the tour and it was unbelievable for me. Being awarded Newcomer of the Year was the icing on the cake for me!

Q: What about your upcoming tournament schedule?

I am off to Auckland and then on to the Aussie open. After that who knows, if I win the Australian open I might treat myself to a nice holiday haha.

Thank you very much and Good Luck!

Thank you for managing and all the hard work you put in!

But: Machiavelli has an advantage on SR's - 3 correct one's compared to Tytta!.'s 2 in the previous round :wavey:

Congratulations Tytta!. and abollo Holmzy! :worship:

It's Tytta!.'s 9th title - her first one since Madrid 2010! Machiavelli couldn't take the chance to end his 22 month title drought - you had a great week though :worship:

Also Doha was a big week for abollo and Holmzy - in their 20th tournament and their 3rd Final they were able to capture their first title as a team!

 to Deathless Mortal and Nando_L who had a great week as well - defeating Singles Champion Tytta!. and Deboogle!. in Round 1.

Good luck for the rest of the season - I hope you enjoyed my management!

Thanks for playing Doha :wavey:
