TARGET- Pro-Islamic Alliance against Female Genital Mutilation

I attended a presentation yesterday and was deeply moved and shocked. I wish everybody would take a look at this and spread the word. YOU can make a difference!

Each day, 8,000 girls are robbed of their genitals and therefore of their dignity (one third dies due to loss of blood). That is one girl every eleven seconds. Throughout the world, 150 million women are affected. TARGET wants to put an end to this crime. FGM is practised mainly in African countries – and has been, in some places, for over 5,000 years, regardless of religion and nationality.

TARGET’s “Pro-Islamic Alliance against Female Genital Mutilation” aims to set out clearly that the custom, wherever practised, is incompatible with the Qur’an and with the ethics of Islam, discriminates against Islam, amounts to presumption in God’s name and is a sin. Leading Islamic authorities have endorsed the alliance.

Ruth, seven years old, a Christian. She is sitting on her aunt's lap, who is suddenly spreading her legs and holding on tight to Ruth. Another woman holds her arms. Ruth is screaming, but she doesn't stand a chance. The razor blade takes away her clitoris. Without anaesthetic. There is blood. Lemon juice as an antiseptic. A cloth to stem the bloodflow. Afterwards a celebration.

Cutting off the clitoris is the mildest form of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Fatima has to endure the hardest form. She is eight years old, a Muslim, and lives in the Danakil desert, Ethiopia. She will have to undergo Pharaonic mutilation. Like her friends. Laila, for example, who has not spoken since. Who has been mute for eleven weeks. According to an estimation of the UN, one third of the girls will never speak again. Death due to loss of blood.

Four adults are trying to hold Fatima, who is struggling for her life, in place. The razor blade takes away the clitoris, the labia, everything. Even her soul and trust in life, including her trust in the adults whose hands are smothering her screams. Then she faints. Her vagina is closed with acacia thorns - just like a zipper. Without mercy. Her thighs are bound together with bandages.

After four weeks the skin has grown together. What is left is an opening the size of a grain of rice. From now on urinating will take half an hour, menstruation two weeks. In her wedding night she will be opened - either with a knife or her husband's penis. When she gives birth, the opening will have to be widened. Again, with a knife. Afterwards everything will be stitched together again. This cycle will repeat itself.

Lifelong torture.

This is heartbreaking. Those poor little girls  I'm so thankful to be born in the United States where atrocities like this are far from the norm. These children should be in school or out playing with friends, not having to endure something so painful and life-altering like this.

Religion is so primitive

This is less about religion and more about controlling a woman's body.

I say women should do with their bodies whatever they want ...power to the women

Yes.

Poor women, I remember the story of an African model who suffered through it, it's simply awful how women are treated in some cultures

I agree, religion has always been a plague of our society. If I had my way, all the relgion would be banned, all the churches/mosques would be demolished and having imaginary friend would carry a prison sentence.

Really? You would throw me in prison for believing in God?

Desparate times call for desparate measures. It's time to remind people we're living in the 21st century, not in the middle ages, especially most Americans who still refuse to vote for an atheist president no matter how capable. Perhaps, prison sentence was too harsh on my part, you're not a real criminal after all, but I would definitely build "re-education camps" for the delusional in order to help them understand their folly of having an imaginary friend and believing in some omnipotent magician. Any notion of religion would have to be expunged from the public life, of course. And don't think I am somehow biased against Christians. I would like to see ALL religion gone, replaced with cold self-correcting science, rationality and lack of delusion.

OK, so you'd throw me in a concentration camp for believing in God?

No, it would be like a compulsory AA meeting. Re-education through knowledge, rather than violence.

I think the real subject of this thread is so horrible that we would rather not deal with it.

You're doing exactly what you supposedly are against: taking people's freedom away from them. :o

And more than religion, the issue with mankind has always been power and greed, religion is only an excuse more times than not and people will always find another one if it disappears.

Back to the thread: thanks Commander Data, her story was terrifying, I remember reading it a few years ago and it chilled me to the bone, the rudimentary procedures, the pain, everything

I wouldn't force anyone to go through something like this. Not even Aloimeh. You and Aloimeh may actually be flip sides of the same coin.

Anyway, I don't need to say anything else about how disgusting and horrible female genital mutilation is. It's really sad that it's been entrenched as a cultural practice in certain parts of the world - cultural habits are some of the hardest to change. But it's not impossible - the feet-binding nonsense that the Chinese inflicted on their women is thankfully a thing of the past. I think with education and some measure of economic progress - more likely economic progress - primitive practices continued as cultural traditions will hopefully get left behind. It's just unfortunate that girls will continue to suffer through such torture (yes that's what it is) in the meantime.

I would really appreciate if we can stay on topic here. People, please open a new thread for other discussions. Much appreciated and thank you.

This is real, and the young girls can not just turn their head or close their eyes and run away.

I agree it is a horrible matter, and I understand if people can not deal with it, I have problems myself, but unfortunately it is more real then MTF.

However there is also a great message in it. That one single human can change things that seem impossible to change, tausand year old rites justified by religion, nobody talks about it, everybody does it, seems impossible to do something but.. With the right strategy and presistance Nehberg accomplished that the 10 highest clerics in Islam signed a resolution that Female Genital Mutilation is a sin in Islam and now gets strongly punished. He already has saved many thousand girls.

As terrible as things are, it is not the right path to run away but to change them.

He now needs to bring the message to Mekka and needs support. so at least give him 20 bucks before you run off. :)

Waris Diri's story is truly one that everyone should be forced to read.
How would the guys over here react to a culture/religion that forces you to have your DICK being chopped off? As THAT's what is happening to these poor women, it's is exactly the same thing. In the name of culture, religion, or whatever, it is a genuine atrocity.

I think you should read that Holy Bible of yours again, as I think you've missed the point. :o :o :o
