Ohh Jazz, don't even talk about that.

No seriously,I don't think that was actually an injury..just precaution,I wanna believe that!

Hope to see some good matches from him...if not, well just to see him live is very good for me.
Haven't seen any game from him live,since 2002..long time!LOL!

I'm anxious! Can't wait to go there!!

david could meet haas or youzhny in the 4th round, and it's interesting that willy could face Henman again in QF, and if he won, could meet david in SF again. remember AO?

jazz_girl
10-17-2004, 01:38 PM
Yeah, I remember that. The good thing is that he won't face Federer for sure ;)
Anyway, what do you think of the second round? Will he be able to beat one of these guys?

sigmagirl91
10-17-2004, 01:38 PM
Yes. He's beaten both of them before.

novanora
10-17-2004, 01:48 PM
i am not sure. most possible, he could meet soderling, who won lyon recently,

but if you look at the tms draw, you will find any draw will be a tough one.;)
do you think he will be sure to win Gonza, Massu, Ancic or some one else in the draw? even a Qualy guy, could cause a lot trouble now. so i think the draw is ok, if he wants to win some points, some tough fights are inescapable. It's TMS, the draw is always cursed!!

Fedex
10-17-2004, 07:18 PM
His draw is not terrible. He should be able to atleast win a couple of rounds.

Fedex
10-17-2004, 07:24 PM
He can take Soderling. He's 1-0 against Soderling, with a win this year, and 1-0 against Mayer, with a crushing win against Mayer this year at the Australian Open.

Hi all - sorry for my silence thes last few days - just very busy, - lots of friends in Madrid to catch up with and things to do. Anyway I am in Madrid now (got here yesterday - Sunday night) and David is here too. He is fine - the knee doesn´t seem to be bothering him as far as I can tell. I don´t like the draw much either - but all TMS draws are hard.

Anyway - that´s all for now,

Love to all

Rosie, you're in Madrid now? Lucky you! I just saw a R1 match Alex Corretja d D Ferrer -- I think they might show Nadal tomorrow.

So what's it like in Madrid? Looks a bit coolish and cloudy. How's the tourney so far? It's crazy trying to get close to the Spanish guys and there is always lots of interest in the S Americans also.

Have fun and eat lots of tapas... are you staying close to the Casa de Campo area?

TUESDAY PREVIEW: NO. 2 SEED AGASSI, THREE SPANIARDS HIGHLIGHT SECOND DAY OF ACTION

There are seven remaining first round matches and four second round matches on Tuesday's schedule, highlighted by No. 2 seed and 2002 Masters Series Madrid champion Andre Agassi, who takes on qualifier Max Mirnyi in the evening session.

The 34-year-old Agassi is playing in his first tournament since losing a five-set battle in the quarterfinals at the US Open to world No. 1 and eventual champion Roger Federer on Sept. 9. Agassi has a 3-0 lifetime record against "The Beast" and the American won 6-2, 6-2 in their last meeting in the third round of the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami.

No. 4 seed David Nalbandian plays recent Lyon champion Robin Soderling for the second time. Nalbandian won the previous meeting 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of ATP Masters Series Roma in May en route to the final (l. to Moya).

Opening up the day session on Pista Central is German Tommy Haas, who takes a 4-2 lifetime record against Belgian Xavier Malisse. Haas is the leading candidate for ATP Comeback Player of the Year after missing all of last season with a right shoulder injury. Haas is 21st in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race with two ATP titles and a quarterfinal showing at the US Open.

The next match features Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman against Madrid native Fernando Verdasco. This is the first meeting between the two and Verdasco comes in with a 27-22 match record on the year. He won his first ATP title in Valencia in April.

The final afternoon match is between 18-year-old Rafael Nadal against 32-year-old Italian Davide Sanguinetti, who is coming off a semifinal showing in Vienna where he lost to another Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez. Nadal has doubled his match wins total from last year (14 to 28) and is 46th in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race.

In the final match of the evening, towering Croat Ivo Karlovic takes a 2-0 lifetime record against Lopez, who is coming off a five-set victory over Guillermo Canas in Vienna on Sunday. The 23 year-old Madrid resident captured his first career ATP title.

What Soderling said on David:
"He's a good player but all matches are tough. I'll have to play my best, but I'm on good form so I think I will have a chance."

Go, go David!
Beat him tomorrow!!!

As Thrilling as Formula One

20 October, 2004

Madrid - First pleasure and then work: Three of the world's best tennis players from three different continents experienced the thrills accompanying very high speeds in the co-driver's seat of a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren whilst at this year’s ATP Masters in Spain.

"It was an incredible and unforgettable experience. A pure rush of adrenalin," said the local Spanish hero, Juan Carlos Ferrero, after doing two laps with Mercedes McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa. And just like Ferrero, both Argentine's top player, David Nalbandian, and Asia's best tennis professional Paradorn Srichaphan felt very safe in the black racer with 626 horse power under its bonnet.

"Pedro is an extremely skilful driver. I did not feel at all frightened although the speed was really very extreme," commented Nalbandian, who is No.10 in the Champions Race 2004 at the moment, "I was absolutely impressed just how well the car could be controlled despite such an extremely high speed." The 2002 Wimbledon finalist returned the favor later by giving the Spanish racing driver a bit of tennis practice at the Pabellon de Cristal, the venue of the Madrid Masters tournament.

After the trip to the former Formula One track in Jarama, Thailand's national hero, Srichaphan, declared that he felt the experience was like "venturing into a new dimension of speed" and added, "Never in my whole life have I driven a car myself or been driven at such a speed before." But in spite of this he remained "calm and relaxed," said the top professional, who in the meantime is the proud possessor of a diplomatic passport given to him by the King of Thailand. Just like Ferrero and Nalbandian, Srichaphan made the most of being at the course close to Madrid and used the opportunity to drive a few laps round the course himself in a Mercedes-Benz C 55 AMG. "But in comparison with Pedro, I probably looked more like a snail," said Srichaphan.

Last year, it was America's tennis star, Andy Roddick, who got the chance to drive a few laps round the track at Jarama with de la Rosa, and he called the trip "one of the most thrilling experiences in my whole life – even more thrilling than parachute jumping." However, Roddick, who had to withdraw from the tournament in Madrid at short notice, will also have the opportunity – just like all the other participants in the Masters Cup (15th – 21st November) to get an extra automobile present in Houston – after all, the champion of the unofficial WM will be getting a Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG as a bonus. "It would be really great if I could qualify and then win the Masters Cup and the car," said motor sports fan Nalbandian.

I'm sure you'll qualify Nalby. :yeah: VAMOS! VAMOS! Although being 1-4 down yesterday against Soderling did give me a slight heart attack. :o

Pinky, thanks for the article  quite funny!

"But in comparison with Pedro, I probably looked more like a snail," said Srichaphan.
i use the bike, should i look more than a tortoise? sometime, i do think snail speed is more attractive. They are enjoying the slow life, right?

"It would be really great if I could qualify and then win the Masters Cup and the car," said motor sports fan Nalbandian.
 i should have thought that early, the car is one of his big goals to houston....... does he envy Willy when willy won Stuttgart? ;)

Although being 1-4 down yesterday against Soderling did give me a slight heart attack. :o

Small pic of David vs Soderling

http://www.atptennis.com/shared/photos/180X250/nalbandian_swing.jpg

No. 2 Agassi, No. 4 Nalbandian Advance; Spaniards Go 3-0
.....
No. 4 seed David Nalbandian also advanced to the third round by the identical score over young Swede Robin Soderling, who won his first career ATP title in Lyon on Oct. 10. Nalbandian, who entered the week 10th in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race, is trying to make a return visit to the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Houston.

Soderling led 4-1 in the first set before Nalbandian broke back at 3-5. He then grabbed the first set by winning the tie-break 7-5. Nalbandian broke to go ahead 2-1 in the second set and never trailed the rest of the way.......

David's opinion:
"No vi a las modelos, todavía no me tocó. Pero en la cancha sólo pensamos en ganar. Si es bueno o malo no sé, mientras hagan bien lo que tienen que hacer... Creo que es la primera vez en la historia, pero cuando uno entra ahí no le importa nada, sólo piensa en tratar de ganar. Si las chicas hacen su trabajo bien, está bien".
"I didn't see the models, I didn't get to play with them yet. But when we're in the court we just think about winning. I don't know if it's good or bad, as long as they do well what they have to do...I think it's the first time in history, but when you enter there nothing else interests you, you're just thinking about winning. If the girls do well their jobs, then it's ok"

De la Rosa serves 626 hp - 21 October 2004
today news

McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa has treated three of the world's best tennis players to a blast around the Jarama (Spain) circuit.

Juan Carlos Ferrero, David Nalbandian and Paradorn Srichaphan were given the ride of a lifetime by the Spaniard in a Mercedes SLR McLaren.

Mercedes-Benz is a main sponsor of the 'Madrid Masters' tennis tournament.

'Pedro is an extremely skilful driver, so I did not feel at all frightened,' said world number ten Nalbandian, 'although the speed was really very extreme.'

His thought about being in the final: "Not yet, the draw is too tough"
"Aún no, el cuadro es muy duro"
"The good thing about today, is that unlike the second round match, I started playing really well from the start, from the first point. That makes me feel very much at ease, I know I can still do better"
"Lo bueno de hoy, a diferencia del partido de segunda ronda, fue que empecé a jugar bien desde el principio, desde el primer punto. Eso me deja muy tranquilo, sé que puedo dar más aún"
"In this tournament, with the hight and how fast this surface is, Dent is a very tough player. It's true that Henman lost in my part of the draw, but there's Johansson, and he was a semifinalist in the Us Open and plays very well."

Good luck David!

12:54 | MASTERS SERIES OF MADRID

Nalbandian happened to semis in Spain
It won in sets in excess to Taylor Dent (the U.S.A.).
Tomorrow it will look for a place in the end facing the Croatian Ivan Ljubicic.
David Nalbandian, tenth in ránking ATP, took a step important to put in the Masters de Houston.
This noon classified for semis of Madrid (2.425.000 euros, cement) when winning by 7-6(4) and 6-3 the American Taylor Dent (40ª).
The match had changing alternatives. Nalbandian did not take the first Set well. Dent, very concentrated, got to be 5-2 above. The Cordovan, per moments very nervous, could not find the return him to the constants raised of his rival the network. Nevertheless, everything was modified: Nalbandian recovered that confidence that
took it to put between top ten and forced tie-break. The Argentinean did not pardon: he gained the 7-4 definition and the Set by fitting took 7-6. Dent felt the blow. Nalbandian, although the game continued being even, became the protagonist of the party. Playing in great level, it managed to break to the in a while decisive American: it
happened to win 5-3. With the serve to his favor, the Cordovan imposed his coldness and it remained with the match when winning by 6-3. This way, Nalbandian took an important step to make sure a place in the Masters de Houston, to dispute itself in November. Tomorrow in as much, the Argentinean will look for happens to the end of the match facing the Croatian Ivan Ljubicic (29º in ránking), who more early won by 7-6(7), 6-7(1) and 7-6(3) to the Swedish Joachim Johansson.
It will be the first match between both.

and, it's good to see david is on the ATP site cover again :D

From the Madrid Official site review:

Ljubicic out-guns Johansson in Madrid serving struggle

• Nalbandian is also in semifinals after beating Dent in straight sets
Madrid, 22th October 2004 (dpa) - Ivan Ljubicic went into the semifinal of Masters Series Madrid after beating big server Joachim Johansson by 7-6 (2), 6-7 (1) and 7-6 (3).

"As the match got close to the end, I was winning more points on his serve than he on mine. That gave me extra confidence in the last tie-breaker. He finished with a double-faults -maybe that was the trademark of our match- all or nothing.

Ljubicic, who defeated Johansson in the second round at the Athens Games, now stands 34-21 as he awaits an opponent from fourth seed David Nalbandian and American Taylor Dent.

"Playing the Hamburg (clay) semis was a much bigger surprise than this," said Ljubicic. "Everyone knows I can play well on indoor courts. I beat (Rainer) Schuettler and (Tim) Henman back-to-back. I don't see why I can't go all the way."

Johansson arrived in the quarters without having lost a set this week. The Swede remains level with Roddick for the most indoor wins this season (13) and with a ranking of 11th still has a chance to qualify for November's eight-man Masters Cup season final.

David Nalbandian is the second player in semifinals. He has beaten Taylor Dent by 7-6 (4) and 6-4 and will face tomorrow Ljubicic for a place in the final match.

DN: No, no; ningún problema.

Their matches have been close and I think it will be played in a great spirit and as much as I like Marat, it's about time David won a title and this is the one for him.

His return of serve needs to be at it's best, and his 1st serve percentage at least in the mid 60s, but I can't lose either way.

look at what safin said about David the final:

Safin : On Nalbandian next:

“well, he defeated me at Roland Garros. I had a lot of blisters, so it’s a good excuse. But I like to play against him. I feel comfortable. Now it’s different. He’s playing much better. He has more confidence, more experience. He knows how to play indoors. Everything depends on the beginning of the match and how everything starts. After that the match will be defined.”

sorry you won't... cos Sol has been off to her parents' home, and there is no internet access, even no computer...
tonight maybe all we Marat fans could not get TV coverage, and I do not know if I can stick to the end of the match cos my relative comes back to my home... really suck! so you know, I hope the match could be short as possible as it can be! and if it wouldn't, I have to beg you to sent me SMS... *sigh* :bigcry:

i know, hippo reminds us his blisters. But we see a more confident and experienced dolphin. According to hippo's words. dolphin will dominate the starting, and then win the match. so, sorry to hippo, but he still will be the most famous and sexiest hippo that houston has ever had.

hippo is always saying that stuff! he knows the starts of the match is important, then, do you think he will miss the domination of it? in fact, this title is more important to dolphin when it comes to the TMC entry. so I am not as nervous as you, though it is apparent that I will support hippo. ;) see you later. I am more excited than nervous!

Well, I really hope David can play, cause what I've been reading in the news really scared me. David said he's fine, but apparently his toe is completely broken, and he played that way with Ljubicic. But he was an hour late for his press conference, and he was there in flip-flops and with a bandage on his toe. Not good news at all. I have no idea how he did it, I don't even know if it's even truth. But all the media here's talking about it and blaming on the bungee jumping. Althought, I think it's stupid cause I cannot understand how you break a toe doing a bungee jumping, but that's the press here...
Anyway, the press said that they got suspicious when he won the match and he didn't seem so happy (I thought he was...) and then he arrived an hour late for the press conference wearing flipflops and a bandage on his right toe. But David said everything is fine, though someone from his team said that his toe was "totally broken" and that he needed medical treatment to play against Ljubicic and he spent the night asking for medical advices.

No I don't want to discus doping, what he did this year was very sad, and still think he shouldn't do it. And yes it was really dreadfull that he got off with a technicallity. Still think he didn't earned that gold.

Yes, it was a great achievement even to make it to the final, so he's definitely on the right path :) - hopefully the foot injury will heal as soon as possible and not become a long term problem - it would be awful for another injury to derail him just when he had got back on form.

From atp website

Safin Conquers Madrid

Marat Safin won his fourth career ATP Masters Series title on Sunday, defeating David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour, 52 minutes. The Russian’s power play proved too much for Nalbandian who was broken six times throughout the match.

Having lost the first set in 29 minutes, the Argentine was unable to hold on to a 3-1 lead in the second set as Safin struck back with two breaks of serve of his own to go two sets to love up. Safin dominated the third set, firing two aces in his last service game before closing out the match.

Safin adds the Masters Series Madrid shield to his previous ones collected in Toronto 2000, Paris 2000 and Paris 2002.

The Russian claimed his second ATP title of 2004, following his win in Beijing, and his 13th career ATP title.

En route to victory, Safin defeated Feliciano Lopez, Stefan Koubek, Luis Horna, Andre Agassi and Nalbandian. He adds 100 INDESIT ATP 2004 Race points to his tally as well as collecting € 445,500. Safin now has a 43-20 match record in 2004.

With four Tennis Masters Cup berths still remaining, Safin’s win means he overtakes Tim Henman in 6th place of the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race and only trails 5th placed Carlos Moya by 15 points. The Russian, who holds an outstanding 16-2 career match record at the next ATP Masters Series event in Paris (two wins and one final from four appearances), will be confident of securing his place in Houston.

Safin joins Andre Agassi and Juan Carlos Ferrero in a short but honorable list of winners of the Masters Series Madrid event. Prior to this year, Safin had never one a match in Madrid but now holds a 5-2 record here.

The Russian improves his career record to 5-1 against Nalbandian and avenges his only loss to the Argentine, suffered this year at Roland Garros. Safin is 2-3 against Argentine opponents in 2004.

Nalbandian’s Madrid final defeat means he is now 0-3 lifetime in ATP Masters Series finals (Canada 2003, Rome 2004). The Argentine is a career 2-6 in ATP finals and now holds a 30-13 match for the year.

The Masters Series Madrid final was watched by many sports stars. Brazilian Roberto Carlos, of Real Madrid fame, and rally drive legend Carlos Sainz were among those in attendance.

Nalbandian:
“I think he played a great match and I did helped him to win actually. Though I didn’t play my best tennis, he didn’t give me chances. He had great opportunities. There were not many long points and that was difficult for me. But I’m enjoying my tennis. I would have liked to have won the tournament and be close to Houston because I see now it’s a bit more difficult for me. But I’ll still fight for it because I know I’m playing well again.”

On getting to Houston: “It would have been great to win and be closer, but I still have chances, of course. They’re going to play next week, too. I don’t know how the match is now, but I think I have to win the two next tournaments.”

Safin said about Nalbandian:
“It’s been easier than what I expected, maybe because he hadn’t had a really tough match at any time. He had easy matches here. Maybe he got used to that. Besides, he had a lot of pressure towards the Masters, to make it in the Top 8. Those things prevented him from playing at his level.”

And Congrats to all David fans - he still had a good tournament!
