Roger Federer d Mardy Fish 6-1,3-6,6-3

Great effort by Roger overall. It's not easy when Mardy is playing well and aggressive with no pressure at all. I thought Roger had to come up with some good shots and good focus to play at the level required since he knew he had already qualified. Mardy can feel good about his play in this match even though he lost. He really gifted that match to Nadal in the first match. If Mardy had been this relaxed he would have beaten Rafito.

Now go ahead and wrap it up Rogie!!!:worship:

Didn't see a thread.

Great attacking-tennis by both. Fish goes 1-2 (eliminated beforehand) and Fed stays unbeaten on his way to the semis.

Went walkabout in the second, otherwise a decent performance. Was a lot more focused against Nadal but that's to be expected.

Nadal would have needed about 7 sets to win that many games. well done Fish.

After a dreadful start of the match (à la Tsonga?), Fish realized that he had nothing to lose here and stepped it up in the second set. This, combined with a classic mental walkabout from Federer, resulted in Fish deservedly winning the second set.
I'd call it a "consolation set". :)

Thereafter the result was never-in-doubt, Fed stopped the rot and did his business. Certainly not his best performance (pretty much impossible after that masterclass against Rafa), but decent enough, imho.
And to be honest I'd rather see these Mirkaland sets happening during this dead rubber than in possible later stages of the tournament.

Well done Rog, all three matches won. :cheerleader:
Mardy... too big an event for him with his current form and lack of experience. Still, great effort of him to even be there. Hopefully a good start of the season in 2012 for him as well, as he's surely capable of playing some mighty good ball.

I felt Mardy played great in that 2nd set, it's not that Fed just gifted it away.

It was a combination of both.
And yes, Fish doesn't get enough respect in general. He played very well against Rafa as well.

Fish has played well in patches,a set here and a set there but wasn`t consistent in any match throughout. The first set against Nadal, the second set vs Tsonga and today`s first set were awful by Fish.

The third set was very good stuff from Roger. He broke Fish with 4 winners. And served 8 aces after that. 2 aces/per serving game = impossible for Fish to break. Game set and match Federer.

If Fish was playing like this against nadal he would have beaten him easily . Fed peaked too early, he'll probably lose in semis but really who cares, good things have been done at Tuesday night

Glad Fish got a set, hasn't disgraced himself this week, despite being not fully fit. Was playing very well for a while in this match and against Rafa.

his timing was spot on: Bageling Nadal is more important then winning the title.

Fed never tried to break back after he was broken in the second set. Mardy was playing well. So Fed does what he does, go super big on returns and not really run for balls. He gathered himself for third and broke at the first chance. Then it was over. This year, people have been punishing him for giving up in a set after going a break down, but he's got away with here against Tsonga and Fish. Hopefully whoever gets him in the semis doesn't let him get away with it again, but it seems doubtful.

No he was trying to break back but Mardy was playing well. There was no "getting away" with anything in the third set as Roger was just too good. :) Glad that Mardy put up a good fight though.

Fish didn't embarrasses himself during the tournament despite 0-3. He showed plenty of good tennis and should probably have won a match but didn't play well in tiebreaks and on important points. Gonna be very unhappy that he missed the chance of getting extra ranking points.

Fed on the other hand will be back at #3 before this is over. He's on a mission...a GOAT mission

GOAT = Fed

Fish was injured prior to WTF. Murray was injured in WTF. Big difference. Also, there's no point carrying on with a tournament if you're going to lose every match and make your injury worse. Use your head :yeah:

Federer looking in very good shape to reach the final, defend his title and end the year as world number 3

Would be really interesting if Nadal wins his match against Tsonga to make the semis, but he'll be against Ferrer who will be ready to demolish an off-form Nadal just as he did twice in 2007 and at this year's Australian Open.

I wouldn't underestimate Ferrer, he has taken sets off Federer before and he's playing really great tennis right now, Federer has to play at a high level and sustain it in order to win, it won't be easy

Hopefully Roger brings the A-game in the last two matches.

no you don't get treatment before and during the WTF unless you're injured.Give Fish credit;he's never won a MS and never made even 1 slam semifinals and in my opinion doesn't deserve to be there but at least he used 1 leg to play on;especially he would NEVER punk out in front of his own people and for that he deserves a :hatoff:

While it's not surprising for Federer to defeat Ferrer in 3, he better do it in 2. If he wants to really be prepared for that Australian Open, he needs to finish Ferrer in 2 sets otherwise I will begin to worry. This tournament usually is the type for him to send a message to 2012 season. Ferrer is a pusher regardless of how well he "plays". If you struggle against a pusher, what can we say about facing a powerful player in Djokovic come SF or F of the AO 2012?

As I remember, last year he was on fire at the WTF, won the final emphatically and everybody picked him to win the Australian Open (I made quite a bit of money myself out of that overhype  ). It doesn't always work like that. Tennis is unpredictable. Roger is in great shape at the moment. This tournament is his to lose. I wouldn't jump to conclusions and start making predictions, if I were you. :)

Fish did really really well to snatch the second set. great agressive game and at least he proves himself very worthy of being at the WTF (considering Nadal did so much worse against Federer)

granted Federer certainly dropped his game a bit from Jesus mode the other day!

Federer definitely has the odds right now on winning this tournament. this is going to sound strange, but at this point the only one I see stopping him might be Ferrer, because that little fighter is so freaking consistant
