Great win for Ferru but it was not the Fedal killer Djokovic out there. Could hardly get the ball over the net most of the time. Quite embarrassing out there.

Good luck rest of the tournament Ferru :yeah:

Ferrer played well and Nole was a disaster. Good win for David, he's qualified for sure now right?

Scenarios: 1. Berdych beats Ferrer in 2, Nole wins in 2

Ferrer 2-1, sets 4-2
Berdych 2-1, sets 5-3
Nole 2-1, sets 4-3

2: Berdych in three, Nole in two
Ferrer 5-2
Nole 4-3
Berdych 5-4

So in conclusion, Nole goes through if he wins in two and Berdych wins in three or loses. If Berdych loses, Nole is through no matter what (if both lose, H2H decides unless Tipsa's 1-1 record somehow screws it up and they start looking at sets).

Today's "what the hell" moment brought to you in association with David Ferrer and Novak Djokovic.

Nole was more off than three week old uncooked chicken but Ferrer was majestic too, hence the one-sided scoreline. A more robust Djokovic might have been able to turn that but David took what was on the other side of the net and mashed it into a pulp. It's been an ugly end to such a high season for Djokovic.

David was playing at an absolutely incredible level, extremely aggressive and going for it in the rallies and HARDLY EVER Missing.

he was insanely consistant-agressive today. oh and whoever said Ferrer has a bad serve?? it was hot today, he was hitting it fast and in the corner.

Djokovic was not playing his BEST, but actually played pretty well in the first set (despite crashing and going MIA in the second). honestly I think Ferrer would have had a good shot at a top form Djokovic today too, he played awesome. won fair and square, and the result is more based on David than Novak!

The fact that he lost to Ferrer is not a big deal. However, the fact that he didn't even try is not acceptable. Djokovic does NOT deserve to be in semis with this type of attitude. I don't know why he even bothered showing up today. The ATP should make him give money back to the crowd for his embarrassing performance. All credit to Pics but he didn't have to do anything special today, he simply played his regular game. Dementieva would kick Nole's ass today.

The writing has been on the wall for a while, when it comes to Djokovic. This isn't the same Djokovic we saw up through about Wimbledon/Canada. He picked up the shoulder/back injury and has not been the same player. Ferrer is confident, he's a workhorse, and he's a pitbull, and he simply wanted the win a lot more today. Nope. If both Berdych and Djokovic win in straights or if they both win in 3, then Berdych goes through on better set win/loss ratio. If Nole wins in 2 and Berdych in 3 then Nole goes through on tournament H2H.

I think Nole goes through but not because of H2H but because 4/3 > 5/4

If you're not 100% or you're short on match-play, you do not want to be playing David Ferrer. If I were Djoker I'd tank to Tipsy to avoid certain & total destruction at Federer's hands.

If I was Djoker I would withdraw to avoid further embarrassment and to give Tipsa his chance to beat Almagro fair and square and finally earn here some money and ATP points. But most likely he continues and takes his 6th loss in SF.

Yes it does, the fact Nole was so off is why Ferru was able to play like that. He even knew it.

Congratulations are in order for David. He served solidly and returned some unbelievable Novak shots that other players wouldn't get a racket on. Look how many steps David has to take to get to the balls. Amazingly good footwork. I like that he acknowledged his coach in his signature at the end.

Guys at the peak of their careers shouldn't be totally gassed and exhausted by the YEC even if they won 3 slams that year. I could see if they had some underlying medical condition or something but Nole has been the fittest guy on tour this year.. No excuses. Agaain, 24-25 year old should NOT be getting GASSED. A 30 year old should gas out much faster then a mid 20s player regardless of the way they play IMO.

Its ridiculous in the sense that every dang year that seems to go by, the OLDEST guy of the top of the bunch is always the freshest, and the most in shape over the other top 3 who are 6 years younger. Its nonsense

What the heck are two 30 years old like Ferrer and Fed doing with much better health and more gas in the tank?

Most unexpected result of the year?

Not entirely. Djokovic was far from convincing in his match against Berdych as well, and it was for a great deal due to Berdych's massive choking talents () that he managed to get through that match. And in contrary to popular belief, Ferrer is actually a very decent HC player, as he showed again today.

Fed should really lose 0-2 v Fish and take 2nd place so he can play Ferrer in semi final

And to lose 200 points + 120 000 dollars prize money ? Why ? He may need these points if he really is aiming to be back # 1 next year

 I didn't realise that if Djokovic and Berdych are tied at 1-2 then Djokovic qualifies no matter what becuase of H2H! Sets played only come into it if three players are tied.

That means if Ferrer beats Berdych it won't matter even if Djokovic loses 0-6 0-6 to Tipsarevic. He'll still qualify :o

correct, I got it wrong initially thinking only if Djokovic wins in straights he qualifies, actually his qualification could be decided by Ferrer and how seriously he plays his match

surely this means Djokovic vs. Tipsarevic should be played first

Fed can't finish second. He already won the group. He can however play Ferrer if Tipsy beats Nole and Berdych beats Ferrer. That way Berdych would be first and Ferrer second.

Arakasi

Tipsarevic cannot qualify in any scenario. 1-2 qualifies over 1-1. It is between Djokovic and Berdych.

My point was that if Ferrer wins Djokovic will qualify no matter what his scoreline is.

Some Idiots here can hate anyone. Sad, but true. Ferrer played very well, but Novak was near awful. He should pull out and give someone else a chance to play. He never should have played Basel, or probably Paris too. He needs to rest and get healthy as he has tons of points to defend early next year.

Joker and Nadal had a tough year...tought matches...that last one in USO was killer for body...its normal they play like shit in this fail tourny...and after failing all year long Fed is fresh and plus is his one of the fav tourny...so all this is rly is not so suprising.

I guess you missed the years when Fed played 80+ matches (more matches than Djokovic and Nadal), and still won or made SF at the year-end masters championship. In those years he won all year long and was still fresh enough to do well at the TMC/YEC/WTF

Hate having to break it to you but not everything is about Roger. Djokovic is tired, mentally and physically, I suppose he is entitled to that after the season he had.

And u need to understand that Federer is different type of player then Djokovic or Nadal they are more physical players...its not how many matches Joker had this year...its about how many of them were brutal and metaly hard. 42 match strake 6 hard finalls against Nadal, many close matches...getting to the final of every tourny till indoor season. He is more tired mentaly then physicly this year...

I believe barbadosan's original point is that Roger was still competing at a high level at this tournament when he was winning tournaments after tournaments, as opposed to what you said about him "failing" the entire year (can't even be bothered to respond to this). It's not like this is the first year he's a favourite for the title.

Anyway, if Nole and Nadal choose to play this kind of tennis, they have no one to blame but themselves if they're tired at the end of the season. But their fatigue and resulting lack of competitiveness (allegedly, that is) have no bearing on the legitimacy of this tournament. Only the two players' tards think that the WTF is a joke of a tournament because their favourites haven't been able to do well here as yet; it's always been the second-most important tournament after the Grand Slams. Duh.

Really looks to me Rafa and Nole want this season over with. Both should have just skipped this tournament all together.Neither really look like they want to be there. Both are light years behind where they were just a few months ago.

Will both be prepared for Australia? Especially with Nadal playing davis cup

How can you just "skip" the tour's year-end championship?? What kind of top player would do that? This is a tournament you spend all year qualifying for. What they need to do is prepare better for it, not contemplate skipping it like it were some charity exhibition match.

Yolita

I guess you missed the years when Fed played 80+ matches (more matches than Djokovic and Nadal), and still won or made SF at the year-end masters championship. In those years he won all year long and was still fresh enough to do well at the TMC/YEC/WTF

It's not only the amount of matches you play, it's also against whom you play those matches. Beating Federer and Nadal 10 times in one season is no mean feat. Beating Rafa in 6 finals, on three surfaces, 2 Grand Slam finals is bound to take a lot of mental energy. The same about all the tough matches against Federer, 3 semis and one final.

So yes, I can see why he's tired. What he achieved this year is now being taken for granted only because he did it. But if anybody had predicted in January that Novak would do what he has done, he/she would have been ridiculed, the Fedal domination was so strong then.

I'm not trying to undermine what Federer did on those years, but there is a difference between beating Top 10 players to beating Top 30 players. The average ranking of Nole's opponents in the semis and finals for his ten titles is 9.75, the average ranking of Federer's opponents in the semis and finals for his titles in 2006 is over 26. I'm sure Roger would have beaten anybody, but he did beat players ranked 20-30, not Top 10, like Nole. Of course it was less tiring. Mentally. Nole looks drained mentally, more than physically.

I'm sure he'll learn from the experience and next year he'll plan better.
