Pure class from Roger, totally overwhelming in all departments. The court speed and bounce totally worked in his favor and turned this match-up on it's head. All of Nadal's shots landed in his strikezone. The second set was unreal tennis for the majority. Really special, shows you that Roger still has it.

Rafa has no spark in his game at all, and didn't do anything particularly well or overwhelmingly bad. He was basically a spectator watching Roger hit winners. There isn't any life in Nadal's game right now, and given he's been off for weeks, that isn't a good sign going forward vs. Tsonga.

That was explosive, clinical, immaculate and flamboyant, while also being controlled and absolutely sure. This Fed was focused and played an EXTREMELY high level of tennis, finding potency on both sides, which is something he failed to do in the 2006 and 2007 meetings with Rafa at the WTFinals.

Taking my imaginary hat off to Federer here, big stuff. Played so risky, was concentrated and just left Nadal no chance. He even made the court look fast :worship:
Nadal on the other hand could face an uphill struggle if the right Tsonga shows up. Again, big IF, but still, I wouldn't even say Rafa's the favorite for that match anymore. He looks tired, passive and even a bit disprited on court imho. Of course there's still a reasonable chance of us seeing him in the final, but he has to improve a hell of a lot.

it`s everyday more obvius than nadal was very lucky with the homogenization of the surfaces like grass or hard courts.......is the courts were like in the 90s nadal never shuld win in grass or hard.

and my theory that nadal was take advantage of past peak federer and pre peak nole for won titles out of clay.

if only in federer`s peak more matches were in grass and hard and not only in clay, the h2h should be different

DrJules

According to Start da Game Nadal would adapt to the fast conditions of the 90s better than Federer.

When the ball travels faster and the ball bounces lower the whole match up changes.

This match was played at a higher level probably than any match he played at the 2010 champs. This is just a RR match though and there is a long way to go, but the signs are very encouraging. I think Djokovic will be incredibly difficult to topple though (assuming these two will make the finals, really). It goes without saying though, of course.

Federer was very good. Congrats to him on an important victory for his confidence and his legacy. It appeared to me that Nadal might not have been 100%, or at least was not playing with full confidence.

I thought Federer waited for just the right moments to pull the trigger. He was very aggressive, but not reckless. His match statistics are unbelievable. He dominated the entire match and most of the rallies, which is somewhat unusual for this matchup. Nadal on the other hand didn't really do anything well. He probably should have tried to be more aggressive with his forehand, his backhand was a weakness, and he wasn't able to muster any fight.

Full credit to Federer. I was impressed.

That was an absolute SUBLIME performance from Federer, as if it was still 2005. :worship:
Everything, his serve, the returns, BH, FH, he did *worked*. Barely any shanks - if any - and most important, no loss of concentration whatsoever. A man possessed out there today.

Rafa was obviously subpar, there wasn't anything he could do. Merely a spectator to the match, like Filo already said, and for that matter this was a disappointment to me as I hoped for a genuine battle. It wasn't meant to be. I hope it didn't have anything to do with his food poisoning two days ago but somehow I don't think so - he just got entirely outclassed today, with Roger playing at THIS level he's simply the better player of the two on this particular surface. Hopefully Rafa will be able to make it past Tsonga but it looks like his chances may be grim... :scared:

Seems like that slow, high bouncing WTF-surface isn't bothering Fed all too much at all. ;)

Nadal is the biggest disgrace to tennis. Glad to see the pusher get humiliated.

That's not fair. Federer would say Nadal is his toughest opponent and biggest rival, as well as an all-time legend of the game. His game is unique and effective, and he has a huge fan base. Sure he had an off day today, but that doesn't make him a disgrace.

Hard to know what to make of this - Fed was excellent, serve amazing, unreal low error rate, but had an opponent at 50%, no power, no serve, very passive.

As in Madrid 09, and here last year, Nadal unfit no longer has the matchup advantage on Fed, more the opposite is true: he becomes a sitting duck, just sheer target practice. Even easier for Fed than playing Ferrer.

thank god I didn't pay to see this in person. all this match did was confirm that this year's finals have been disappointing so far. Besides Fed, and maybe Ferrer, no one else has really played their absolute best so far. this event is supposed to be exciting.........i haven't seen that excitement yet. As for Rafa, he got his ass handed to him. 2012 ain't gonna be all that better than 2011 if he doesn't get his act together. Better man won today. Congrats Fed.

This match was played at a higher level probably than any match he played at the 2010 champs. This is just a RR match though and there is a long way to go, but the signs are very encouraging. I think Djokovic will be incredibly difficult to topple though (assuming these two will make the finals, really). It goes without saying though, of course. But wait, Dokovic is supposed to be injured.

I really don't know what to make of Nadal anymore. Why you would want to go to "pre 07 style" is beyond me especially after you saw much success playing much more aggressive last year with more pentrating shots and MUCH bigger serving especially when alot of your speed has left you.

I said it a few months ago.. Ditch the damn uncle. He seems to be OK with nadal moonballing, WTA serving, playing non aggressive). Why change what brought you 3 slams last year? If you got a great mouse trap that kills why build another one.

I know Rafa is no Roger, Pete or Becker indoors but judging what he did last year, this was fucking inexcusable

What a performance from Roger, one of the best matches I've seen him play since 2006.

Rafa was subpar but Roger also made him look bad, you cannot say a player lost for his own form if the guy in front of you is hitting winner after winner after winner from all positions in the court.

I hope Rafa can bounce back and beat Tsonga but it is going to be difficult if he doesn't bring his A-game :(

Possibly helps Roger, and I'm perfectly serious here, as Nadal's potency on the court is reduced SO significantly, while Federer still finds very effective ways to hit through the surface.7

Slow and fairly low is good for Roger against Rafael.

The fastest surface they have ever met on is probably Shanghai 06. Federer won in straight sets.

I am pretty sure Fed would prefer a very fast and very low bouncing indoor court facing Nadal. I would guess the surface he contributed to killing would be the easiest for him.

The Federer of 2011 appeared today, this is a different Fed to 04 - 07 but this performance is certainly on a par. Against Blake in 2006 and Ferrer 2007 he was arguably superior to today (but then again maybe not). Although his backhand was a masterpiece against Blake in 2006, against Nadal in 2006 and 2007 Fed was not as potent as he was today and struggled mightily to produce any backhand winners. Indeed, I think he only produced one against Nadal back in the 2006 match, albeit a very memorable one.

Seems like that slow, high bouncing WTF-surface isn't bothering Fed all too much at all. ;)

True, & the higher bounce this year makes this performance all the more impressive. On serve & forehand, and after a few games on return & backhand, Roger just seemed to be able to put the ball wherever he wanted to. He was finding Nadal's backhand more than Nadal was finding his. He didn't even need a net game. All his approach shots were winners. Wow.

Nadal didn't sound hopeful in the pre-match interview and clearly didn't feel fully prepared, but he'd have put up more of a fight if this had been clay. When Fed's able to play aggressively without making errors, & keep his 1st serve in - as he can indoors -, there's not much Nadal can do.

What torment are you talking about? :D Rafa was already professional when Roger won his first slam. Roger managed to win 16 slams in the same era. That's not really tormenting. He had a couple of tough loss, like in any great rivalries, didn't stop him from become arguably (i think most certainly) the GOAT of this sport. Roger doesn't need any consolation. He's the all-time leading Grand Slam winner, and chances are, he will be for a long time, and who knows, he's maybe not done yet winning them.

Fed has been beaten dozens of times when he was subpar. There's no shame in celebrating when he turns the tables, especially against his all-time nemesis.

Actually Federer fans have had lots to cheer about lately. He won two tournaments in a row, including a masters he had never before even made the finals. He challenged Djokovic better than anyone else this year and has shown repeatedly that he will not back down from challenging his younger rivals. I think federer has mentally gained something from watching djokovic destroy nadal countlessly and maybe that has helped him play his game. Its like a bully who would beat the crap out of you but you've been beating up some other kid for a while who now owns the bully who's been whipping you. Psychologically your like hey now I can beat this guy.

I remember fed playing awesome in the first 5 or 6 games of the FO final till nadal took an injury timeout. I had noticed then that federer had adjusted better to the high topspin mostly by taking the ball earlier on his BH side. Anyways, I noticed fed taking the ball earlier on the backhand side like during the FO but actually targeting nadals backhand. Fed has stopped slicing to nadal's forehand and instead to his backhand and really pounded nadal's backhand on serve to the deuce side repeatdly.

Lets see if this carries over into AO 2012 where i hope nadal and fed are in the same half.

Rafa continues to hold that position in the eyes of experts and fans alike. 7-2 in majors speaks for itself. These 9 matches are the ones people will remember in years to come.

Short summary:

Nadal was injured
This defeat means nothing
Tennis experts[Everko, SDG, GSM Nadal] say Nadal is goat

No?

No, not really, this is not boxing. People will remember how many slams they won, first and foremost. You go against the field, not one player. Also, which experts are you referring to? Because i not only never read about any expert thinking Rafa is the GOAT because of the 7-2, i actually never read any expert saying Nadal is the GOAT. Where are those articles?

Tangy is in full "let's pretend Federer served at 40% and made 60 UEs and still beat Rafa" mode :D
No, I am not. Even you know, watching Fedal all these years, that that wasn't the best Roger's played and if you think Nadal's lackluster play had nothing to do with it well now you're just being unreasonable.

Ultimately, this match was pretty meaningless.

In your daft middle aged woman-head yeah.
I'm sorry if the truth hurts your feelings. How many more torturous years will it be before Murray breaks through?

Even that wasn't exactly pacy - Davydenko and Blake thought it was pretty slow iirc (ok they'd just come from Paris carpet, but still).

Dubai 06 might have been a contender, if it was a day match (not really a quick surface, but the ball rockets cos of the heat). Was at night though.

Not really a lot to choose from tbh. Outdoor they've only played at Miami x3, Dubai and Aus.

Yeah, the few times Nadal has gone deep in faster events, Fed has been knocked out earlier.

Probably one of those two. Or Roland Garros this year maybe:)

Nadal posted this on his FB page before the match against Roger

"Overcame the stomach problems ... practicing hard for the match against Federer that I'll play in a moment!

so citing injury excuse would be ridiculous at this so late point of time :D

Seriously though, if you don't enjoy watching Federer play like that you have no business watching tennis. Fanboy or whatever.

You are incorrect.

It is the number of GS's each player has won that counts.

Blatant bullshit does. Face it, clean win. Thank God Rodduck didn't dominate tennis or we'd be seeing this crap in every loss thread.

Well, the Fed fans haven't had much to celebrate lately, so when Roger plays out of his mind to beat an obviously subpar player, just let them enjoy it while they can.

So why exactly are you here to spoil the fun?

Like he already did four times this year:rolleyes:

Nadal is too humble to blame illness, fatigue or injury for defeat. It's not his style. Even when he has been clearly injured - e.g. against Soderling in RG 09, vs Ferrer AO 11, he has refused to speak about this, out of respect for his opponent. But clearly he was not 100% today. If you couldn't see that, you haven't watched a lot of tennis.

If Nadal did not take so much time between points this would have been done in about 50 minutes maximum.

Federer won easily because he played down the line backhand to Nadal bh. Nadal's bh is non-existent nowadays. He played similar to how djokovic played nadal. Down the line to neutralise any rally then crosscourt torturing Nadal. He used to be stubborn to stick to crosscourt backhand to nadal fh.

nadal will come back to haunt fed next year, and anyway, in the big picture, this win is a very small consolation to the torment rafa administered on roger in the past.

actually in the big picture Federer is and has caused more torment to Nadal than any other player (bar Djokovic this season), he kept him at #2 for one of the longest streaks ever and had Federer not existed Nadal would probably have been the GOAT or at least just next to Laver and Sampras

unlike someone who are bitching about how fed only beats nadal when he's tired, sick, subpar etc. I mean I know nadal was not as it best, but still.

Nadal was obviously not even near to his best level (it's been a rather long time since he actually was, btw :o), but the whole concept of this excusitis fails so terribly because it completely denies that no player barely ever is "100%" - all these guys are top athletes who push their bodies to their utmost limits continuously, so probably all of them feel physical troubles now and then, if not most of the time.

Federer much more inconsistent match to match these days.

Which is exactly the proof for him being in decline, despite some incidental ridiculously good performances from him still happening - like this one was.

When you get a court that doesn't allow Nadal to get that ball biting up high on Fed's backhand then betting against Federer is dangerous. If this Fed turns up... well, you see what can happen.

Nadal - Tsonga should be a huge match.

I don't think Nadal's lackluster play had anything to do with Federer finding the range on his forehand.

Olderer still has some gas left in his tank
this was somewhat Identical to the 2006 Shanghai beatdown but with an improvised Bagel :p

hmmm lets see who takes the last 3 Semis spot now

I think this is more similar to their 2007 Shanghai match, except it's even better and more emphatic

spot on :yeah:

after so many broken legs, shoulders , arms and wrist, common illness or a fatigue looks pretty tiny

fed played good, great whatever, but nadal was awful. who thinks nadal wasnt awful - is wrong.

had he not been awful (but good, great whatever) it would've been a completely different result.

in that sense, its quite wrong to claim how this fed bagels (any) nadal.
